Call of Cthulhu / Cthulhu Rising

This is mostly a question about sanity. I've never been a fan of the mechanic, though that may be due to the basic CoC group that I was blessed with so long ago. I'm putting the finishing touches on a Cthulhu Rising game and wanted to hear opinions/ experiences with sanity in the PbP style.

Given the more futuristic aspect, and the basic idea that meeting other races would be expected, one would think that the average person would not be so readily unsettled as compared to someone from 1920's

You can certainly modify it. Meeting other races may not be traumatic, but seeing the dead rise up, or watching and Alien type creature would certainly cause Sanity loss.

In the games I run, sanity checks are always based on the character's world view.  So yeah, a person who knows that alien races exist isn't going to need one when confronted by one.  Now, if they've got a fear of spiders and come face to face with an alien race that looks like a gigantic spider, they'd need a check.  That can vary from character to character.
