Online DnD 5e

Hey, I've recently started playing DnD5e in a local group, face-to-face, and it has been really fun. My previous experience was in 3.5, but 5e is relatively simliar. Anyway, I really like playing, but I've been thinking about attempting to DM too, so I was thinking running it online may be a nice option, as I do play online, and seeing as I'm a student (although I'm still pretty busy) I do have a reasonable amount of time and flexibility to manage a game.

I'm thinking of running the Elemental Evil campaign, but starting as 1st level. So this would allow for character development and a team camraderie to develop... Also potential over time for more than one team? Eventually opening up into the broader campaign. Basically the way the campaign is set up, to begin with for the 1st 2 levels, its a bit more sandboxy - you can explore town, discover rumors and decide which direction you might want to explore...

Anyway, thought I'd write a post to see what kind of interest would be had. I'm mostly thinking to stick to the standard player's handbook as far as characters, but I would be open to some negotiation within reason...

I'm looking for a 5ed game, and haven't played any variant of Elemental Evil yet, so defiantly interested.

In reply to TheProphet (msg # 1):

5e is pretty popular, so I don't think you'll have much trouble scrounging up a party.

Seeing as you're planning to run the Elemental Evil campaign, I'd recommend looking at the Elemental Evil Player's Companion (AKA EEPC), available for free here:

I like DnD 5E a lot, though I admit I've little experience with Elemental Evil. Would the primer help with that?

I haven't played Elemental Evil yet. I have a PDF with the 5e character options introduced in it (spells, races, etc) but haven't actually plaued it. I would be interested.

You will have no shortage of players. If you have not run a play by post game before there are some unique hurdles and strengths.

You will have a sizable player drop off 10%-30%. Over the first few weeks. And of you have any issues you have have 1-2 more a month or so in. But you also may not see any of that. If you have questions or want admin help getting it off the ground let me know via email, as I might miss post here.

Great... Thanks for the interest, and those who posted advice. I'll take a look at those things you all mentioned. As far as players dropping out and all that, I was kind of imagining if we start at 1st level and don't start the core adventure/s until we reach 3rd, then the preliminary simpler adventures will probably help to sort out who is planning on sticking around, while also not being as big a deal if the occasional character drops out of the mix...

Well, I set up the bare bones of the game here: link to another game

Still have to iron out what character sheet we should use... I've personally used DnDBeyond as it basically helps iron-out the basic mechanics of things as far as character creation and the available options: https://www.dndbeyond.com/
