Re: Character Rolls and Experience Checks

Group,

Cynthia: make a Credit Check roll to see if she has contacts that could know the BP club a bit better.

Singh/Darlington: Experience checks for Spot Hidden. (No rolls for now.)

Roll Result:

For a "Hail Mary" like this a success is good for a little information. She doesn't know anyone who would have "deep" knowledge of the club. She does know a certain barrister named David "Smitty" Smythe who might have visited there once or twice. Post what you want her to ask specifically; you can narrate as you like. I will be happy to narrate the call but I'm not going to get into a detailed exchange, if you know what I mean.

Huh, for some reason I missed this. I try to work it myself, no harm in asking! I don't think a check is appropriate under the circumstances. Locksmith/Lockpick is certainly an underrated skill!

Group,

1) It occurs to me that these rolls are unneeded except when encountering turbulence.

2) You don't need to make rolls, no one should be getting sick. Please disregard. An interesting idea but not really likely on this short hop!

3) The pilots will probably never need to make these rolls.

If anyone could claim that "benefit" it would be Imran! JM might well have seen some gruesome deaths but nothing like trench warfare in Flanders or the Somme.

Bear in mind that soldiers (and pilots) who become accustomed to combat stress in order to survive often still suffer mental trauma that takes a lifetime to resolve. It may even take years to express. It's a complicated subject, one we're still only beginning to understand.

In Call of Cthulhu, "Getting Used to Awfulness" is when you lose the maximum SAN for a given situation or monster, you won't lose any more for a "reasonable period" (defined as an hour, day, or week). This hardening therefore does wear off over time without further exposure.

In my opinion a soldier who loses the maximum SAN for combat is indeed "hardened" to war... as long as the war lasts. Years after, viewing a corpse, they could (say) witness a gruesome death and then suffer flashbacks or become emotionally overwhelmed.

Anyways, cheer up. JM lost 4 SAN, not enough to push him to the edge but not over.

Oh I wasn't complaining.  I totally agree that JM's experience with death would be far less 'personal' that a veteran of the trenches in France and the Low Countries.

So how does the loss of SAN work?  What is typically the max loss?

Re: Character Rolls and Experience Checks

In reply to John-Marc Falcon (msg # 55):

The max SAN loss depends on the event. For viewing a mangled corpse, it's 0/1D4+1, or 5 SAN max. Viewing a friend die a messy death is 0/1d6 SAN (6 SAN max). (0 SAN is lost for passing these SAN checks, although some events are so horrible even passing the SAN check costs a minimum SAN loss.) So 1 more point of current SAN lost due to this means he no longer takes SAN checks for a while as he's become used to it.

A loss of 5 SAN at once is enough to trigger temporary insanity. A loss of 1/5th of current SAN in one game hour triggers indefinite insanity. If current SAN goes to 0 you become permanently insane. Of course, it's a little more complicated but this is the gist.

My recollection is Molly was given the double-barrel. .20 gauge? A pump-gun can fire once per turn.

Initiative is "fascist" (in my friend's opinion). It goes by DEX rank. (It can get a little complicated if there are melee and guns going off, which there well could be.)

The group has obviously achieved tactical surprise (they don't expect you to come from inside the manor) but they are not completely unaware so you can at least get your first shots off.

Most unintentionally hilarious rule text:

"But plotted scenarios rarely call for running gun battles. Beware of gunfights, they're signs that the investigators have made bad choices."

Have the writers actually played Call of Cthulhu? Masks contains several practically unavoidable set-piece battles. Adventures where talking, stealth (or reading a spell book) to win the day are pretty rare, but are not the rule. No doubt this is due to what players really wanted, and adventure writers need to pay attention to their audience!

Yes, I noticed that when I was flipping through the book and had a good chuckle.

Do you need us to post our DEX scores for easy sorting?

Yes, I believe the second shotgun was 20 gauge, double barreled, originally loaded with shot (but Molly may have changed that), with the one Cynthia is carrying being the 12 gauge pump, loaded with slugs. I wrote down what the barrel lengths are, but it seems not to matter as far as the rules are concerned.

Adding DEX in your posts can't hurt, I can always look myself!

If the Count is using an automatic weapon, he gets a +5% to hit per bullet if aiming at a single target, up to doubling his chance. If spreading the fire, 1 roll to hit per target (no bonus) and shooter allots bullets per target.

What is the MP? "Moving People"?

The rules are a little vague on how many bursts can be fired in a turn, though it does say "may fire a burst... on the shooter's DEX rank". I don't believe you can fire multiple bursts in a turn (or rather, you are probably actually firing several bursts as such but in effect resolving them all at the same time).

