Checking temperature for RT game. The origin path and ship construction has been a problem in the past. Suggesting creating a NPC Captain or a very strong Captain who is ready to handle the tiller and send the group into the Expanse with a specific Endeavor in mind.

Please rmail or continue thread. Any suggestions or hooks please feel free to drop a line here, any Captains with strong inclinations to lead the group please rmail me first, I would prefer we speak in private quarters about the mission before things get... complicated.

All books open RT and DH 1st Edition, no Dark Eldar no room for torture chambers. Kroot crackshot's and Ork Weirdboyz are a possibility depending on Captains inclinations.

Basically Ship will be pre-made with obvious room left to switch out for specific PC needs and addition to PF and such.

Captains must understand if the ship is for:

A. Raiding
B. Trading
C. Exploration
D. War

A Captain would be classified as a Co-GM and be able to keep narrative going I believe this is important for two factors. The game hinges on authority, it is a Letter of Marquee I understand PC's don't want that position so Sensechal for you. The captain need be wanting to make major decisions for the good of the ship and crew. With the rest of the PC's understanding a GM is keeping the Captain in line with 'Nids and Warp Kraken if he steps out of line. So if you want to drive the boat send a rmail and we can work something out.

Well, I do enjoy Rogue Trader quite a bit, at least the idea anyway, even if most games never go anywhere.  I'd be glad to run as a Trader.

RT and their Captains have some of the same issues that Ascension ran into with Inquisitors.  You've got a PC in the position of 'command' and the other PC's have to be good with that and the direction that the one in 'command' makes.  I've seen it done all three ways...NPC RT, PC RT that is a Co-GM and a PC RT that isn't.  Even in the case of the one that wasn't a Co-GM they had a closer commentary with the GM and a loose understanding that when the GM nudged in certain ways that they would work a way to then direct the crew in said direction as it was 'broad plot' rather than something like into death or out of death.

As to the books...

So does that mean you're looking at having crew that either is RT or roughly 5th rank DH characters?

I also agree that having a decent idea of what you are going to do with the voidship is important as it will color everything.  It's also important that the rest of the crew know what the voidship is for as well so that ideas can mesh better.  That should also color the direction that the ST and the RT use for the basic outline of the ship itself when building things up like you have in this idea.

I'm a fan of bridge warmer rogue traders. Helps the gm establish who they are, the ship, the crew, and what amount of flaunting imperial law flies straight away, before PCs come in.
Plus, could also mean getting the Exceptional Leader bonus takes some work.

Trading seems to be the way most RT Captains want to go. Has anyone ever run a Faith & Coin game, it seems like it could be really fun. A "Embrace the Serpent" or "Aguirre: Wrath of God" situation with the natives, and Xenos...

Honestly, I like Adventure, but I also like trading over the base banditry that's pretty common from what I notice.  I tend to run Traders as what the ideal is--mobile beacons of light on the distant frontier, who bring news, treasure, and the Imperium's protection along with them.

Because what it boils down to is that I feel 40K is a depressing enough setting without the protagonists contributing to the ash heap.  I don't care if it basically makes things harder because the universe hates nice people, I just want to try running idealists for a change.

Always up for a Rogue Trade campaign but never found one on RPoL that last past the character creation phase :(

Would prefer a campaign with some depth and characterisation, so Criminal or Faith would be of interest

Well that is seven for the game. I am going to get to work on setting up the game and working out the ship with the Captain. I will get back to each and everyone of you via rMail when the game is ready, and post a link in this thread.

It may take some time although the time spent I believe will make the game better for all.

It is going to be some time before I get the game up and ship ready but I am keeping everyone on a list. Captain's can always rmail me with applications and what kind Dynasty they wish to start on the Origin Path.

Doing this slowly as I have had too many games burn out and it is a lot up front to do before game gets going.

The impression I've got so far is ultimately there will be only one Captain who will also cover light co-gm duties in doing what they can to make sure things don't go off the rails and toss about orders to keep people busy who are floundering.

That said at the moment it appears as MM is entertaining anyone who wants to try and take that Captain role so they can see if any one persons loose concept plus style mesh well enough with theirs so that the entire things runs smoothly.  Hence the Rmail to him that allows them to figure that out since doing that here isn't part of the setup of GPIA as I'm familiar with.
