[Interest Check] GURPS DFRPG
So, I've cracked the new boxed set and I want to run something, but I'm not sure what.

Hexcrawl?  Megadungeon? Standard questy campaign?

So if you're interested in a DFRPG game, give me an idea of what you'd be interested in playing in.

[Interest Check] GURPS DFRPG
I'm vaguely interested.  I've never had much luck with Dungeon Fantasy, though.

Re: [Interest Check] GURPS DFRPG
Well, here's my pointed opinion on GURPS:

For a GURPS to be the right choice of a game system, the game has to do things at least as well as the more "common" system used for that game type.  When it comes to Dungeon Fantasy, you're in a place where you're largely retreading the ground of dozens of other games out there and you have to figure out why GURPS is the right choice for that game over a dozen other systems that do the same thing with a lot less overhead.  It has to be something that wouldn't work more smoothly in D&D, Pathfinder, OSR, etc.

In general, GURPS shines brightest when the game has a twist that just wouldn't work in other systems or that GURPS handles better.

Anyway, I'd be down for giving it another shot.  I could see doing almost anything, but it kind of comes back to what I said above.  What aspect of the game makes it better to run the game in GURPS than a simpler system?  Why is it going to be more awesome to do this in GURPS (which generally requires more work) than another system?

Usually, when you figure out the answer to that, the game idea gels pretty quickly.  For instance, if you're going to do a lot of planar travel, GURPS would be a great way to do that kind of game.  If you're going to have a world exposed to reality rifts with a mix of tech and magic being involved, GURPS is a great choice.  If you're going to do a lot of time travel, GURPS is a great choice.

The reason why I struggle to enjoy Dungeon Fantasy is that it feels like a lot of work to do something that'd probably just work better in some D&D variant.  Any concept that makes me say "yeah, GURPS would be better for that" has my vote.  I'm... not sure a standard hex crawl or megadungeon is going to qualify for that.

The "twist" for GURPS is customization of your Character.  Something every D&D edition and clone struggles with and is frankly better done in a non-D&D system.

Duly noted, but there will be no such twists like what you are describing.

Re: [Interest Check] GURPS DFRPG
I'm a huge GURPS fan, and lately I've been really into the whole Dungeon Crawling thing, so at the very least I can say I'm interested in... something, but to be honest I'm not sure specifically what. Normally I wait for an advertisement that appeals to me and jump at it, but I can work backwards every now and then.

For the record, I've been enjoying GURPS DF for a while now, but I haven't seen the DFRPG. I understand they're very similar but with some differences; just what those differences are I have no idea, but I've heard they exist.

Fantasy-wise, I tend to prefer either Low Fantasy along the lines of the old Conan stories, or else "classic" settings (especially those with nascent gunpowder technology). That probably isn't much to go on, but I figured I'd pipe up all the same.

I'm with Cloudy. I love GURPS and have a fair bit of experience with "classic DF," though I don't have the DFRPG set.

I'm good for classic quests with a decent amount of dungeon-crawling.

I haven't seen any non-D&D system that doesn't do character customization better. Even Dungeon World has Class Warfare. And I have a pathological need to absorb as many systems as I possibly can.

DFRPG is more "streamlined".  For the most part it's the Basic Set with all optional rules removed and a few things made more simple.

I haven't dropped this idea, I've just been trying to figure out how to do this with a group of people who do not have the chargen templates (and no, I'm not typing up all the templates and races and posting them).

I think the easiest solution for me is I offer semi-pregenned characters.  You guys tell me what you want to play off a list, and I put it together leaving some options for you to pick.

And it sounds like classic quest style with dungeon delves is what I'm going to do.

Re: [Interest Check] GURPS DFRPG
If it's mostly similar to the old Dungeon Fantasy, I suspect it'll be pretty easy for people to pick templates and then go from there.  As long as not a lot of the guts changed, most of the people interested would know the stuff at least a bit - and the ones that don't probably won't mind you making the characters for them.

Re: [Interest Check] GURPS DFRPG
There's quite a bit of changes template wise.  But that's mostly in what Advantages and Disads are available.  A bit more than I care to type out... also going through and figuring out what is left out, what is carried over.  And checking skills to make sure there were no changes there?

Just easier to list templates and races and make the characters (as I said, leaving some choices available).

In reply to evileeyore (msg # 11):

I'm in.

Also, I converted my old DF PCs so I trudged through most of the changes.  The Races that were kept didn't change other than some wording. The Professions didn't change much.

In any case, I have the old rules, the new rules, GCA, the fillable PDFs, etc. and I'm willing to help you get this rolling.

Alright, I've at least got the board set up.
