Re: Cairo II

In reply to Count Sigismund Bathony (msg # 641):

Peering through the wind-whipped waves at the foundering felluca some hundred yards or more off, Molly saw the other boat was somehow wrapped in seaweed. Seaweed? No, somehow there were dark green tentacles, like some kind of giant squid or cephalopod, and they were reaching out of the water to envelop the other boat's hull, as if trying to break it apart!

Things are getting hairy. Time for arts and crafts.

Cynthia digs into her pocket for a penny and a pen knife. While wrapping herself around the mast, she carves into it, then jams it into the boat floorboards, while chanting in her best old French.

"Count!  Look.  There are tentacles coming up over the boat towards Cynthia!  Cynthia....watch out for the tentacles!"

~Oh why did you have to go and put on that girdle Cynthia.  Have you been listening to Mungo?  You can beat this.  I know you can.  I just don't know how.~

Molly continued to pray to Bhast and the other good Gods she knew about hoping one would help.  She was sure her prayers were helping but on the other hand, she could be deluding herself.  It still gave HER some hope so she would continue.

The Count has to blink many times as a nervous tic when the tentacles are pointed out to him. Less of a surprise as it might have been many months ago he un-slings his rifle and prepares to fire.

In reply to Molly 'Mungo' Fuller (msg # 649):

The Egyptian in the smart uniform nodded as he held on.

"Yes ma'am, Nile crocodiles are quite monstrous!"

"Sir,"
he said to Bathony. "I do not recommend shooting at them at this range. We are perhaps 75 yards away. You are as likely to hit the people on the boat as the crocodiles in the water! I insist, do not shoot!"

On the boat, Cynthia had a brilliant idea. She quickly scratched a 3-armed swastika in an Egyptian Piastre coin she had on her. Placing it on the deck she stood on it and began chanting the words she learned from the Book of Eibon, an incantation called "Eibon's Wheel of Mist." Sure enough, a column of bluish mist began collecting around her. Slowly at first, it began to swirl, faster and faster. But it would take time to form...

Further East in the streets of Cairo, the Egyptian Army officer repeated his request for passports and documents to Perkins, "as well, sir, you must accompany us to the police station so we may take your statements."

"I am sorry to hear that you do not possess your papers. I note you and your companions are travelling in a car with a plate of armour welded to the back. As well, you are armed with a Lewis gun. I might have let this go, but I think I must insist you accompany us to the police station."

He motioned for an NCO and a couple policemen to come over.

Keeper's Note: Yeah, Fast Talk might have worked!

Re: Cairo II

As the fog begins to swirl, Cynthia isn't so much hiding as scrabbling to hold onto the boat, as well as grabbing for anything else that may be used as a weapon around her--boat hooks, bits of wood, maybe a dropped gun. The boat doesn't offer a good deal of cover, so if she's going to be a monster snack, she'd prefer to at least be difficult to swallow.

"Should we not see your commanding officer at the fort given that it was military personnel involved ? I don't believe that the local constables would have jurisdiction in this military matter. As for the car it is one we loaned from the airport and I would say these modifications were probably made during the war when it was used for garrison duties. We also of course have the required papers for the Lewis gun as it is used for our mail run duties."

Re: Cairo II

In reply to Cynthia Jane Holloway (msg # 653):

Slowly, the blue mist formed. Too slowly!

A desperate Cynthia's hand grasped a boat hook as the closest tentacle groped towards her. Suddenly it shot forward, wrapping around her left ankle! Cold, slimy, wet,+ it started to slither up her leg, seeking the girdle! The others aboard the Felluca, Alexander and two more crew, were too busy trying to keep the boat afloat and not get thrown into the angry waters.

Over on the yacht, the tentacles became clearer to Molly and the Count as they drew closer. Water splashed up and the wind howled as they slowly made their way towards the stricken felluca. The yacht crew seemed unaware that tentacles were reaching out of the water into the felluca.

Keeper's Note: Bathony's chance to hit with his rifle is halved due to the bobbing boat and relatively small target. But both he and Molly must now make SAN checks.

