IC Fantasy or sci-fi  Anime Mecha game

So I had an interesting idea for a mecha game but was unsure weather any one was interested or weather it should be sci-fi, magitech, clockwork, steam,  or diesel in nature. as for the system I was leaning more towards FATE to make it rules light maybe even semi-freeform with things done by me in the back geound. So here is the pitch

One day THEY showed up. Large biotech creatures that wanted to consume us and had slightly more advanced tech/magic. There was just one catch. Just looking at one of these creature would drive a person into insanity, causing them to become babbling idiots or screaming fools. What was left of mankind retreated to secluded or underground cities. Eventually a Way was discovered to see them but it may of been to little to late. Using reversed engineered tech from the monsters, Large fighting machines where created to combat the creatures and to take back the world mankind once held.

So the idea is a military academy that trains students to use the tech/powers they have to combat the monsters. the reason behind the students ability to fight could be anything. From your standard training the next generation to fight, to they have some mental or magical ability to resist the insanity fields.

There would be large Mobil bases that house the mecha. These groups go out on missions to fight And reclaim or war with other mecha over resources. Then return to the main city.

If Any one has any questions or suggestions I'm open to them, but this is just an interest check.

This sounds like fun but i'd have to learn the systems. Honestly, in my opinion, sci fi or magitech would work best. When it comes to Diesel, Steam, or Clockwork, even damages that seem simple or minimal can cripple the machine, and i doubt we want to deal with scenarios that put players out of commission super fast.
