Interest Check: Game of the 1966-1971 tv show DARK SHADOWS
I know this is a longshot, but I'm currently a player (well, technically) in a number games where the GM has disappeared. I've found that my best bet for daily RPG satisfaction comes from GMing my own games-- the one sure method of ensuring that a games' GM will be around as often as I am: to become the GM.

So I'm sitting here, thinking, well, what else would you like to run?

And I replied Well, I've dreamed of running a game based on the late 1960s-early 1970s horror/supernatural soap opera DARK SHADOWS...

So... how about it? Anyone want to role-play in a homebrewed gothic soap opera of vampires and ghosts (and werewolves and gypsies and time travel and witches and cultists and zombies and weirder things)?

Knowledge of the show not required...

I think I caught about 1-2 of those shows. Really cheesy. BUT - a game set in the swinging sixties with creatures of the night in it might be quite interesting.

Freeform, or a particular rules set? (I recommend Ghastly Affair, if the latter. There's a free PDF version available at https://engineoforacles.wordpress.com/downloads/...)

Starchaser: Dark Shadows is a very gothic '60s... but there might be lots of time travel and different timelines...

Alyse: I was thinking freeform, but Ghastly Affair is kind of neat... would the answer make a difference regarding you joining or not?

I would be much more inclined to join were you using Ghastly Affair, and more inclined if you were using some sort of system. I'm not a huge fan of freeform.

I personally am ok with both system and freeform. I'll take a look at ghastly affair. If system I would prefer classless and one that has some form of build point system rather than random rolls.

Ghastly Affair is class- and level-based, not my preference either, but the rules are very evocative of the gothic romances.

I could probably work out a basic point-buy thing for Ghastly Affair if a player didn't want to roll... So that could be the best of both worlds...

Hi! I'm interested too! I have only seen a couple of episodes, but I've read quite a few articles (especially about that storyline with Barnabas and the Leviathans) and I'm intrigued by the whole weird Dark Shadows approach to Gothic.

I'd say that was enough interest for the OP to close this thread and create a game, wouldn't you?

In reply to Starchaser (msg # 10):

Been a busy few days for me, with no immediate let-up in sight. Right now...

1. Although I still think the Ghastly Affair system is neat, it's new to me, and I'm still trying to find enough time to familiarize myself with it properly... I had planned to go somewhat freeform, so that's slowing me down. If I abandon that and go freeform anyway, it appears I'll lose a player...

2. I'm also kinda waiting to see if and when my schedule will stabilize... I don't want to be spread too thin to get back to players properly...

There is another alternative to Ghastly Affair, by the way, though its scope might seem a touch narrower... Bedlam Hall. It's yet another fabulous game powered by the Apocalypse World Engine, albeit one without a handy free version like Ghastly Affair.

I prefer freeform or Ghastly Affair to Apocalypse World.

Im personally fine with anything. Ive played AW and it was fun but not for the faint hearted the rules practically state that the MCs job is to mess with your head! And he certainly did that!