I'd say the 2 groups (6 charging cultists and the 2 attacking the sacrifices) are too far apart to engage in the same turn.

1) Choose which group of targets are being engaged.
2) Allocate bullets per target, preferably per die type (4, 6, 8, 10, 12, 20). For example if it's at the six rushers, you make 6 attack rolls with no bonus.
3) For all the successful attacks roll the appropriate die type and roll for damage. (Probably 2D6 for the Arisaka 6.5mm round.)

He made his 1 attack roll (aiming at a single target), I believe that 1 bullet hit (the d4) and 6HP damage was done.

With bursts you either get 1 roll on a single target (hosing 'em down) with bonuses, or you can spray fire at several targets in a group but still with only 1 roll each target but no bonuses. Each target has X bullets assigned to it and if the roll is a hit then you would roll 1d4, 1d6, 1d8, etc.

Even with short range and scores are double Molly didn't hit what she wanted to.  But is that really true?  It's a shortgun so wouldn't it scatter?  Perhaps not enough to REALLY injure but perhaps enough to slow down?  Yes this is the reporter who could probably only hit the broad side of the barn but is trying to convince the Keeper that perhaps a miss is as good as a hit in some situations.  Only for our side of course.  :)

In reply to Molly 'Mungo' Fuller (msg # 119):

The shot is scattering, it's just not as wide a scatter as people generally think (and game rules would typically lead you to believe.) That is, at 30m (the range where Cynthia engaged her target this turn) the shot would spread to a cloud of pellets with a "danger zone" 50cm across. I assume Cynthia is using a full choke as she's not shooting birds or skeet here! Some pellets might strike adjacent targets if they were closely packed (like, shoulder-to-shoulder) but the damage would be minimal, maybe 1-2 HP. The CoC rules do reflect this accurately enough, shotguns are a little more accurate but damage drops off over range and there are no adjacent hits.

(Also note that when Cynthia hit she didn't blow a huge chunk out of her target. Pellets did strike the chest and face but they are small, so they make small holes with no cinematic spray of gore. Closer in at PB range, it should look more impressive!)

100%? Perfect score! Uh-oh, a roll of 100 is a jam for a pump-gun.

Cynthia loses 2 SAN, so she's shaken but still functional. How you RP this is up to you!

My apologies, I should have had Molly roll as well (witnessing the violent death of a friend certainly qualifies as a 0/1D6 SAN check) so I'll just do that now... failed, lose 3 SAN! (No need to further RP this.)

(0/1D6 means if you pass, you lose 0 SAN, fail means lose 1D6. Losing 5 or more SAN triggers insanity unless you FAIL an INT check and thus suppress the memory. The biggeswt SAN losses are 1D6/1D20, 1D10/1D100 for seeing Great Old Ones, Gods, etc, etc.)

Thanks and no worries, I just wanted to know before I did it so you wouldn't be nailed twice.

There's no real preference, but I guess either you players or I should do it so I don't get confused. So, let's say players adjust their own SAN. (This is the traditional method for CoC, after all!)

I'll also try to remind players at the time so we're all on the same page.

Hey, this kind of "roll playing" is how we rolled back in the old days. (I refuse to say "back in the day", I mean, which day in particular?) If you were there, you know what I mean! (I also forgot to give the information she gleaned from her earlier EDU roll but this allowed me to roll that trivia in nicely.)

I recall a CoC war story where a blown Luck roll caused the end of the world. Screw all that emoting, story arcs and character-centric storytelling! The author of the d20 Monkey web comic (d20monkey.com) really does enjoy D&D 4th ed. but misses the days when suddenly the shit (as the kids say) got real, you rolled them bones and hoped for the best. Nowadays, and I'm not sayin' nothin' about nothin', if you actually dare gack a PC it's a coin flip if the player will walk or not.

1) As a matter of fact, it is an Impale (2x damage).

2) Further, the beasts are at Point Blank range (DEX in feet) so skill is doubled.

3) Pump shotguns have 1 shot/turn, so 1 of Cynthia's shots hit. I can't find mention of a 10 gauge pump shotgun that far back, so I guess it's 12 gauge?

4) Designate your target! There are 2 of them: one eating Perkins while there's another having a go at Bathony. I assume the fire is at the latter, as shooting at the former requires leaving the safety of the house.

5) These critters are big! Add 10 percentiles to your skill to hit. (If these bonuses mean you might have hit in the past, just chalk it up to nerves and keep it in mind going forward.)

Sorry on the firing extra shots.

