IC: Fantasy Hero - Hero System 6th

So...

It's been years since I ran a Fantasy Hero game. I think I might dip my toes in the arena again.

This post is here to check to see if there are enough people who 1) know the system, and 2) are interested in a moderate power level, homebrew game.

Posting rates would be moderate, 2 to 3 times a week, depending on what's going on. It will probably be faster when there is light RP, and slower (between players) when we are paying attention to phases and combat.

As a player I tend to enjoy a very tactical level of engagement, and it shows in my games. Expect about 60% combat, 40% roleplay.

In addition, PC are the good guys. Please no assassin, secret death-loving necromancers, extreme anti-heroes, and other such things.

So, if you know the system and feel up for a game, reply to this post and let me know.

I'm game for a 5th or 6th edition game. What sort of setting are you think of (high, low, epic, swords and sorcery)?

It would be a 6th edition game.

The setting I have in mind has a 'tolkienesque' fantasy background (elves, dwarves, etc but no hobbits) with moderate magic and some atypical ideas on the common tropes.

Culturally it would be a mix of high fantasy enlightened spaces mixed with sword and sorcery savagery, depending on where in the world you are.

I'd have to start small, since creating a whole setting is quite an undertaking. But I have given it some thought.

Please note that I am going to be doing an application process. I would only be taking a smaller number of players for the game.

I am pulling together all the foundation notes I put together over some time. They will build the core setting.

There's lot of stuff to be completed. Here's what I have so far:

- Core setting outline
- Core races
- Core political and social entities
- Core geography (making a map will take some time)
- Core magic (arcane and divine) concepts, along with diverging ideas
- Basic History

It would be possible to build some generic characters with this, but I want to build a few more social structures (significant factions, ideological groups, and organizations) to give a few of you some more specific options. At the moment, I will work on putting ideas on paper without fleshing out the details, so there will be plenty of room for players to flesh them out.

Here's a slight sample of the beginning:

Orthass Uruth: Meaning and Origin

Orthass Uruth is an ancient name. Its origin has been lost in time but scholars currently attribute it to a civilization that predates almost all other cultures of this world.

The name “Orthass Uruth” has been translated many times by many sages and academics. It can mean many things: Wellspring of Life, Earthen Cradle, Eternal Seed, Mother of All. No matter who translates it or when, in the end the words always lead to the same concept - a creative feminine force bringing forth its children into life and the world.

The symbol of The Goddess can be found in ancient ruins and forgotten warrens throughout the world. It consists of a crowned long-haired woman holding a flourishing tree in her hand, a rich canopy which reaches just under her chin and vast roots flowing to her waist. She is often depicted with her eyes closed. She holds the tree with her right hand. In her left hand is a knife, representing the pruning needed in order for the tree to live a long and healthy life.

Ancient usage of her name, and the traditions of the Dimoy, have led to the naming of our lands in her honor. Hence, all civilized people here know they are on Orthass, the “Cradle of Life”.

Haven't played Fantasy Hero since 2nd and 3rd Edition Hero. Hasn't changed THAT much since then, has it?

No, not really. A few of the significant system powers have been altered slightly, some have been re-organized, and some have been removed, but the core mechanic of Active Points, Combat Values, Stun, Endurance, Body and Defenses, all on a 3D6 roll is still the same.

Oh, yeah, and NO figured characteristics.

I would love to get in on a good Fantasy Hero game. Have played it numerous times in RL but have never tried it on RPOL.

I have created the game board and am beginning to populate the basic ideas. It currently contains notes and observations on ideas and concepts. I will flesh it out as the game progresses and we focus more on broader horizons.

This will probably take me into the weekend.

I will open the board to RTJs probably early next week.

I'm in a couple of 6e games right now, so I have an idea of what to expect. I have a few old concepts I'd love to shake the dust off of. How many points/Complications were you planning on?

Ok, I think I have most of what I need for the moment. The map will take much longer to finish, but I can work on a local scale first in your immediate environments.

Some of the ideas I've set up are original, some are borrowed. It's a mix of stuff.

I am still working on defining some old magic system ideas I had several years ago. They are a bit rough but I think they will work.

I'll open the board to RTJ this weekend.

Ok, I think I am done for the moment. I pulled out all the details from all the little notes and ideas I had over the last few years. Some influences are obvious, and some are very old.

The game is up and running, and the board is open.

Good luck everyone. =)
