IC - Tales of the Gold Monkey - 1930s Tropical Pulp Action

Remember the eighties TV show with Roddy McDowall?
Fancy gaming it?

If you’re too young to remember, it was a 1930s pulp action series set amongst the Pacific islands. Seaplanes and spies, revolvers and revolutionaries, against a background of Nazi treasure hunters, Imperial Japanese expansionists, mustache-twirling villains and sultry femmes fatales. A cross between Casablanca and Indiana Jones.

I’m thinking of using a ‘similar’ setting and making our own characters. It gives us more flexibility. I like a semi-freeform system with a lot of roleplay, simple one or two roll combat, and minimal task rolls.

Something like this:

The year is 1937. The Pacific islands are a melting pot of foreign interests, with colonies and ex-pats from almost every western nation eking out a living in the tropical paradise.

But there are a lot of dark currents flowing beneath the surface. Politics, business, military ambition. Everyone wants a slice of the Pacific, from the increasingly expansionist Japanese Empire to the colonial ambitions of the Third Reich. America, too, is keeping a wary eye on its back door.

This is a world of opportunity for a person with ears, eyes - and a revolver.

/me goes poking around for the dusty fedora and rawhide bullwhip!

As for systems... isn't there a pulp-flavored microlite? I'll go dig through my repository.

This sounds like a perfect candidate for using FATE Accelerated.

I'm always up for knocking some Nazis around!

Sounds intriguing. What sort of system would you be using, if any?

I have a flexible D6 indie system that I use for many games. It's called 1PG by Deep 7 Games.

The core rules are written on 1 PaGe, so it's a simple system but works well the way I use it. Hope that doesn't put anyone off.

The system should fade into the background for the most part. It'll have a very 'rules lite' feel.

What is your preference, guys, a gritty Casablanca style or a whimsical Raiders style?

I'd like to see a mixture of gritty and Indy, but maybe more toward the Brass Monkey style of episodic, high-action adventure.

I've never played the 1PG system yet, though I like the idea of rules fading into the background. One of my favorites for PbP games is the WyRM system and there is a Pulp flavor of it for free called Resolute, Adventurer & Genius. It's very flexible, simple and fun...

Might be very interested in this myself. I think a more adventure-y style works better on RPOL, but I'm a fan of both styles!

The system does not matter .... but the game HAS to move along. Pace is the key to this genre I think.

In reply to Grimmond (msg # 11):

If a rapid pace could be ensured, I'd be interested. I don't mean posting rate, but story action (but if the story is action-packed, I think a higher posting rate will follow).

Oh ye gods I loved that show back in the day, right after 'Greatest American Hero' on Wednesday Nights.

I am interested, might I offer Risus as an easy D6?

Raiders or Casablanca? I would say Raiders, but why choose?

Where can I find the 1PG rules?

Ok, enough of you have replied, so there seems to be a genuine interest here.

I’ll set up a game. It’ll be set in the Mariana Islands and there will be a GMPC who owns a bar and a flying boat. I’m going to avoid things that are too far-fetched, like atomic ray guns and supernatural entities, and you won’t be re-writing history in this little backwater. It’ll be high adventure but on a local scale.

We need to avoid doing character generation here, but have a think about a character ready for your RTJ and remember you can’t all be Indiana Jones!

We’ll probably need a pilot, a mechanic, a spy, an academic, a hunter, a journalist, a medic, etc. A typical dungeon party to cover all the bases.

Think about how you might fit in with the other PCs. We probably need a group who will be acting together, otherwise we’re going to split ourselves up with one or two people per thread and it’ll all fall apart...

I will try to keep the game moving, but there will be an initial set up period during which we will generate characters and determine how they interrelate.
The more players there are, the longer it will take to get a realistic team worked out before we start the story. If you don’t have the patience for this, maybe you won’t enjoy the game.

I’ll let you know when it’s set up, but this week is turning into a bear!

Why don't you start a game and create an OOC thread so we can discuss it further. We can hash out ideas and see if we can make a rounded group prior to starting character generation.

I will do, but I don't multi-task well. Especially on top of all RL distractions.

Right now I want to set up the nuts and bolts of the gamesite layout without the interruptions from players tugging at my sleeve with questions and comments. ;)

Once I have the basic threads and notices set up, I'll let you all in and we can discuss character generation as a team. :)
