Help with Custom Spell Force Umbrella

I would like some input on creating a spell/magic-item that generates an umbrella of force over the individual to keep them dry.

A ring of force shield is 8,500 gold and that seems insane for this similar item that has no battle application: http://www.dandwiki.com/wiki/SRD:Ring_of_Force_Shield

Wall of Force is a 5th level spell.

But things like Ladder of Force and Force Hammer are only 2nd level: http://dnd.arkalseif.info/dndt.../force-ladder--1671/

I would love any guidance on a way to make this item inexpensive and usefull.

It would be even more epic if the item could:

1. Cover head to toe so no falling rain, even sideways blowing, would reach the person.

2. If the person, and others, could reach through the "umbrella shield" so they aren't hindered from shopping or getting into a door.

Thanks for your thoughts! :D

Yes. Or Pathfinder.

Rez recommended 2,000 gold but I think that's really steep.

I would love to have something priced where a middle class person could afford it. Not just a noble.

We are running a Ptolus campaign and since it rains all the time I thought this could be a cool item for a player character to sell as a business.

Prestidigitation is a spell that can clean and even dry your clothes. I think the magic item would only have to be a little bit beyond that in terms of preventing you from getting wet in the first place

Prestidigitation only affects 1 cubic foot. You'd need to affect at least 12 for a 6 foot tall man.

Still, in that vein, Destroy Water would work, but I think that was taken out for 3.5.

I'd think the Leomund would have come up with a spell at 1st or 2nd level. If you have old magazine, you might check for that sort of thing.

But, if you have the Magic Item Compendium, or some of the other books, you may find it already exists. Try Stormwrack.

Sorry I can't be of more help, but I've moved on to 5th ed, and my 3.5 books are packed away

In terms of utility, I would suggest this is on par or less than Quaal's Feather Tokens. Those range from 50-500gp. Is the GM insisting you create this item using the RAW, or can you just thumbnail the value along those lines?

A cubic foot is one foot to a side with six sides, meaning the surface area for the Prestidigitation spell can affect either 1 ft^3 or 6 ft^2. Since you only want to keep the subject's surface area clean and dry (do not clean and dry a person's insides, don't do it, just don't), one Prestidigitation spell should cut it.

So all you'd need is a magic item with one Continuous cantrip on it. That should be well out of the price range of the middle class, unless you're in a setting where magic is everywhere and has replaced modern technology. Then it's probably the price of a fine suit.

Edge case: what happens when this spell/item interacts with the acid rain effect of Storm of Vengeance?

I would say this negates no magical effects. No splash damage. Nothing.

If a magical storm summoned rain I guess that's non magical rain.

It's really just a story item with zero combat applications

Well I don't know about non combat. You'd be surprised how inventive players can be. And of course there is always the chance that it is a New Clear Umbrella.

But just like prestidigitation it can specify it's no beneficial in combat, which should make it cheaper :D

Bracers of armor +1 are 1,000 gp and that's an always active function that has combat benefits.

I think I would like to make an item that uses a higher level version of prestidigitation. It cannot affect combat or other people at all, simply blocking natural rain from making the person wet.

I like the idea of a 100gp to 500gp price tag to make it "affordable" for the more affluent and not just the super rich.

Some of the feather tokens are single use items and are as low as 50gp, so I realize it needs to cost more than that. Maybe 250gp then.

Anyway, thanks for the input. I'll rock forward. :D
