[IC] D&D 4E - Epic Level Campaign

Greetings folks,

I'm thinking about running a high-level D&D 4th edition campaign here. As it has been quite some time since my visit to rpol I'm not really sure how many players are still around who enjoy 4th edition and how much general interest there is for such a campaign, hence my Interest Check here.

As of yet I don't have any concrete plans about the setting and campaign; would like to see first if it would be feasible at all before I spend more time on this idea.

Thanks!

[IC] D&D 4E - Epic Level Campaign

In reply to Archaeon (msg # 1):

I am very interested! I have never played any edition of D&D at Epic level, but 4th Edition seemed like it handled it well. I'd love to find out.

My main misgivings are:
The complexity of even a very straightforward epic group, particularly with so many options for immediate actions, which play havoc with play-by-post.
The potential ease with which epic options can result in monstrously powerful synergies (constant stuns, impossible-to-hit characters, etc.), both in individual characters and the whole party. I'd hope there would still be challenge.

But I'm definitely interested!

I'd be down to face some Epic foes in Epic fashion.

Agreed. I have thought about this issue as well, but there doesn't seem an easy fix other than asking the players to keep the power-choices that are Immediate Interrupts and Reactions to a minium. There will still be the need for retroactive changes to posts, but I hope everyone can agree that those should be avoided if possible to keep the combat flowing.

I hope so as well, but I'm rather optimistic when it comes to this point. I have several inspirational sources of how to handle epic enemies and encounters to help me deal with this potential problem. In the end I guess we will have to wait and see how things turn out, but I'm up for the challenge!

Re: [IC] D&D 4E - Epic Level Campaign

If you aren't already using it, you might want to consider using the old Masterplan program for keeping track of combats. Its combat-manager side tracks initiative, held/readied actions, attack rolls, saving throws, ongoing effects, etc. It handles "end of X turn" and "beginning of x turn" conditions properly, and can even account for resistances when handling damage rolls. (You have to manually handle ongoing damage, though.)

If you don't already have it but want to find it again, PM rMail me. I've kept a copy for such an occasion.

Alright, four people should be enough to start a game, thanks for the interest! I'll mull it for over a few days more and then let you guys know if I created a game.