Yes, the pump is 12-gauge, while the other gun Molly has is 20.

And yes, aiming at the creature I can hit without leaving the house. While we may have to leave the house to fight later, I'd rather there only be one outside when we do it.

My reading of the rules is that doubling the charge adds half again the damage done. (No word on 6x a base charge.) One grenade does 4D6, for 10 damage. That's bumped up to 15 for 2 grenades, then another half for doubling that (for 4 grenades) is 18 damage total.

Cynthia lost 1 point and is shaken but still in control of her faculties.

I will subtract these points from your character sheets (so no need to bother).

In theory I should be prompting you to make checks. In practice, I'm not going to double-check you.

You need to roll over your current level (so the better you are, the more difficult it is) and if you make it, you add 1D10 percentiles to the skill. Your SAN goes up if your skill is raised about 90%.

Now I appreciate having a separate character rolls thread!!

The only skills listed of me succeeding at are:
Credit Rating
Shotgun
Listen

(I seem to recall I can only boost skills that I tried to use and SUCCEEDED at. If that's not the case, please tell me!)

edit: Also forgot the old game. We probably need to port the Reading list from that game over. However, it looks like I failed all of my rolls over there as well.

Is there any way to increase a skill while not in combat? I'd like to start working on lock picking, since it comes up so frequently, as well as perhaps Hide and Sneak, so as to be able to apply lock picking.

I will have to check regarding training and non-adventure (IE down-time) skill improvement. It usually goes you can't improve a skill unless there is stress or whatever on the line, but I think you should be able to practice at least some time!

(Maybe something like you can make one or two skill rolls per month during down time to practice something, or maybe learn from someone else.

Considering how crazy what Bathony just said sounded, I decided a Fast Talk check from him was in order. That failed, but the priest's Idea check succeeded enough that it's clear to him something odd is happening! Don't forget to put a skill check for Fist/Punch. Don't forget that, in combat, you have a Dodge or Parry (as to they).

It's a new combat round. Perkins and the thug have the same DEX rank and are doing the same thing (drawing a weapon). Roll percentile to see who goes first (lowest wins).

Nice! Almost ran the table, except for Cthulhu Mythos. (I wonder if it goes up like other skills when you succeed? If so, it would still cost SAN.) Her CM is actually 12%, as she's read Africa's Dark Sects.

She really is a very useful sort, and perhaps research will give you the edge you need. While in theory reading and general research should be a big part of Mythos investigations it tends to be overlooked in published materials (except for specific "silver bullet" spells) and completely ignored by players.

I guess there's the Keeper prejudice against handing out useful information. It goes against the typical CoC "must confuse/kill the players!" ethos. Players have a traditional fear or prejudice against reading Mythos tomes. As the joke goes, "burn all books!". Of course, the Keeper would never just hand you anything useful/interesting.

Cynthia Jane Holloway rolled 36 using 1d100 with rolls of 36. archeology?

Missed by 5. I don't know if my American gumption gets me a bonus though.

I didn't see a Feel skill on the sheet. I assume someone just forgot to put that on the original template. But I rolled really well:
07:17, Fri 03 Apr 2015: Cynthia Jane Holloway rolled 19 using 1d100 ((19)).

I feel so bad for saying this but making a Molotov cocktail probably wouldn't even occur to her. The first documented use of this type of "petrol bomb" doesn't even occur until the Spanish Civil War in 1936. Now, it's certainly possible that someone at an earlier point in time in the heat of the moment with the right materials in front of them could figure something like this out. But I figured at least a successful Luck roll (and then an Idea roll) was necessary and there it is.

Now we know why it's called a "Molotov Cocktail" and not a "Cynthia's Long Island Flaming Ice Tea of Death" or (from my wife) a "Holloway Howitzer" or an "In-Cindy-ary" device.

Also, no other weapons.

Cynthia: I assume if one of the shapes cuts Matt in half because he's going for the Lewis gun, she still holds her fire? After all, it's not Him who's acting. Asking for a friend.

This was a serious Sanity check. You take 1D10 SAN loss for merely passing that check. A fail is 1D100 loss so there was a significant chance of permanent insanity.

Oh dang. That's a lot of sanity. My character sheet only has 1d100 sanity as it is already!

Mildly tweaked post. I'm not sure if there's a crazy-guide on what characters should be doing while crazy? If not, I'll just assume some level of temporal displacement until Cynthia gets a chance to rest up.

BTW, rolled my Sanity loss: 08:40, Today: Cynthia Jane Holloway rolled 3 using 1d10 ((3)).

Very okay with that.
