[IC] Street Fighter

After an extended absence from RPOL due to life threatening illness (Dying turned out to be something I am bad at thankfully) I have started itching to run something but it has to be something fairly light and easy because my health is still ...rough. So I have been thinking about indulging my love of martial arts, video games, and cheesy over the top action. In this case I am thinking about dusting off my copy of the old Street Fighter RPG from White Wolf. I know the game has issues but it's fun for all that. So before I start to seriously work on it I thought I'd see if anyone was interested.

What I Am Thinking:
- Using House Rules and Errata to fix the most egregious issues (Animal Hybdrid, Cyborg, Cartwheel Kick, etc) but keeping it to a minimum. I want simple and light.

- Using the setting more or less as is. Tournaments, prize fights, dealing with Shadoloo, etc. Basically an excuse to have over the top martial arts action in a variety of places with a wide variety of people.

- Having one or two editors who can help me with the game. I want this so that if my health falters they can continue any fights or scenes while I recover. A redundancy system as it were.

So would anyone be interested?

Sure, I'd be interested. I love the White Wolf game but rarely had the chance to play it.

That is just fine, Griffin. I have no problem introducing the system to people and helping them with it. It is fairly easy being a streamlined version of the old White Wolf (Vampire the Masquerade, etc) system and I can share all the pertinent information in game.

In reply to deadmanshand (msg # 4):

Well we could always run a chronicle not unlike a cheesy 80s martial arts film. I confess that although I love the wu xia genre, the 80s film were also plenty of fun. Personally I prefer Adult games mainly because of what Shadoloo gets up to tends to skirt the ratings if ever shown and we are basically participating in a blood sport. However something more light hearted might also be fun with us as an up and coming Stable of fighters.

One idea I can float is the premise of a Chronicle I used long ago. It is the height of the Cold War and the Street Fighter tournaments have become a proxy battle just like so many other avenues of competition. Teams sponsored by the Communist bloc fight Capitalist dogs and freedom loving people everywhere oppose those Commie bastards. There is plenty of pomp, posturing and rivalry not unlike the WWE of the 80s as teams fight for as much national pride as they do personal profit. Into this steps a bunch of nobodies. Well we won't be nobodies for long. Time to do your talking in the ring. As an unaffiliated team going places, soon people take notice and we get intrigue and offers from both sides....

I love the idea of an 80's scenario (largely because I played SF in the 80's. Go figure.). I think the street fighter RPG (looking at my copy on the shelf!) lends itself to a little less 'dark', which is just fine with me!

@Togashi - I'm gonna go Mature. You can still have darker elements in Mature. You just can't have it in graphic detail.

A lot of the details of what you are talking about will already be present in the campaign. Pomp, circumstance, PR, schmoozing, etc. All the good stuff.

@CrazyIvan - That is pretty much what I was thinking.

@T.S. - Yeah. It is actually the printed information for the game compiled in one pdf. I am actually going to link it in game. I will be using some extra material beyond that but it will be mostly to fix some imbalances.

Seeing a "Street Fighter" world that's somewhere between a Tarantino movie and 1980s style WWF Kayfabe with a dash of Pink Mohawk would be kind of amazing.

This is one of those games everyone I know had, but I never played because any time someone started a campaign, it fell apart nearly instantly because everyone tried to play it like a gladiator arena and no thought to any kind of gloriously cheesy plot was ever given.

@drewalt - While it won't quite be what you are suggesting there it will have gloriously cheesy plots. M. Bison is one of my all time favorite video game villains for a reason.

@Karixia - There will be a link to the rules in the game.

And now that I am at 6 interested I'll start working on the game tonight or tomorrow.

In reply to GreyGriffin (msg # 14):

So true. The original RPG was written by mid 90s White Wolf so the fluff is pretty dark. Slavery, mind control, drug cartels, murder for hire and making Cammy wear a small silly tie are just some of the horrible crimes Shadoloo gets up to. Organized crime pretty much rules the street. They even had suicide mooks that would burn up into a charred skeleton if you defeated them. Not exactly the kind of material that makes up a General Rating game.

Which is why another common interpretation is a lot less serious with a plenty of Ham and Cheese. Honestly I find it more fun than the world presented in the original Street Fighter RPG. Its entirely possible that a game is set in the 80s rather than the default broad strokes 90s setting (ie the Cold War is still in full swing, the USSR has yet to fall apart) with a Rise of Shadoloo chronicle. The Hydra has yet to grow to full strength, all the World Warriors from canon are still young rookies and our characters are blissful ignorant of the machinations in the shadows for a certain dictator to come to power.

There will be elements of this. The enemy is a criminal cartel run by a psychic lunatic but he will also be a more over the top lunatic rather than a "Holy ****!" lunatic.

This is more or less what I had in mind with the caveat that the Street Fighter 2 characters will be World Warriors. What characters I choose to add from later games (whether because I like them or popular appeal from the players) will be less than World Warriors. The exception will be the criminal organizations that showed up after Shadoloo and their bosses (ie Illuminati, Sin, Gill, Seth, etc) as they will not be showing up. I like Shadoloo and Akuma best as far as major villains go.

Now an idea I am thinking seriously about using that I want to run by all of you first. First off a statement. If the majority does not want to use this system we will not use this system. Secondly this is mostly a system to reduce system load on my end so that I can focus on the game a bit more. Third - it will be much better laid out and I promise quite simple. I have absolutely no desire to complicate things. I do have a desire to make the game as easy and light to run as possible while I recover.

Do away (for the most part*) with the XP system and go with a more organic system. Basically you get better at better at what you do. When you successfully use a skill or Technique in a scene (but only once per scene) it gets a check. When it has a number of checks equal to the new level it goes up. Attributes and backgrounds will follow a version of this as well. This automates the growth process (taking a lot of work off of me and making character growth a matter of in game actions) and encourages a wider diversity of action from the players.

*I have not come up with a solid idea of using the same growth system for Special Manuevers but I have an easy system in mind for dealing with that.

Re: [IC] Street Fighter

This may be a deciding point for some people's interest. Will there be canon characters? If so, will they be able to be playable PC's or will they be encountered by the PC's.

Personally, I would prefer having non-canon PC's occasionally encounter canon NPC's.

Sounds fun. :)

As for the new system, sure why not? Will we be able to "train" our abilities in our downtime? IE we have so many "slots" during downtime that we can fill up with background things that might add checks to skills that we might not have a chance to learn in Chronicle. For example, a character might spend some time taking a postal correspondence course in accounting to gain a few checks in Finance for example.

Re: [IC] Street Fighter

@TS - There will be no canon PCs. The canon characters will be NPCs and you will be encountering them. Not as much as the beginning but as you increase in Rank...

@Togashi - Downtime training sounds like an appropriate thing. Have some downtime, do a training montage post, and add a check kind of thing. Seems like a solid idea.

Yay! After all no 80s martial arts flick is complete without some sort of training montage set to a rock ballad. :D
