Everybody Wants to Rule the World

They were woken before dawn.

It was another miserable day. Black clouds hid the stars and would hide the dawn twilight. The undermanned outpost slowly came awake. Inside, the various new arrivals found they had the mess hall to themselves aside from a sleepy cook, a local Amerindian contractor. Breakfast was hearty: eggs, ham, bacon, various breads and mounds of hash browns. instant coffee and juice from concentrate.

Briefing was at 0600 in the meeting room down the hall.

PD Note: All the active PCs can and should post here.

Everybody Wants to Rule the World

In reply to Project Director (msg # 1):

Capt'n Kim's inner alarm wakes him. Ah... the live of a fisherman.  Kim rubs his eyes, ruffles his hair and gets up to check on Bert before heading to the Mess hall.

"Is the patient ok?" Capt'n Kim asks the medical person.

(Will frown or grin at the response.)

"Thank you" he'll add before leaving. Hefting the Stoner carbine he walks towards the smell of food outside. "Ah BACON... I hate bacon. At least there will be lots of hash browns" And scowls at the weather to strengthen his mood.

Arriving at the Mess hall he nods at all that are there, and grabs his coffee and a heaping mound of hash browns. Fours slices of the crispiest bacon are put on his plate as well. Which will be promptly broken up up into bits and mixed with the hash browns.

Capt'n Kim scans the room and awaits the briefing.

The patient is long out of surgery and resting. The nurse on duty confirmed that he was going to pull through. He also said there was a note that a messenger would be sent as soon as possible to inform his family where he was located.

In the briefing room before the meeting starts Elliot gets an update on Bert's condition from Captain Kim. "He seemed a little bit young to be off and on his own. Certainly too green to be in a firefight with Project personnel," Elliot added. "I saw the damage done to the vehicle by their improvised bomb. If something like that were to be tossed on top of a soft-sided vehicle, we could lose people."

Andy rolls out of bed, taking a deep breath and stretching.

"Man!  A soft bed and a warm blanket.  I almost feel normal." He smiles at the others as he cleans himself up and checks his gear.  Looking at the clock, his attention lingers at the dark view outside.

He grumbles to no one in particular, "Cold and wet.  This place would do well with some good 'ol Oklahoma sunshine."

Andy follows Kim out of the barracks.  Seeing him head over to the medical building, he pauses, getting a bit damp while waiting for him to come back out.  Getting an update on their prisoner, he enters the mess and sniffs deeply.  "How can anyone hate bacon?  It's no smoked brisket but I'm not complaining."

After eating, Andy cleans up after himself and heads off to the meeting room.  Elliot's comment on the bomb cause him to raise an eyebrow.  "Yea buddy.  We're going to have to keep them folk at a distance."

Re: Everybody Wants to Rule the World

Jimmy arrives at breakfast looking refreshed, happy and well adjusted.  Appearances can be deceiving.

He grins at the cook and asks him conversationally what tribe he is from, about what language he speaks, and gladly accepts eggs on top of his hash browns with ham AND bacon.  He seems genuinely interested in the cook's heritage, but won't push it.

He takes a seat, near others but leaving room for his team to assemble with him.

"Mighty fine breakfast we have here.  I feel as if I haven't had a decent.. hell.. any breakfast in.. gosh, must be centuries!"

A look back to the cook, and a big smile.

"Glad it is this one, thank you!"

Understand that's 50 to 60 newborn pigs, 50 to 60 yearlings, and pigs getting fat  for slaughter. And then there is sounds of BACON MAKE'N BACON. I did say me and Father are fishermen right?.... SORRY... SORRY...rough night.  Many things on mind. Who shot the boy? Was it us?? Tell Father good news of getting away from Sisters and Brothers to help Monroe's fish. Contact Elders of village about these boat killers and donation of old boat or if new boat can be made. (7 to 12 months)"

Re: Everybody Wants to Rule the World

Lina quickly got dressed and strapped on her Browning.  She followed the team across the compound for breakfast at the mess hall.   Taking whatever was offered, she accepted graciously and found a table.

Lina sat alone, eating and contemplating the new world that unfolded before her.  THe world that she once knew was lost forever.

Finishing her meal, she disposed of the plate and fork, thanking those who had the misfortune of KP this rainy morning.

Tim had not slept well, either a side effect of the sleep or because of the events of the previous day. So he was awake at dawn and dressed as the other began to move around the barracks before heading to the mess hall.

Once he was done he stood outside and sipped on his coffee before heading towards the briefing.