The Count took the sailors directions under advisement as he again looked across the sights of his weapon and tried to spy a relatively large target to fire at that had not made it onto the boat. He fires a burst of five rounds and stitches the length of one of the tentacles.

Cynthia skitters backwards back up the deck of the sinking boat as far as she can away from the tentacle. Grasping the boat hook in one hand, she swings it at the tentacle, trying to pin it to the boat deck.

JM was not a sailor, quite the opposite and he'd stayed as clear of the water as possible, holding on to the mast for support while his face was a bit green.  As a result he was not thrown overboard but was flung hard to the deck with stars filling his vision.  When he came to the felluca was nearly awash and swarming with horrible tentacles.  Immediately he knew that they had come for Cynthia or more specifically the girdle.

Despite his queasiness and discomfort on the water, JM was a man of action.  He couldn't help wrestle the boat to shore but he could help his comrade.  Looking about he drew his pistol and strode across the deck.  Then at point blank range he fired several feet away from Cynthia into the tentacle attacking her.

Re: Cairo II

In the Cairo boulevard a couple miles east of the Nile it looked like a standoff was developing. The Egyptian Army captain wanted to see papers, Perkins did not want to show them. An NCO came up to the captain and whispered something in his ear, then showed him a note. The Captain read the note and scowled as he twisted his impressive-looking moustache.

He snapped at Perkins, "It seems I am to let you go free, sir. Please accept my apologies and enjoy your evening. And do try to stay out of trouble, yes?"

On the Nile, Cynthia was in great distress. The cold, slimy tentacle reached under her clothing. She could feel it slithering up her leg, then to her waist. It started to tug at the Girdle where it was fastened around her torso for safekeeping. She realised it was trying to remove the ancient chain! JM observed this, his mind reeling, and came to the same conclusion. The tentacles (of which this was only one) were looking for the girdle! The other crew were unmolested where they clung to resist being thrown over in the unnatural wind and waves that buffeted the Felluca. Pulling out his Webley he fired a shot, trying to retain his footing on the pitching deck. The shot went wide.

There was a crack from several dozens of yards away and a bullet smashed into the tentacle clutching Cynthia, a few feet from her. It was partially severed and relaxed, letting her go free. Beneath and around here a column of blue mist continued to form, about halfway there.

On the steam-yacht, the officer was aghast at Bathony. "You! Stop shooting at the felluca! Have you gone mad?" He hadn't seen the tentacles or didn't realise they were the real threat, and was expecting him to shoot at crocodiles in the water. Indeed, to him it looked like Bathony was shooting directly at the boat!

Another sailor clutched at Molly, handed her a mug of tea while gaping at Bathony's apparent lunacy,.

Re: Cairo II

Molly took a sip of tea.  TEA?  In this madhouse?  Oh great Gods and Goddess' is this what the world is coming to?  Would more tentacles appear?  Were there more than one Octopus there?  Can you call such a monster an Octopus?  If there were more than one should she use the Greek form and call them octopodes? Should she, in light of her recent experience with cats call the plural octopuses?  With all these thoughts running through Molly's head, even Mungo felt like slapping her.  Instead Molly just clung to the sailor who was clinging to her not even noticing if he was cute or not.  Times were indeed dire.  Mungo automatically added to Molly's musings, "Stay tuned for further the further blabberings of Molly's and Mungo's Musings.  Will Cynthia survive?  Will Molly say "I told you it was a bad idea".  Will somebody miss the tentacle and hit Cynthia?  Would Cynthia be able to get the blood off with sea water?  Would Neris/Bast/Bastet hear Molly's pleads to help?  Mungo, as well as Molly, would have to wait and see.

Molly sighed as she clung to the sailor.  She wasn't sure he would be of help but he had brought tea and that was comforting?  Molly took another sip of tea before going back to prayers to all the good Gods and Goddess that she knew of, particularly of Bast/Bastet and hoped that she was one of the deities that understood English.
