Robert 'Bobby' Michael Kastelein:
In reply to Alice Maura McCloud (msg # 42):

"No problem. I'm backup driver, I'll ground-guide you out."

Slinging his Stoner, Bobby started up the ramp.

Alice smiles her face lighting up. "Thank you Bobby I would appreciate that."
Climbs into the drivers seat. "All aboard that want to leave" she sings out. And waits while people either get on board or decide to walk.
Then starts to drive out following Bobby's hand signals

Re: Fade Away and Radiate

Jimmy winks at Tina, looking a little mischievous.

"After all the explosions and the.. sounds.. of the bolthole opening up, I don't suppose they can complain about a little mouth harp music now, you think?"

Jimmy pulled a harmonica out of his pocket, then waggled a brow at the ladies.

"Any requests?  I was thinking.. Yankee Doodle."

Smiling, Tina replied, with perhaps a touch of sarcasm, "I guess you won't know until after if it was a good idea, right? But if Tim agrees then how about some "Dixie"?"

Jimmy snorts.  "Fair enough."

"Carson to Limey.  How about a song to emerge into this world?  Kit proposed Dixie.  Can broadcast or simply remain on air.  Can ground guide while playing."

In reply to Alice Maura McCloud (msg # 47):

"I think I'm going to walk, Alice.  I have a feeling that we will be in that tin can for a while.", Lina answered.

While she waited for the Ranger to pullout, Lina disconnected the bolthole antenna cable from the PRC-70 screwed on the whip. Then she recovered the antenna cable and rolled it up.

"I don't know this 'Dixie' but if you hum a few bars I can fake it.  She nodded towards the big doors.  "Those won't sit.  Someone will salvage them.  Too much metal not to.  The trail still exists because someone was coming back in here.  Looks like they were stripping old houses and an electrical junction I passed on the way in.  It would be best if Project folks came and reclaimed this stuff.  Heavily armed Project people.  Folks here 'bouts would kill each other for the wealth in that hole."

She thought about what she had just said and looked sadly at the other scouts."You guys have been asleep for a long time.  Quite a few folks, my own people for one, make a living digging through what your people left behind.  What you would call a land fill is like gold to us.  Hell, we've even found bottles of water and edible canned goods in dumps.  Books and papers that are still readable.  Metal and electronic parts galore.  We just have to look out for old household chemicals and other toxic substances."

"Sorry Mahalina we all leave mounted up in case we need to move at speed once we are out. There will be time once we park up to get some air."

Tim clicks the PT switch on his radio.
"Carson, Limey. Perhaps once we are mounted up and moving. We are egressing now how is the perimeter secure ?, over."

Tim waited as the Ranger was started and they began moving.

"Limey, we just have a big party of friendlies waiting on you to arrive.  I would take it slow and make a good entrance though.  Copy, no music on the radio.  Carson out."

He winks at Jenna this time, grins slightly and waggles a harmonica.

"Just a little.. eh?

He gently starts playing "Dixie" on the harmonica, low and slow... then from it does a little "Yankee Doodle".

Jenna heard the radio squawk, blushed, and put her helmet back on.  She drew the shottie up across her chest in a "half ready" position.

"So, Kit and Carson, how do you want to do this perimeter?  I can go back to the ATV and face towards the woods.  I'll be in place to meet the others as they come out in the clearing."

Sighing in a good-natured way, Tina stepped over to Jimmy and lightly cuffed the back of his head. "C'mon ya'all, Jimmy's right. If someone is around they know we're here. Jenna, please keep an eye to the west, where your folks are comin' from, and the woods to the south. Jimmy, keep an eye on the trail north and east towards the lake. I'll keep watch into the forest west, northwest and north."

She transmitted, "Limey from Kit. Roger that, be advised we are maintaining a visual on both directions of the trail and into the woods."

"If Jenna is at the corner of where Lake Louise used to be a T-junction with Lake Whatcom, she can cover west and south. But there ain't no trail goin' south anymore, it's all forest."

The cleared trail (well, once-cleared trail) came from the west along Lake Louise Dr., then turned north along the path of Lake Whatcom Blvd. Lake Whatcom Bloulevad south of the intersection was long gone. If there was a roadbed it was probably only something an archaeologist could find!

"For me, I'll kind of watch the northwest arc. I have a feeling if this trail was going north that's where someone might come from anyways."

She moved off towards the bolthole exit in a NW direction.

Re: Fade Away and Radiate

Within a few minutes, Jenna saw the familiar sight of Windigo rumble into sight, forging through the nakes branches of the leafless bushes. Behind it was the Commando Scout.

A little ways away, Jimmy glimpsed the arrival of the other Project vehicles they were supposed to meet, but trees blocked most of his view.

Alice started to drive the Ranger up the exit ramp.

Re: Fade Away and Radiate

The Ranger emerged from the ramp and out the main vehicle exit. Alice expertly maneuvered it out and over the craters, then around the fallen tree trunks.

Even though it was dim under the trees, and overcast, the light hurt her eyes. That of Lina as well, who was sitting in the passenger/RTO seat. SOP would be to halt once the Ranger was clear to deploy the gunshield and mount the MAG-58.

There was forest all around them, save for a ragged hole in the tree cover above the exit. This was because a half dozen trees had been removed by one means or another (blowing them up, knocking them over) to allow for the opening of the exit doors and the Ranger's egress. Rain began to patter down on the Ranger's armour plated roof and upper hatch.
