IC:  5e Mid-Level West Marches Thieves' Guild

Let me preface by saying that this idea is still in its infancy, and it may take a while to get going.  I was curious if there would be any interest in a low/mid-level (5-10) West Marches style campaign for D&D 5e.  The setting would be based around a thieves' guild in a large (currently unnamed, but potentially set in the D&D universe) city, and all of the players would be at least part Rogue.  Any official published source would be acceptable for character building (and maybe UA Revised Ranger).  I'd like to offer a range of quests that would allow/require use of most (if not all) skills and tools, as well as any (reasonably) sized group.  Time will continue to move whether you post or not, and there will be time sensitive quests.  Any thoughts?

This sounds like an excellent idea.  If you are still looking for a city to base it in might I suggest Sharn or Sigil as two good examples of large cities in fantasy, or at least possible sources of inspiration.

Another city that would have an abundance of information is Waterdeep, in the Forgotten Realms. The first thing published on the city -- a boxed set from 1988 -- was extremely thorough, including a very large map, details on numerous businesses, guilds, and noble families, and even bits of color like random street scenes or a table for determining what was in the pocket you just picked.

You could have an entire campaign in that one city, and never have to leave it.

I'd be interested in a game like that

The flaw with Waterdeep is that it is in the the Forgotten Realms which causes all sorts of problems and or confusion with any degree of world customization for the game, to many people know to much about it and think that matters.

That's why you state your world is not Canon.

It can work in Forgotten Realms in Waterdeep, There is also Thesk which is run by rogues and cleric of the god of rogues.

There is Sharn in Eberron as well which makes a great place for it too.

I am new to 5th edition, but I'd try if allowed.

Maybe hit the classics? I'm pretty sure Sanctuary from the "Thieves' World" setting has been RPGified a few times, that's got plenty for a crew to do.

Man, I would be so down for this.

Sharn would be a great city as a home base with loads of great possibilities from the old 3.5 books. With the new Eberron book on DM's Guild it's totally a viable option now for 5e!

I also agree that Waterdeep would be just fine, especially with the soon to be release Dragon Heist book which is supposed to be half fluff on 5e Waterdeep. There is no reason you couldn't use that book and/or map and just call it Harbordeep or Deepharbor from XYZ World instead of Waterdeep from Faerun. Or use Waterdeep and just say "we're not in canon and I've changed ABC and reserve the right to change DEFGHIJKLMNOPQRSTUVWXYZ still"

I've never read any Thieves World stuff but that isn't requisite for gaming there I suppose.

I would certainly be interested in participating.  I love playing thieves but they are difficult in a mixed party so the thought of a party of thieves is quite enticing.  I am just starting work on a similar campaign for FtF.  I don't have much experience with 5e but I have the books and it would not be too difficult to figure things out.
