Elliot has retrieved his weapon from Andy and policed up all his belongings. With the dead body strapped to the back of the 311, he and Andy have the vehicle properly faced and ready to join the convoy.

Re: Fade Away and Radiate

The small convoy started out.

Maryville was alerted they had a casualty aboard and a medical team would be standing by when they arrived.

The convoy travelled for a few hours along the Open Road, really just a path through the great Pacific Northwestern forest wide enough to admit heavy vehicles. While the forest was thick and daunting, hiding who-knew-what, the trip south from Bellingham to Maryville was uneventful.

They could make about 30 km/h along the route; it was about midnight when they rolled into the well-lit Project outpost compound. The gate guards waved them through the checkpoint, which was set up modern style where barriers assured that vehicles must approach single file and slalom back and forth some so that they couldn't pick up speed. Spotlights on the towers and a 2-person security team in Project coveralls patrolled the double fence line with a dog completed the picture of a well-organised and safe outpost.

"This is more like I expected when I awoke.. it's all been fairly organized.  Just the time lost, you know?"  Jimmy talks softly to those in the back of the Ranger if they care to hear.  "But glad we are here now, doing what we can."

Once they were parked up Tim stepped down from the gun ring and exited the APC. He looked around the compound commenting. "So this is what the future looks like.". Taking a swig from his canteen as he tried to equalize his fluids intake to compensate for the dried out feel he had about him, probably a side effect from the "sleep" he thought.

Capt'n Kim waves at the guards and will head first to where his equipment is stored. Looks over his uniform and changes. He had a close encounter with a "Metal Head" with his AKSU.

Hearing a briefing coming at 0600...Heads to to the armoury and humbly admits to the people "Yes you were right.... AKSU and 3 mags not enough. Issue HP35 and 3 mags, 2 M26a1, 2 CS and 2 Thermite please. M23 carbine and 6 mags too please. So sorry I not listen to you earlier... almost REALLY sorry."

Then

Grabs a cup of coffee and heads to the infirmary to check on Bert.  Sleeps if he can.

The Ranger pulled up on a concrete apron outside the clinic entrance. Most of the compound's two lots were gravel but this surface needed to be smoother due to the gurneys that were used to transport injured.

Getting out of the tow truck, Daniel replied, "welcome to my home. This outpost is based on my family's truck stop." He opened the roll doors to the vehicle repair shop, backed the Scout in and secured it to the lift. Its repairs could wait until morning.

"Ok everyone, we got a briefing at 0600. Please be up and ready to go by then!

"Tim, your team will stay in the barracks. Dylan can show you where that is."

Re: Fade Away and Radiate

An orderly helped Filat, wounded in the leg, out of the Scout and into the clinic.

This was the first the new team had seen of him. He was armed with an M21 rifle. He was wearing Project coveralls, over top of that was a 4-cell chest ammo rig. Underneath was a white shirt with cornflower blue stripes. On his head was a blue beret. "Am happy to have met you. Do not think will be going on operation. Is shame. Will be seeing you later, am thinking!"

Although El and Andy already knew that many people in the Puget Sound were descended from Soviet invaders during WWIII this would probably be very surprising to the new arrivals. Although Filat's accent and unconventional dress choices suggested this.

After parking the XR-311 Elliot checks the 'load.' "Glad to let the clinic workers handle the body bag," he says to Andy and the others.

These areas of the base are lit and bright. As he hefts his backpack onto his shoulders the team can see that Elliot sports SCIENCE Team insignia on his uniform. He takes a moment to offer well-wishes to Filat before the man disappears into the clinic.

"Sounds like I'm following Dylan, too," Elliot comments. "I need to get this ravine mud off me and grab some sleep."

Jimmy dismounts and approaches Filat, a hand open for a clasp, a big grin on his face.  He opens with surprisingly good Russian.

"Baba s vozu — kobyle legche."  And he laughs, Russian humor being what it is.  (Translation: It is easier for the mare when a woman is off the cart., IE:If you want to sneak away from doing this hard part of the job, go ahead, you will only make it simpler for me).  Then more seriously he flips out another Russian proverb (in Russian still)"Rest well, friend.  It has been flowers I would bet, and the berries will come soon.  Will need you then."

"Jimmy MacGuire, nice to meet you, and good to hear Russian."

Andy unloads his gear from the 311, looking hopeful as the Ranger's patient is unloaded then nodding grimly as some fellow project members arrive to collect the corpse.  Smiling at Elliot, "Yeah, you do smell a bit swampy.  I'll check with Blackfeather on sleeping arrangements.  I'll catch up."

Slinging his gears over his shoulder, he cradles his sniper rifle as he walks up the Daniel Blackfeather, "Elliot and I are fresh in today from evacuation duty.  You want us to bunk up with the newbies?"

Filat laughed as he limped along. "You mean, "when a woman gets off the cart, the mare will notice." Among my people, women do much of the work, they are equal. As they must be in this world. Unless in this saying, you are the woman, and I am the cart? Or the mare? Either way, I won't be of much use.

In reply to Elliot Charles Pendergrass (msg # 607):

Two slightly tired looking clinic workers wheeled a gurney to the XR311. Carefully they loaded the body bag onto the wheeled stretcher and then started back towards the clinic.

The barracks were clean, with a kitchen, showers, and a large bunk hall for men and women. It was currently empty, as most extra personnel had been pulled down south to assist in evacuation duty. Bunks were plentiful, with wool blankets and down pillows. Electric heaters kept the chill out and flourescent lights kept the darkness at bay.

Andy stows his gear at an empty bunk, making sure that everything is clean and ready.

He looks for the showers, and cleans himself up after the long day.  Falling into his bunk he sleeps soundly until he is awakened.

"Be well.. I think I might be able to sleep a bit.  It's as if I haven't slept in Centuries."

Jimmy waves good bye to the wounded Russian and heads for their barracks to clean up and take in some shut eye.  He thought with all the excitement of waking in a new world of sorts, and worry for his niece that he had not heard from, and all, that he would have trouble getting to sleep.  He had no trouble.

Tim follows the others into the barracks once the vehicles are squared away for the moment. "Looks to be food and drink if anyone would like to take part." Once he had his gear on top of a bunk he would go in search of a coffee if he was not needed for anything else.

Re: Fade Away and Radiate

There were lockers at the foot of the bunks and along the walls for gear. Weapons could be stored in the armoury but the barracks also had smaller arms lockers.

PD Note: I originally thought that quarters would be co-ed but then upon reflection decided the MP personnel who built them still had somewhat socially conservative mores. Not enough to prevent Project personnel of both sexes serving equally on teams but heaven's forbid both would share the same bunkrooms and showers!
