Amnseia (game utilizing Pathfinder rules)

Is there any interest in a game where you, the player, knows nothing about your character?

The idea is that you "discover" what race, class, etc. you are through game play and role-playing.

Example:
  1. You are being attacked by wolves. You want to make a melee attack adding +3 from Str (16) and +0 from BAB. This then prompts you to write those stats on your character sheet. And now reveals your ability bonus to all Str skills.
  2. Later you are running from said wolves. Now you get to add +1 Dex (13) and +1 for skill bonus to your Acrobatics roll - now you know you're not trained in Acrobatics or very dexterous.
  3. You're trying to persuade someone to back down in a confrontation, you get to add your Cha (15) +2 to Persuasion including your training bonus and +1 skill bonus.

While this takes character creation completely out of the player's control, it would add an element of mystery to an otherwise typical game.

Eventually you should discover what class you are and thus can utilize it to it's full potential, i.e. cast spells, rage, etc.

This wouldn't be a long game, just a single adventure to try out the premise.

Would characters be able to guess at least some of their physical stats from appearance, though?  A hulking, muscular brute of a person is likely going to figure out they are that they have all these muscles for a reason, and someone who is lithe and flexible might assume they have some reason to be.  It's not going to give you everything, but at least a ballpark estimate based on how someone looks.

As to whether or not it'd be interesting - possibly, depending on how compelling it is for these characters to go throw themselves into danger while not even knowing their full faculties!

In reply to Isida KepTukari (msg # 2):

Certainly the player could throw out some guesses ... I'd likely stick to core classes (fighter, rogue, cleric, etc.) and core races (human, half-orc, half-elf) to simplify things ... but, yes, through role-playing and descriptions a player should be able to ascertain their class/race rather within several posts.

However, I wouldn't want someone to immediately post, "I wake up and look in a mirror."

This should be a discovery sort of thing. Like:
GM: "You come to a door. Turning the handle you find it locked."

Player: "Can i attempt to break down the door?" or "Can I unlock it somehow?"

GM: "You rattle the door and figure it could easily be broken by applying ample force. Make a Strength check." (Fighter, Paladin, Barbarian)
OR
"You spot a hairpin, something tells you that with a little concentration and effort you could pick the lock. Roll Dex..." (obviously Rogue, or Bard)
Or even
"An attempt to force open the door proves frivolous, as does figuring out a way to unlock the door. Frustrated you wave your hand at the door, you mutter to yourself, and the door opens." (magic user)

I would only be looking for two players at first, to keep it simple, maybe four, if there's ample interest.

This sounds interesting. It could either be intensly fun or instensly frustrating depending on how its done.

Would this be run as a group game or solo? If as a group game would players have a say on how their memories affect relationships to other characters?

Amnesia (game utilizing Pathfinder rules)

In reply to Starchaser (msg # 4):

It would be a group game, though I'm not opposed to solo either. Perhaps each character would start with their own thread, to then be united in a common thread.

Memories could be used as devices for character development, sure. Keep in mind that amnesia would provide only flashes of your past, not necessarily feelings or allegiances. However, interpretation of said flashbacks could sway your decisions.

So players would have to come into this with a open mind. One's realization that they're playing a paladin, may differ if they thought they were playing a barbarian. Or vise versa.

Count me tentatively interested. Tentatively because you mentioned paladins and barbarians so I'm guessing this is d&d based. I'm not opposed to that but haven't played since high school so will need hand holding.

Also I'm in a LOT of games so will need to either make room or schedule time.

Amnesia (game utilizing Pathfinder rules)

There's also the Pathfinder "Strange Aeons" Adventure Path. The 1st module, "In Search of Sanity," has the PCs waking up in an asylum with no memories. The GM could secretly assign pre-generated characters to the PCs and go from there, so apart from any obvious species and gender visual clues no one would know what was going on.

In reply to 12th Doctor (msg # 8):

That's cool, haven't followed Pathfinder as closely as I used to, but want to play get into again. So I'm going off what i know to run this one-off adventure. It won't be long, but wanted to try and run something that used amnesia as a plot device. It's great that there's something like that already out there, but I don't want to run someone else's adventure. I have my own idea that i want to hash out.
