Modern AGE System idea "Project Edenia"

Long ago, there was a spaceship called The Edenia that is fleeing combat with some aliens or other, and they warp to a planet called Nod. While cloaked, they send an away party equipped with nanobot communicator implants to investigate the planet because it appears habitable. They're only sent to investigate, but someone decides to physically try to eat some of the food, and the Edenia quarantines them. Partly because of food consumption, partly because there was an emergency situation. They lose touch, and have to make do on the planet without the help of their communicators accessing the ship's crew.

On very rare occasions over the next 6,000 years people were born with the ability to reconstruct the nanobots genetically, most prominently, those who can "talk to god". But those weren't the only nanobots in the away party. Some had telekinetic ability and a few other minor psychic phenomenon generated by the nanobots that were very easy to disguise or conceal entirely. We do have reason to believe that certain biblical figures survived longer than normal lifespans, along with the story of Lazarus. We have yet to recreate nanobots or see them spontaneously originate in others that would allow complete resurrection though. And we are capable of tracking them even without having built them. Joint efforts from the highest of the highest intelligence agencies worldwide eventually created what you would think of as the illuminati, though we are not Lizard people as you may have heard. We are fighting them though.

We're not perfect though, we never built the ISS orbiting around the Earth. We found it. The Edenia had been destroyed in a battle with another ship, probably the one chasing them, and they lost. But they kept good records. Encrypted records that it was a stroke of luck to ever discover. The alien spacecraft that crashed in Roswell turned out to have encryption software on board compatible with The Edenia. The Roswell ship itself was sent in response to the Edenia's emergency beacons. We don't know where they're at, and it's not simply a really hard math equation.

We have a moonbase and a Mars headquarters. In addition to finding the Edenia's creators, it is our goal to protect the people of earth from a massive space war. We are somewhat newcomers, but we have been able to duplicate the Edenia's technology. The people of earth can't know.



So I've got an idea for a game that is about an Earth history that didn't happen the way we thought it did and I'm looking for players willing to explore it in two phases, creating 2 Modern AGE characters. One involving characters with biblical names who have landed on a strange planet and become quarantined there with fledgling nano-based super/psychic abilities (who will be 4th level, and have their first powers purchased as Specializations) and the second, primary phase being fledgeling illuminati agents (First level) just finding out about those their ancestors, and protecting the people of Earth from the rest of the known universe. I don't know how quickly, or if it's gonna actually go to space, but there will be some space tech.

I'm tentatively interested.  I haven't gotten a chance to play a Modern AGE game yet, but it looks pretty interesting.

Well, as of right now, it'll have to be what can be done with the Basic Rulebook alone, because I don't have Game Master's Kit yet. I do have a lot of the old AGE system stuff though, so I may be able to kludge things together.

It feels like the concept has a lot of potential for non-linear storytelling.  I'm not sure what you have envisioned for the alien group, but you could make the story primarily about the modern characters with "flashback" style scenes with the ancestors.  Or you could tell the story in tandem, but would require some careful pacing control to keep the two tales hitting all the important beats at the right time.

Well, my original plan was to have a separate prelude and main story, with the ancestors being pretty much exclusive to the Prelude, but I do like the idea of flashback styles. I don't think I'm good enough to run the storylines in tandem though. Especially since if one storyline needs something to happen in the other storyline to make sense that could really slow things down. So probably Prelude+Story with the potential for occasional flashbacks.

You could do a really short prelude to establish the ancestor characters then launch into the second part.  Then, require players to write out a short flashback to their ancestor character whenever their modern character does a stunt.  The two things should roughly correlate, like the ancestor character displaying a great deal of finesse at something while the modern character uses the stunt to dodge.

That's how a modern heist-type game would handle it, anyway.

If I write it that way, I wouldn't need to do two separate sheets, since I can have them do the flashbacks whenever they would gain a Specialization level. And I can always just increase any necessary roll by the amount of levels they need before they can purchase it. And I could make it a Core Power Stunt to override this penalty.