Re: Everybody Wants to Rule the World

In reply to Tim Charles White (msg # 10):

Jenna woke up in her room at Maryville.  Unlike the others she was attached to the Morrow outpost and as such had regular quarters.  It was arranged like a military barracks or college dorm.  Two small bedrooms opened into a joint lounge/study area.  Another set of rooms was on the other side of a shared bathroom.  There was a kitchenette on the floor but it was mostly used to fix meals if you missed the chow hall because of a patrol or watch.

She fired up a small coffee maker while she took a shower.  After pouring a mug and topping it off with milk from a mini-fridge in the lounge, she ambled down to the chow hall.  She had never had coffee before joining The Project but had quickly developed a taste for it.  She didn't know what the Project people were going to do when the finite supply of the stuff from before the great fall ran out, but she sincerely hoped they found a current era supply.

She helped herself to a hearty breakfast in the dining hall. Judging by the amount meat the Sleepers ate, livestock in their time must have been plentiful. Current era people were used to meat as a rarity, not a staple.  The cook smiled when he saw her, and gave her mostly hash browns with smaller portions of eggs and bacon. She smiled and nodded, thanking the cook.

"Maybe some venison sausage tomorrow? Crab cakes?" she asked.

"Sausage yes, crab cakes maybe. Depends on the catch."

Jenna nodded and her smile widened. "Let's hope for a good catch," she said.

She headed to the meeting after eating, found a seat and waited for the briefing to start.

Re: Everybody Wants to Rule the World

Once everyone was settled, one of the local Project Command Group brought the briefing to order. He had a rumpled, scholarly look despite his Project fatigues.

"Good morning everyone. Sorry for the early hour. Ah, ok." He poured himself an instant coffee. "We should have greenhouses set up by next summer to grow vegetables, fruits, and yes, coffee. But we have more pressing matters and the new arrivals need to be brought up to speed, but some of you will be familiar with this information already so my apologies. First, I am Darryl Weaver, part of the local Group Command Team."

There was a map easel and pull-down screen in front of a chalkboard.

"Speaking of them, welcome to our new arrivals from Regional Recon Team P-44. The short story about the Project is there was a decapitation strike shortly after the war by a postwar faction known as the "Warriors of Krell" that took Prime out of commission for a very long time. The Phoenix Team (a kind of fail-safe backup command group) has been able to reactivate Prime and begin sending the recall codes for teams. It's a difficult process due to massive information infrastructure damage. Pretty much the entire database needs to be reconstructed from scratch. As of now we estimate most of the Project is still intact but inactive (sleeping). Teams have been activated here and there, sometimes by accident and sometimes by recall code. Regions and local Groups are slowly being brought on-line and our command structure reconstituted.

"The local Project group, Combined Group Seattle, has been successfully activated with about 50% of Project assets accounted for. That's the good news."

For the benefit of the newly activated team, Weaver sketched out the course of the Third World War. In November 1989 the Cold War seemed to be ending on an uncertain tone, with unrest in Poland and East Germany and Russia seeming unwilling to enforce the Brezhnev Doctrine.

"There was an accidental US first strike during a readiness exercise, and a Soviet second strike, despite the best efforts of President Bush (who some of you may remember as formerly Reagan's Vice President) and Premier Gorbachev (as you may recall a would-be reformer) to prevent retaliation. They failed and the Soviet response included not just wide-spread nuclear strikes but an invasion of Western Europe, the Middle East, and the USA (both Alaska and Continental) supported by chemical and biological weapons on a massive scale. The details and reasons for the latter is actually quite interesting but not important for the moment, other than this is why there seem to be so many Russians around here. For the last 150 years the local American-descended "Rebels" had been fighting a war of liberation while the "Soviets" have been trying to survive. After a lot of effort everyone seems to be getting along right now, and slavery (widespread now and practiced by the Rebels) was abolished, other hostile groups fought off. We have managed to form a city government of sorts and a regional council. These are great strides."

Locally, things seemed to be progressing positively. However, one of the reasons the US military collapsed in the Puget Sound is that soon after the war Mt. Rainier erupted and deposited several feet of ash on the entire area. It continued to erupt every decade or so, with other occasional eruptions by Mt. St. Helen's, Mt. Baker and Mt. Garibaldi up in Canada. It looked like Rainier was building up to another eruption, and soon. Indications were there will be a major eruption in less than a month. The Project and the communities in and around Seattle were now as well-prepared as possible. They were now able to devote personnel, time and resources to locating and evacuating everyone in the potentially affected area.

