IC: Star Wars West Marches game
Hi folks;

I've recently gotten into the West Marches (http://arsludi.lamemage.com/in...iments-west-marches/) style of gaming, and of course I always love Star Wars. Would people play a West Marches-style game in the Star Wars universe, perhaps on a newly colonized planet in the Outer Rim? The idea's nebulous right now and I wouldn't have time to run it for several weeks, but I figured I'd ask and let the ideas percolate for a while.

System would most likely be FFG's SWRPG, since that's my favorite of them.

Yeah, I think this would be pretty cool. I'd be down for Star Wars.

You could do a small, poorly charted sector, including some new colonies.  Plenty of narrative, physical, and political space for things to get interesting, plus the added bonus of spaceships zipping in and out of hyperspace!  Plus, you could have interesting and varied terrain and environments without violating Star Wars' One Biome Per Planet rule.

This sounds like fun, but I'm sadly not familiar with the system.  Will have to read up on it. :-D

@GreyGriffin, Naboo has multiple biomes on it. Plains, swamps, mountains, oceans . . . :) Of course, if you're one of those people that insists that the prequel trilogy Doesn't Exist, you could be forgiven for thinking that only single-biome planets existed in Star Wars. Just as someone who crash-lands in Kansas and never sees anything else could be forgiven for thinking that Earth was mostly planted with corn. :)

@DaCuseFrog, it's a pretty simple system, and easy to learn. I'd be happy to guide new folks through character creation, and I'm always pretty explicit in stating things like DCs and target numbers ahead of time. (None of which exist in the FFG system, of course!-- but I'll always tell you what dice you need to add to your roll.)

Forgive my ignorance but what’s the difference between a West Marches style game and a sandbox game?

My take on it is that it's a particular style of sandbox. Obviously the whole aspect of scheduling doesn't come into it when you're playing with an online group, but the idea of players forming a small group and then saying, "We're going to go out and explore the third moon" or "We'd like to chase down the bandits that have been plaguing the outlying farms" still applies. Generally, West Marches-style games are more focused on purposeful exploration rather than just roaming around aimlessly looking for trouble. :) But like a sandbox, there's no overarching plot, just a shared persistent world.

For this game, I plan on giving players a base, either a colony ship or a town, that is considered "safe." Characters can stay in town, but nothing interesting will happen there-- it's just a place to meet other PCs, buy/sell gear, and hang out. I'll probably provide adventure seeds in the form of tasks that the PCs can complete-- explore the third moon, take care of the bandits, etc-- but they're optional. If one of the PCs is Force-sensitive and has a feeling telling her to explore the nearby swamp, that's ok. If a big-game hunter PC wants to go out and look for rancors, that's okay too. There's a lot of player input to the world-- if someone says there's mountains with an ancient Jedi Temple, then they exist. If someone says there's rancors in the swamp, then people better be careful when they're out there. After the task is completed,  PCs return to base. They can go out again with the same group, find a new group, decide to open a business, just hang out in the cantina for a while, whatever.

Does that answer your question? It's pretty late for me, so I may not be terribly eloquent. :)

Count me in. I have the Edge of the Empire book, but haven't really had a chance to put it through its paces. And I'm in another West Marches-style game here, and it's been working out pretty well.

I too am interested.

Assuming you plan to have more than one 5 player squad active you probably want to start the game above the default exp level, or you will end up with a lot of similar charictors.

I have found that edge of empire works better if you multiply the obligation bonuses by 10 or 15.

I would be quite interested in this game.  Would you allow Force users in this game?

Yes, Force users would be allowed. I was thinking of setting it about 9-10 years in to the Empire, so the Jedi aren't around anymore although a character could certainly be a survivor of Order 66. Force users would be generally underground, though.

West Marches style games are ones I've seen the most success with on this site, very interested. Haven't gotten a good chance to play Starwars.
