Vampire: OWOD vs NWOD vs COD

I have been considering starting up a vampire game that may be a cross over with other types, but I am curious.  Do people play the Chronicles of Darkness version of Vampire?  I know many people didn't like the NWOD version, and the OWOD version has a big fan base.  My crossover idea would work better with NWOD or COD, but I don't want to put the work in if the system itself turns people off.

The CoD versions is nWoD second edition.  If you know nWoD, the CoD isn't difficult to pick up.

Run what you know, it'll be easier on you.  You should be able to get players no matter the version you go with.  Vampire is popular in all its iterations.

I know all three systems, I've run several vampire games on the site.  I'm just curious if people play the COD version, or the NWOD, enough for me to choose them over OWOD.

Let me know if you do a Nwod mixer, I have always wondered how a Moros would get along with vampires. I could revive my hypnotist turned mind mage.

I mostly prefer CoD, but NWoD is nice too.

I love the COD system. I enjoy old canon for many of the systems, but COD is such an improvement on NWOD that it makes the game awesome

I like the nWoD/CoD system, but cWoD/oWoD has a special place in my heart especially Ascension.

I would be so in on a CofD crossover game, especially if you were to allow some amount of homebrew (which is still kind of necessary if you're running CofD/2e games, since we don't have a lot of available books for them yet.)

Definitely run CofD if you do, it's such a general improvement over 1e nWoD. And cWoD is good in its own way, but terrible for running crossover games...

my idea was a crossover of mage with vampire.  I wanted to create a fairly structured vampire society that a group of mages would be somewhat forced to deal with to investigate unusual goings on, and the vampire players would be dealing with things outside the normal nightly occurrences for a vampire.  I planned on beefing the vampires up a bit, to put the mages in somewhat of a disadvantage initially, to make walking the gilded halls more dangerous.

I suppose CoD would be the best system to use, since I prefer mage the awakening, and people seem to like CoD.  It may be a little while before I have the idea fully fleshed out, though.  Vampire populations take time to create.

Well I think you'd have a lot of interest. Out of curiosity, would the Mages just be NPC/Antagonists to the Vampires? And I would also have to echo that CofD is preferred

no, it would be two sets of players, that would start off independent of each other and begin to work together as the game progressed, working to resolve a situation that threatened both groups in the city.

That sounds fun, giving the mages a bit of fear for the vampires is a good idea, most crossover games I've seen end up with mages being the top dog pretty quickly due to the sheer power of creative thaumaturgy.

I tend to think the power of mages is a bit exaggerated when viewed by many players, especially in CoD.  Yes, they are definitely the most versatile type of character, but in their designated area, vampires, werewolves, and changelings can really outclass them.  It's only when you compare stuff like a force 5 fireball to a vampire's attacks it seems out of balance, but in all honesty, if a game gets to a point where a mage is flinging force 5 fireballs at vampires, the ST has allowed that to happen over quite a bit of time (it takes a lot of experience for a mage to get to that level).  It's his fault, not the game itself.  He decided on a pvp game in a setting where players are not designed to be equal.

That being said, mages are surprisingly vulnerable to many different ways of hurting them or manipulating them.  you just have to think outside the method of direct confrontation.

For me, mages throwing forces fireballs has actually been the least of worries (though vampires with that whole taking agg from fire might disagree), it's the more subtle effects.

Basically, they are the template that is closest to being batman.  If they have time to plan and prepare, they can be neigh undefeatable, as they will know everything about you, all of your weaknesses, and how to beat you.

That said, I'd rather play on the vampire side of this proposed game, and I really hope you make it.  I'm rather enjoying your Changeling game!

I appreciate the vote of confidence.  These games aren't intended to be pvp though, so I think problems with mages being too hard to kill shouldn't be a big factor.  I need to work on the setting for a while, particularly the vampire establishment which I am envisioning being a bit different than normal.  It will take a fair amount of prior planning.  Also need to figure out what city to put it in.

Mages tend to be unassailable by any other splat IF they are prepared, otherwise they are easily broken like other humans.