"This is taking up most of our time and attention. However, there are other problems brewing. Remember the Krell? They are based in the midwest but we have evidence they were sending reconnaissance parties all the way here for some reason. We know they are interested in Project facilities, teams, supply caches and seek them out to loot them. We think we may know what they are looking for."

Two days ago a fishing boat belonging to a family of Whale Worshippers (aka "Fishers") stopped by to trade in Maryville. They said that something they called the "Cave of the War Whale" had been found. A shrine had been established and that the next major whaling party would be stopping there to ask for good luck at the next full moon before they began their hunt. The site was a small offshore island near the prewar town of La Push on the Pacific side of the Olympic Peninsula.

"Fragmentary prewar records indicate that a network of top secret sub pens were built in the mid-80's throughout the Pacific to shelter and rearm surviving Trident ballistic missile submarines of the Pacific Fleet in the likelihood that SWFPAC at Bangor was hit during a nuclear war. It's not known how many of these fallback shelters were built or where. Satellite imagery of the site has been hampered by bad weather and technical issues.

"It goes without saying if this is some kind of beached nuclear ballistic submarine, like an Ohio-class, or even a Los Angeles attack submarine, it could be very dangerous. Radiation hazards, toxic chemicals, you name it. We were unable to test anyone who actually visited the shrine so we couldn't take radiation readings. Dozens or more lives are at risk here.

"We would prefer to wait until better weather in the spring and the Rainier situation is resolved to have a closer look, but the next full moon is in 15 days. Despite the fact we are stretched very thin we are sending you as a composite team to investigate. Fortunately the Whale Worshippers are intelligent folk. Religiously-speaking they are Christian, in fact, but their culture and society has evolved and adapted to be centred around the sea and the whales they hunt. They will listen to reason; some of they have joined the Project. If we have proof they will listen."

He paused, reflecting on his good friend Raven, then continued.

"It should take 10 days of overland travel by vehicle to reach the former site of La Push. Conduct a preliminary investigation, then report your findings via radio. We'll take it from there."

Jimmy raised his hand, looking thoughtful.

"Doctor Weaver, do you think there is any chance that this might be a Russian sub, based on the presence of Russians in the area?"

A wry, rather crooked smile.

"I might be of some use, if that by chance is true."

But there are a million things I want to know!" he whispers. "Seismic data... are we monitoring for gaseous emissions from the mountain- they kill more people than lava... and we really DO have a satellite in orbit! I thought it was just a b.s. rumor."

Re: Everybody Wants to Rule the World

In reply to James (Jimmy) Gerrold MacGuire (msg # 13):

Weaver thought this was a good question but shook his head. "It would be interesting if it were a Russian sub. Some very strange things went on before, during and after the War. The Soviets, that is, the ones here, have no knowledge of any such base just offshore the USA. But the Soviets did manage to construct covert facilities in and near the USA and other NATO countries in case of war. Some were just caches for KGB sleeper agents and GRU infilration teams, others were very elaborate.

"For example, the KGB established a system of covert caches code-named "PYRAMID" close by Sea-Tac. Inside was stashed a massive quantity of food, fuel, ammunition and spare parts. Plus tools and dies, ammunition presses, chemical stocks. Mostly bought on the open market and enough to supplement the logistical capability of their invasion force. It's a big part of how they managed to survive cut off from the USSR shortly after they landed.

"We can't rule out a similar covert facility. It could be a sub in a sea cave that is left high and dry as the sea level has fallen several feet. We are at the tail end of a mini-ice age, and Washington state is seismically active so the sea floor could have risen. Or just beached and abandoned, then buried over the centuries.

"Regarding Mt. Rainier, gas is a threat but the biggest threat is probably lahrs. Rainier has a snow cap and an eruption will melt that, creating fast-moving half-frozen mudslides that could reach all the way to Tacoma, wiping out everything in its path.

"There is one partially-functioning landsat in Low Earth Orbit, Morrow LANDSAT 1. There are Morrow-built commsats and powersats in Geosynchronus Orbit, but damaged in the war. Partial function is being reestablished but it's slow going.

"Take what you need. If it becomes necessary to defend the site, we will send backup. The nearest sighting of a Krell LRRP was at Snoqualmie Pass, over two hundred kilometres to the east. They were taken out last fall by a team led by our now-group leader Lee Oswald. Yours truly was there.

