Ah! I suck. Busy week, and I can't easily access rpol or my books at work. I will post to move things along tonight once I get off work (early Saturday morning).

Okay, I do like that part of the party's plan now is to 'ask the cats what they think'. If the cat has anything useful to say, maybe we can recruit her into the group!

Hehe.  Well I couldn't really read the text so my best option was to try to memorize part of it...did that...and then with so many cats and Bast and stuff...what the heck, why not.  There's enough strange stuff happening.

There is a Dutch translation he's working on. It's several pages, maybe a dozen (with notes). He demurred over making an English translation as that would take a lot of work and he's focused on finishing his own Dutch version first.

so he's a SLACKER. Noted.

Realistically, I imagine translating from Egyptian to Dutch is quite an ordeal, because it requires deciphering meaning, whereas translating from Dutch to English is not (because he already has the meaning, and they're even related languages).

Probably true on both accounts.

He's mainly focused on completely finishing his task of primary translation.

You could always try and make it worth his while?

Okay, between changing currencies twice and a different era, I don't know how much is a good amount here. Currently a living wage in Egypt is around $100-200 per month. He seems to be struggling to survive. So $1,000 (in modern money) seems like a good amount?

Re: OOC Posts II

Hi,

A while back currency came up.

An Egyptian pound is worth roughly an English pound, and the exchange is about $4 to the pound. $1000 would be worth a lot of money!

The Keeper:
Currency:

After doing some reading on British currency in the CoC Monograph "Kingdom of the Blind" and some online research on Egyptian currency, I've figured a few things out.

At this point Egyptian Pound (E£ or LE) is basically pegged to the Pound Sterling (£) at a little less than 1-for-1. The most common pound notes is E£ 1, and these are relatively rare, E£5 are more rare but available. By far and away most transactions would be in coins. Egyptian coins are the piastre, which are worth 1/100 a pound, and further divided into 10 millimes (1000 millemes/pound).

The common term for an Egyptian pound is a "Genēh" of Geni, from Guinea.

I had undervalued the pound in transactions, going forward they are going to be far more relatively valuable.

I figure I'm paying for about 1.5 to two months of work. The guy is a professional, so I don't know if the appropriate rate is 'professional' rates or 'hey don't starve' rates. I mean, he seems pretty desperate, I'm sure I could twist the knife. But I'd sort of like him to do a good job, since I might be incanting these spells while giant monsters are coming after us and all.

How much would be reasonable?

Molly's predicament reminds me of a story I read many moons ago. As I recall, it didn't end well. Did Molly by any chance wear perfume today tasting of cauliflower or spicy pepper? She might be wishing she had soon...

LOL.  With all the food she has been eating here lately I'm sure spicey pepper would be one.  Does anything end well in a CoC game?  Molly DID give Cynthia a chance to talk her out of going though.  :)

Re: OOC Posts II

In reply to Cynthia Jane Holloway (msg # 796):

In today's dollars, USD$1000 is worth over $13000. According to the book $1000 is enough to rent a house (not just a flat or apartment) in this period in America. In Cairo you could probably do the same for USD$1000-2000.

Paradoxically, due to this being an RPG there are few monetary restraints. A thousand or a million is just the same to Cynthia (it's all just fictional anyways). Be warned then too high an offer might create suspicion if not handled carefully.

As for Molly, what's the worse that could happen?

Gotcha. So a month wages for someone like him would be around $600? Guessing about $300 for renting his little flat + $100 for food + some actual profit for him?

In reply to Cynthia Jane Holloway (msg # 802):

About Molly being abducted and sold into the White slave trade? Which as we know is a lot more terrible than the regular old non-White slave trade. Kind of the "fettucini Alfredo" of slave trading, I guess?

I see that The Sheikh would have been a very popular movie back then, being released in 1921. If it was Rudolph Valentino doing the buying I am certain that any woman would go willingly!

quote:
Valentino tried to distance the character from a stereotypical portrayal of an Arab man. Asked if Lady Diana (his love interest) would have fallen for a "savage" in real life, Valentino replied, "People are not savages because they have dark skins. The Arabian civilization is one of the oldest in the world...the Arabs are dignified and keen-brained."

Ah, Rudolph! Always the Sheikh of our hearts.

OK! It's that time of year again, when we head into the BC wilderness for a week of hanging out at a summer camp. With no internet access. I should be out of comms on Friday, lasting about a week.

Re: OOC Posts II

How far away is the Clive expedition from Cairo? You mentioned we have a letter permitting us to visit it. Is this a common thing? Is it even a prudent thing?

Edit: From the game thread, it is: " Clive expedition's digs under the Museum's auspices."

Like sites they've already been to? Visiting with the expedition has its own perils, but I can't imagine visiting their work sites is that bad.

Totally unrelated question, how is everyone else doing? I know I like sniffing out EVERY possible trail, but if people are bored with Cairo, I can shut up :) I'm really okay moving on, as long as we don't think we're liable to get killed owing to something we didn't know.

Re: OOC Posts II

In reply to Cynthia Jane Holloway (msg # 807):

The Clive expedition is about 20 miles south of Cairo in Dashur/Memphis, on the opposite bank of the Nile. This is also about 20 miles south of the Pyramids and Sphinx at Giza, which is also on the west bank of the Nile.

All foreign expeditions are subject to Egyptian authority via the Museum in Cairo. Your letter from Dr. Khafour will guarantee the utmost cooperation from Sir Clive and his people.

So far, you don't really know what's going on in Cairo with regards to Jackson Elias' investigation, other than the Penhew Expedition was involved in very suspicious activity. From your experiences with the Penhew Institute and Edward Gavigan in England there is some connection to the Black Brotherhood (cultists who worship the Black Pharaoh).

The Clive expedition is also affiliated with the Penhew Foundation (and the late Dr. Gavigan) so there is likely a possible cultist connection there. But not everyone on that expedition might be in the know. Van Huevelen's story seemed to contradict what Sir Clive publicly released about the mummy, that the identity is unknown and nothing of value was found in the hidden burial chamber in Menkaure's Pyramid. Instead, he confirmed the mummy was that of Queen Nitocris, bride and priestess of the Black Pharaoh. You have located the Girdle of Nitocris at the ibn Tulun Mosque, and Dr. Khafour implied it could be used in a ritual to resurrect Queen Nitocris. Bear in mind none of this is directly related to the disappearance/murder of the Carlyle Expedition, which was what Jackson Elias was investigating (.

As of this day, you agreed to take the Girdle of Nitocris from the mosque of ibn Tulun and deliver it to Dr. Khafour at the Cairo Museum for safekeeping. Said el-Tewfik (remember him from London?) attempted to steal the girdle once before, he will likely try again. Also involved is Omar al-Shakti, leader of the local faction of the Black Brotherhood which in Cairo is naturally very rich and powerful.

One last possible lead is the local who rescued Warren Besart after a fantastic and mind-shattering experience when he was with the Carlyle expedition. He lives with his mother not far from Giza. (Besart is/was Carlyle's agent and Faraz Najir steal a couple of items from Omar al-Shakti's possession.)
