Like in FF7, the planet Earth is semi-sentient.  Has a self-defense mechanism.  Bends fate to bring together champions to fend off major threats.

The ring of fire is the beginnings of a stargate that leads to a magma world.  The planet spins really fast.  1 rotation a second or so.  The people who live there are made of a tar-like substance like the villain from Once Upon a Forest.  Impervious to heat and really tough.  Their world is already dead, yet they survive as extremophiles.  Worship death and destruction.  Accidentally open a gate to the Earth while trying to find something Nihilistic.  Now want to introduce Earth to the joys of entropy.

The group first hears about their destiny in a horoscope

Maybe make Quantum Quazar the mystic who gets the group on the main story quest.