"The west coast of the Olympic Peninsula is really deserted, even before the War, compared to the inland waters of Puget Sounds and the Straits of Juan de Fuca. The Fishers don't travel there on a regular basis. They don't recall any settlements in the area, which is considered haunted. The only reason someone visited James Island was because they were blown off course in a storm."

A quick glance to Captain Kim and a nod as he discussed logistics and tactics... then he blinks as something hits him.

"Lee... Harvey... Oswald, I...."  His mouth works as his brain tries to engage.  Surely it was some horrible coincidence in names, right?

His mouth opens, closes, then he asks.  "Sir, I thought Lee Oswald died?"

Re: Everybody Wants to Rule the World

In reply to Captain Ly Cong Kim (msg # 18):

Darryl answered Kim first,

"Two M202 quad rocket launchers is hardly "light"! One launcher should be sufficient for your purposes, plus reloads. An additional demo charge should be easy to procure from the armoury here, we certainly have a case of M25 anti-personnel mines to spare."

He checked the map.

"If you wish to travel by water, it's just shy of 300 km. It's February so storms are a real danger!

"I believe we can retrofit your fishing boat easily enough with a fusion power cell and electric motor. As long as it's seaworthy and the screw and shaft are serviceable we can get it done near here at the Amerind community in Tulalip Bay. They have docks there, and we can run over the V-150 Engineering vehicle stationed here with one to put in. They are modular in design for this purpose. Could take a day or so to make the conversion.

"Lina? Ah, let's see. We have second and third-hand reports for route reconnaissance. There appears to be a decent road to the village at Aberdeen and good trails past that. 400km overland.

"We haven't had a report of anything strange in the area for a generation, there were stories of pirates along that part of the coast some 100 years ago that probably started or fed the rumours, nothing recent. But Fishers are superstitious, like many historical sailors, and they largely avoided making landfall on that part of the coast ever since.

"Correction, I believe there actually are a few families living in and around La Push. Maybe a dozen people, all-told. We think they are probably descended from the Quillayute tribe on the nearby prewar reservation.

"As for crossing to James Island the water is shallow but the surf around James Island is considerable. An unmodified V-150 might have problems with the waves, as they tend do with anything other than still water. We do have some modular "amphib kits" available (front trim vane, twin outboard pontoons, bilge pump and twin electric thrusters) that make the V-150 safer in at least the inland waters of the Sound but they are all in use in the Mt. Rainier evacuation. I'll have to check if there's a Zodiac on a trailer available as well, but you may need to make do with a inflatable raft."

It seemed he was avoiding Jimmy's question on Lee Harvey Oswald. Pondering the situation, he evidently changed his mind. "It's not something I am really at liberty to talk about, or that we can spend a lot of time discussing right now. It's pretty fucking mind-blowing. But yes, the person you all know of as "Lee Harvey Oswald" had his death faked by Bruce Morrow and then brought into the Project. It was part of a larger deception operation to fake the death of President Kennedy, who was really targeted for assassination, just not by the person the history books said did it. And "Lee Harvey Oswald" is not his real name, either, but he goes by it as well as the nickname "Patsy"."

Jimmy slaps his knee and laughs out loud.  "Kennedy too, huh?  Well, I won't ask about Jimmy Hoffa."

His grin fades and he slowly nods once.  "Thanks for that... and folks, there isn't an armored anything that is supposedly amphibious that is up to anything much more than a still pond, it's the way it has always been.  If we have to hit active water, we will need a Zodiac."

He chuckles to himself and shakes his head again.  "Damn, Kennedy and Oswald."

Capt'n Kim's dream of one of the project motors on his boat is coming to pass sooner than expected.  Hiding his joy on this news as best as possible  "Sir.. would this be a long term retrofit?  The Monroe family could then have their boat fitted with my Deere motor."

Kim scratches his head  "300 K by boat?  Boat would have less drag and stronger motor hmmmmm. Could make  18 knots, have gone as fast or faster on short runs with my motor. Could be their in 8...12 hours after refit. No stop.  Could have have V-150 go too, but they might run into rear or flank of these Krell.  Not a bad thing... draw off some of their numbers from us they could"

"Yes, Captain Kim, I think this would be a long-term loan. The Project needs a way to get around on the water until we can activate one of the Bell SK-10 hovercraft.

"This time of year storms are a real danger, but I don't need to tell you that. The west coast of the Olympic Peninsula is very much exposed to all Pacific weather.

"Splitting the team into ground and maritime elements doesn't seem that useful. One would be a lot slower than the other, for one thing."

