Tokyo Ghoul

I recently fell in love with the series again and the more I re watch the episodes the more I think how brilliant it would be to rp it out, perhaps prior to the actual timeline of the series itself, running in one of the unmentioned wards of Tokyo perhaps?

Input and thoughts?

Tokyo Ghoul

In my opinion, Tokyo Ghoul's biggest strength was in telling a modern "vampire story" that was free of most of the baggage that has been associated with vampire stories in recent years. It lost the dark romanticism associate with a lot of early vampire literature, but gave us a much better look at the horror aspects, especially through Kaneki's unwilling transformation and the struggle he undergoes in accepting his new "lifestyle".

Playing in the typical setting does remove some of that, because all of the characters would ostensibly be either ghoul's who've had their entire lives to acclimate to the realities of their condition, or regular people who experience the horror of ghoul predation as observers or victims. This not to say there aren't interesting stories to tell here, but it does make it a very different story than what the anime/manga depicts.

Also, for my own opinion, Tokyo Ghoul really suffered in the later episodes as the power scale sort of went out of control. Having investigators who are able to fight ghouls (especially using the tactics and otherwise grisly methods they employ) is fine and good, but the world of the story started to lose some credibility for me as more and more people cropped up who were able to go toe to toe with, not just low-level, but high class ghouls. I think that their presence really undercuts the horror elements of the show which made it stand out.

As for the sorts of concerns you'll need to have if this is a game; I'd be potentially interested if this is running with some sort of system. I generally don't go for straight freeform games anymore. That said, it probably deserves a relatively rules-lite system like fate to focus on the story and characters. I've heard some things about a japanese rpg called doublecross which also sounds relatively in line with the sorts of themes and mechanics a Tokyo Ghoul game would want to explore.
