Star trek game (Freeform or 2d20)

I used to play a lot of those Star trek Simm games that were popular in the early 2000's. One of the games that will always stay with me, revolved around a ship sent to explore the Gamma quadrant after the Hobus event and the building tension with the Klingon empire.

I'd like to start a game with a similar idea. So set in 2395, twenty years after the Dominion wars, with a crew set off to a mission from which they likely will not return, at least not soon, as their goal is to set up a permanent Federation presence behind the borders of the crumbling Domninion.

The game will be set to adult as I would like the players to be able to work unrestrained as much as possible within the site rules.

The game would involve some explicit content, but would mainly focus on adventurers and pathfinders exploring an uncharted part of the universe, trying to build a home for themselves and those that follow.

What's the "feel" of the game like? I didn't much care for the war stories of DS9, and TOS didn't really strike my fancy in any way. Voyager was okay but felt forced, and Enterprise ... well, Enterprise was enjoyable enough, but it felt a bit forced too. I'm a TNG guy myself, so if you're looking for that sort of exploration I might be interested.

I'm interested, especially if there's a strong exploration component. I want strange new worlds and space anomalies. :) Too few games here actually go for that, it's always been politics and conflict.

What do you see the players as, senior staff or as junior officers and crew? A lot of games follow the series by making PCs department heads and senior officers, but struggle as PCs vanish. I like them as up-and-coming young Starfleet personnel chosen as problem-solvers and trouble-shooters for the current plot, where they can be easily shuffled off as they disappear.

My idea is to do a mix of these things, yes there'll be conflict and diplomacy, but it is an unknown part of the universe, so we'll see spatial anomolies, new aliens and stranger things.

Another big part of the game, like in the series is the crew itself. Their lives, relationships and coping with being this far away from home, maybe forever.

I guess it would be a cross between TNG and voyager if it was broadcast on HBO.

As for crew leaving. Part of the RTJ will be that if you're away without notice for a certain time (14 days I'm thinking) you're considered AWOL. If you leave or are AWOL, your characters will be taken over by the GM team and suitably killed off if a replacement is found.

That being said, players are more than welcome to play junior officers or even enlisted crew.

Okay, cool.

Ah, but which system? I misread the "d20" in the subject line. Freeform is fine, but Modiphius's 2d20 is the worst system I've ever seen (granted, I haven't seen many, but it's definitely the worst).

I have to say I disagree. Having played hundreds of systems over the years, 2D20 was a refreshing system. Simple, comprehensive and very little number crunching. Plus the idea of using threat dice to make something easier now, only to mean stuff will get harder later on is very Star trek indeed.

I'm keen on the premise, and interested in playing the new 2d20 system, but I have less than zero interest in a graphic / explicit / adult Trek game.

I'd only play freeform, alas. I don't have time to pick up a new system. Well, no desire, anyway. (Although time is also true enough.)