Elliot nods at Capt'n Kim's discussion of timeframe. "12 hours by boat, with a day or two to retrofit, or drive the 400 kilometers on primitive roads for about two days, then inflate a boat and motor over to the island.

"What's the weather going to be like for the next few days? I am really uncertain as to our forecasting capability, to be honest, sir."
He pauses. "Will we be bringing specialized equipment along, too?"

Re: Everybody Wants to Rule the World

El asks a general question, "Do those AP mines work in the freezing cold?"

When tasked, Elliot begins a list of items needed for the action. "We need hazmat gear," Elliot mutters. "Det cord and charges, too, in case we have to bury something. Geiger counters and anti-radiation meds for any people in La Push that may have been exposed. Extra trade packs and contact kits, as well as cold weather gear. Electronics tools, and sets of US and metric sockets, and maybe someone who reads Russian.." He makes notes on a pad of paper he brought with him. "We need to boost radio transmission, if we are going underground. Cutting tools, too, like a portable laser."

Elliot has a few more questions to ask before Weaver leaves the group.

"Sir... at the start of the briefing you told us that Combined Group Seattle is activated and we have half of our Project assets accounted for." He shrugs at the looks from other Team members. "It's a habit from college days, remembering things. Sir, does that mean that half of our equipment was recovered by the enemy and may be used against us, or is half of our stuff still in the ground?"

He thinks of another question. "Sir, what if we DO find a nuclear weapon?"

He chews his lower lip.  "Our CBR kits can do basic radiation detection, and our issue coveralls can convert to NBC suits, but a real hazmat suit for everyone makes sense.  My worry is carrying them, since they will be suspicious, and unless we can round up some mounts we may be afoot a bit."

"Good point, El. For the benefit of our newer personnel, please be reassured no one is hunting down the Project, at least locally. We believe that due to the couple metres of ash fall over the last 150 years our "missing" teams and installations are simply unable to receive the recall codes. Due to this seismic activity there was a period of earthquakes that has thankfully receded, but some boltholes were damaged. Come the spring we are going to mount a concerted effort to locate and activate the rest of the Group assets."

In fact, all the prewar Project members noted signs of damage like cracks and buckling to parts of their boltholes, albeit minor.

"I don't have the specs for the M25 anti-personnel mine offhand, sorry! A demo pack is fine. Trade and Contact kits are fine, but we don't have a lot of weapons here to issue for the latter other than crossbows, a couple double-barrel shotguns and a .22 rifle. You should all still have your issue Cold Weather kits.

"Any HAZMAT gear like hazard suits will be stored in hard cases. Speaking of Hazard suits, we have some Mark I suits here. Mk. II hazard suits are kept at the main base in Tukwila. Same thing with man-portable Mk. II lasers, but I think those might all be in use at the moment with the engineering teams assisting with evacuation operations at Mt. Rainier.

"The AN/PRC-70 radio can be set to automatic repeater mode in order to boost signals. Generally, we'd issue you two units. One for the boat, the other for your shore party. If you put it in the right place it will boost traffic between your personal AN/PRC-68 radios and the boat.

"Project policy is not to use mines either near civilians or unless we know exactly where they're going in. We don't know beforehand if our "flank" will be where people normally like to fish or do their laundry or play. The civvies in the area we can barely communicate with, much less warn about what a "minefield" is. And if we use mines to cover a retreat then that's even worse. We lose all control over them. Maybe a Krell steps on one while in hot pursuit, maybe a woman gathering firewood does a week or month later, or a kid thinks it's some kind of toy. See what I mean?

In reply to James (Jimmy) Gerrold MacGuire (msg # 52):

Scribbling some notes, Darryl thought for a moment.

"I've been down to Little Da Nang and Captain Kim gave me a tour of his boat. I've also seen it out of the water when it was pulled out for winter overhaul and conversion from wood charcoal boiler to alcohol fuel.

"It's a prewar steel-hulled 32-footer, single screw in great shape. No rust or corrosion. Probably a harbour-master boat at one time would be my guess. No freezers. North Sea design, very stable. But slow, 9 knots cruising speed.

"There's a berth that sleeps 4 in 2 bunk beds forward, small cabin amidships with a tiny galley on the portside and command chair on the starboard. Big open rear deck, it's got rigging and gear for trawling added on after the war and we could remove that for more space. Bigger than a pickup bed, smaller than a Deuce. No radar or sonar any more. We can rig a new radar unit, no sonar I'm afraid.

