Interest Check: Project Monarch

Something I've been considering...

If you watched "Godzilla" (2014) AND "Kong: Skull Island" (2017) you are aware these two now share the universe.  Project Monarch is a secret multinational project tasked with hunting and studying MUTOs as potentially the greatest threat to humanity.  Players would be agents of Monarch.

The way I see the game is more or less pulp adventure - exotic places, larger than life heroes, ancient prophesies, possibly ancient artifacts, monsters of all kind... Giant Monsters.

Also the game will probably be heavy on mystery and problem solving.  I mean if you do find MUTO, just firing at it everything you've got probably won't do the trick - you'll have to study it and figure out something more sophisticated then "let's shoot it"

At the moment I am thinking the game would be set in 1970s, right after the events of Kong: Skull Island.  I might reconsider, but definitely before events of Godzilla (2014) since Monarch goes public after that and I like that "secret organization" bit.

Any takers?

I watched Skull Island over last weekend and couldn't stop thinking the same thing.

Have you got a system in mind?

Open to discussion.

Definetely something open source so players won't have any trouble getting it.

Possibly GURPS lite, but I don't like crunchy systems. ;)

Possibly WuShu (I love narrative systems) but it might be hard to handle mysteries, WuShu is really set for action.

Possibly Active Exploits.

I have homebrew system designed specifically to emulate Pulp Expeditions, but that's unpolished and unbalanced at the moment so probably not.

And I am always open to Freeform ;)

Resolute, Adventurer, Genius

It's a free and easy system designed for Pulp Adventure. I'd love to play it!

I'd be very down for this! Of those systems, I only know GURPS lite, but I'm always happy to learn new things. I looked through the Resplute, Adventurer, Genius system and it seems pretty good!

Not familiar with RAG either, but skimmed through PDF, seems straight forward enough.

Crunchy (numbers heavy) which I am not big fan of, but not a big problem either.

We'll vote on the system, before (if) I create the game.

Do you expect to have the non monster part of the game strictly mundane, or would you be willing to consider something at least slightly odd or non human if not fully supernatural in your telling of what is obviously at least a near miss from the real world?

I expect most of the story to deal with... shall we say extraordinary.  Think King Kong  (2004) movie.  Kong (or other MUTOs/Kaiju) are basically boss monsters, but to get to them you'll need to get through... oh say... roaches the size of a dog, weird locals, thought to be extinct species, giant leech things, magnetic and other navigational anomalies, freak weather, and so on.

However, there will be nothing supernatural in essence... but there might supernatural in appearance.  For example a local shaman might be able to read your thoughts, but that's cause he is a telepath, not cause he is a wizard.  "Science is magic" basically. :D

Just to add

I expect there will be lost worlds complete with ruins of ancient cities.

I expect there will be cults worshiping ancient "gods" possibly honoring them with human sacrifices.

I suppose there will be human rivals (70s, cold war, Russians might have their own Monarch).

There will be irresponsible scientists willing to poke a sleeping dragon to see what will happen.

...you got the idea. ;)

Looks like there is enough interest, I'll start on the game, will post link here when ready (probably early next week)

In the meantime, if you intend to play please vote on the system, sorry if I don't include your suggestions but if I am going to GM I need something I am comfortable with.

So the choice are (in no particular order):
1. Active Exploit ( http://zork.net/~nick/loyhargil/rpgnow/diceless.pdf )
2. RAG ( http://www.stargazergames.eu/g...e-adventurer-genius/ )
3. Freeform
