Re: CHAPTER 2 - Hell on Ear-... er... Mars.
Raven pulled out his quickly diminishing pack of smokes, withdrew one, and lit it while he listened to the other talk. When the pilot was finished, the old Splicer removed the cancer stick from his beak while blowing out a lung full of chemicals before making his reply.
"Let's say for shits and giggles you're walking down the street one day, and you find on the ground a good sum of money. You now have a choice of what to do with it, but what would that be? You could find the person who lost it, give it back to them, and it turns out to be money they saved to save their family's house. Or you could give it a shelter, and feed everyone there for a month. Or you could throw your friends one hell of a party. No matter which one of those you pick, someone is going to think it was right and someone else wrong.
"To be less general about it, let's say, speaking of Spirits, that I see the Headless Horseman chasing someone. Do I use my powers to stop him, or do I pull a gun and kill the person he's chasing? If I pick A, I'm on the good side of the people who know the dude I just saved. If I pick B, I now am owed a favor by a legendary fighter which I may use later to save someone else, plus whomever sent him in the first place will look with favor on me.
"You just said I saw one of the Courts, meaning of course there are more. I was welcomed in this one, Ares Himself even shook my hand. You think I'd get that reception in a Court ruled by, say, Budda?
"My point to this is, no matter what you do, some are going to love you, and some hate you. A hero to one, a villain to another. I can attempt to be a good guy, and get Spirits to like me, but when one does their enemy will then see me as their enemy too. All I can do, all anyone can ever do, is choose what they think is best at the time and do their damnedest to back it up.
"In a nutshell, I'll be a shaman to some, a name taker to others. Which will I be remembered as? That just depends on who writes the history books, in the end. 'Let a man be a man, and people judge him as they may'. All I can tell you, is I'll do my best not to cock it up."
With a smile and a wave, the druggie departed the ship.
