Re: Cairo II
In the Cairo boulevard a couple miles east of the Nile it looked like a standoff was developing. The Egyptian Army captain wanted to see papers, Perkins did not want to show them. An NCO came up to the captain and whispered something in his ear, then showed him a note. The Captain read the note and scowled as he twisted his impressive-looking moustache.
He snapped at Perkins, "It seems I am to let you go free, sir. Please accept my apologies and enjoy your evening. And do try to stay out of trouble, yes?"
On the Nile, Cynthia was in great distress. The cold, slimy tentacle reached under her clothing. She could feel it slithering up her leg, then to her waist. It started to tug at the Girdle where it was fastened around her torso for safekeeping. She realised it was trying to remove the ancient chain! JM observed this, his mind reeling, and came to the same conclusion. The tentacles (of which this was only one) were looking for the girdle! The other crew were unmolested where they clung to resist being thrown over in the unnatural wind and waves that buffeted the Felluca. Pulling out his Webley he fired a shot, trying to retain his footing on the pitching deck. The shot went wide.
There was a crack from several dozens of yards away and a bullet smashed into the tentacle clutching Cynthia, a few feet from her. It was partially severed and relaxed, letting her go free. Beneath and around here a column of blue mist continued to form, about halfway there.
On the steam-yacht, the officer was aghast at Bathony. "You! Stop shooting at the felluca! Have you gone mad?" He hadn't seen the tentacles or didn't realise they were the real threat, and was expecting him to shoot at crocodiles in the water. Indeed, to him it looked like Bathony was shooting directly at the boat!
Another sailor clutched at Molly, handed her a mug of tea while gaping at Bathony's apparent lunacy,.
