Old West Game
I am considering running an Old West Game. It would be a Sand Box style with some PVE elements.

I would most likely use Boot Hill 3 edition for the crunchy game Mechanics. But I would like the Players to not have access to their stats. They would know what they can do, but they would have a general adjective to give them an idea.

The reason I like this is that adds a certain suspense to any gunfights or skill use.

I would also add a Charisma/Panache stat.

This is just an interest check

As much as I'd like to, there doesn't appear to be any legal way to acquire the system these days. Though apparently someone is selling a copy on Amazon for $140.

Character Creation easily could be done. By ST with Player. Since players do not have access to direct stats except as a description it would be easy to moderate. Most of the Mechanics happening in the background with the ST simply narrating the round.

Example: a combat round would happen. Players would declare their actions.

Boby the Kid says he will take a quick shot which is the third least accurate, but it is the second fastest which would allow more shots to be fired but at a decreased hit.

Patrick Garrett says he will cling to the wall with rifle for cover but take a careful shot. This is most accurate, but very slow.

The scene would be narrated like this.

Bobby steps out of the saloon realizing that Patrick had set up an ambush him. He draws his peacemaker charging to the horse firing 3 bullets at Patrick. the first two go wide, but the third hits his leg.

Patrick's leg his on fire, and he can barely stand, but his shot rings out like a cannon out of his old Henry striking Bobby hard in the his side.

Next round

At least that would be my guess on it.

I'd be interested, if the GM doesn't mind a Boot Hill newbie.

I actually joined a Boot Hill game that was just getting under way, oh, about a month ago, but it seems to have died due to GM abandonment. We had done a little IC posting, but hadn't gotten to any of the crunchy parts of the game yet.

Count me as interested, but I have never even heard of Boot Hill, so if I joined, you'd have to bear with me.

Well, I'm up for trying. Though it would essentially be freeform in play, and I'm not much of a fan of freeform. I suppose having the mechanics behind the curtain run by the ST might work though.

Next would be what setting people would like. I like either Kansas- Missouri or Texas(Southwest New Mexico and Arizona) all after the Civil war.

Bloody Kansas would be the struggle to try and re-establish after the civil war. Mostly outlaws and social commentary on the time

The SouthWest would be more broad including Indians, horse wrangling, and of course outlaws.

Being a sandbox, I am not encouraging PvP, but the possibility exists. The game would also have other aspects like town building and social interaction.

Any Suggestions would be helpful.

THis was a character I rolled for another game
The stats are rated from 7 to 20. With Luck and Statures initial totals being divided in half because they can rise or fall from in game play.

Preacher JK Cooke

Strength 18
Coordination 18
Observation 16
Stature 6
Luck 7
Charisma 9

If, I was going to write it up for the game I am proposing it would be
Strength Very Fast
Coordination Very Strong
Observation Smart
Stature Known in town
Luck Above Average
Charisma Awkward
Or something like this

The Preacher was nearly a God among men. He was known to be faster than almost any one in the county. Many fast men were slender denoting their speed, but not the Preacher he was one of the most muscular men any had seen. Most doubted that any could beat him in an arm wrasslin match.

The Preacher was no dummy either. He seemed to see and know things that most of the other townsfolk didn't. In our neck of the woods most people had heard of him, but our woods are not that big.

He wasn't rude or anything, just more direct than most folks. Maybe his size made him a little less approachable than most.

The Preacher was not know to be unlucky, but he was not necessarily lucky either.

In reply to hegemon (msg # 10):

Both settings have their appeal -- post war Kansas/Missouri had the James boys and the Youngers, of course. But if you're asking for a show of hands, I would vote for the great Southwest -- the canvas just seems a little bit bigger to me, a bit more "frontier-like", and the Southwest of that day and time is what I think of when I think of the old ("wild") West.

That said, I'm sure that I could play and write in either setting. :)

Count me interested as well, I was also part of the group that Tancred mentioned earlier. Seemed to have a pretty good group of characters for a old west game and then the GM mysteriously vanished.

I also would vote for the southwest.

I am still working on set up. Also considering Wyoming, but the number 1 choice right now is New Mexico some where near the Santa Fe Trail which drovers took cattle back towards Texas or even further.