"You could fit 9 people in the boat plus a lot of gear. Or 9 people, an ATV plus some gear."

Checking his notes for the armoury and inventory.

"Ok. No V-150 amphibious kits. No Mk.19s, but those are pretty rare even after the 1987 refit. Demolitions kit and demo charge. There is an XM174 available. Claymores, ground and trip flares, smoke grenades, tear gas, MAG-58 with tripod, all the normal issue gear and weapons.

"The V-150 APC and 20mm FSV are both spoken for by the local QRF. We can spare RECON P44's Commando Ranger plus two XR311s. There used to be a Commando Scout available but, well, it kind of got dinged up. Just a little."

Darryl, if we are installing a Project power plant in that boat, I want as much as possible to be converted to electric, a couple burners and microwave both, please.  And get some lamps and such on it.

"Aside from a booth, the "galley" is a small counter with a cupboard below that can hold a small microwave or an electric hotplate. But actually not both simply due to space.

"Come to think of it I'm not sure how we could even do that. We are converting the alcohol-powered engine to a fusion-electric generator and electric motor but we don't have time to rewire the entire boat for standard electricity. We could try but that could delay completing the conversion. We can rig some power leads to a battery charger, the radar and a spotlight but anything more would be basically an extension cord. Not very robust, I'm afraid."

"Yeah...  Extension cords running across the deck covered in sea water.  That's a recipe for a shorted out motor or a fire.  Bad day in either case.  We'll just have to cook over charcoal."

"The ribs will probably be the highlight of the dinner table, but all we really need is the ability to eat on the run until we get there.  Once on the island, we could look for fish or game to add to the menu while we are investigating."

Andy scratches down the list that Sabio recites, nodding as their supplies come into focus.  "Weaver, one thing that we might need is some lighting and caving gear.  Can we 'borrow' some lights for the explorers along with some rope and hardware?  We may have to set up camp underground and it will be miserable if we are running back and forth to charge the flashlights.  Shouldn't take up much room either."

"I feel pretty good with the security gear unless someone else can think of something we missed."

"This boat is intended to be lived on while working, if a little cramped. Four people can sit in the booth at time. As long as you have a way to boil water you can use the small counter in the galley or the table to prepare freeze-dried rations.

"There is no Project-issue "caving" kit. I think a Mountain kit would suit you, and the island looks like you might need to climb up some sheer cliffs if you don't find a entrance near the waterline.

"I'm not sure why you think you'd need to camp in the cave? You are supposed to go in for a quick recce to see if it's safe. If it's safe enough to camp then your task is complete at that point. But again, a mountain kit, some work lights and power cords won't be a problem. We also have a solar power charging unit as well."

"That sounds good, but sometimes stuff hits the fan.  Some basic survival and camping stuff should not take up a lot of space.  We can live without luxury and frankly this already sounds more luxurious than a commando ranger.

As far as a hot plate, which I prefer over a microwave, running on an extension cord, that is fine.  Remember, we don't have to leave it plugged in.

Sounds like a consensus we are reaching.  No ATV, Hotplate on an extension cord, some gear just in case things can't wait."

1. Dock master, get the Naughty Lass to the ramp for a pickup by the Project.

2. Send the word out that armored men and women with bombs are attacking boats and trucks.

3. Monroe family attacked and boat was sunk by these bombers, need help from the yarders/builders to salvage it SOON. A pig roast could be in their future for a quick response.

4. Get the yarders/builders to give a price for barter on new or other hull.

5. Get a runner to his Father to be ready for a boat trip. Ask him to get one of the Uncles to come along too.

6. Ask the Amerind at the gate if he wants to go for a boat ride.

"If there is proof of dangerous radiation and toxicity hazards we want to bring it to their elders first, so they can get the word out for their people to stay away before the full moon festival. Leaf isn't the brightest bulb on the Christmas tree so she will probably accept our findings if they are presented as fait accomplis with the blessings of the elders.

"The plusses are that she discovered the site and declared it "holy". She can guide us there (although we know where it is on the map) and knows the local language. She might decide to let us do a thorough check and declare the site off-limits if it's dangerous. Then again she might not."

Orders went out as the wet, rainy day dawned.

Supplies were put together. The V-150 engineering vehicle carrying a fusion cell inside and towing a portable shop was dispatched to the docks of Little Da Nang, a little ways to the south. If the team wanted to travel on it they could hitch a ride, or else borrow one or two XR311s and of course the Recon team's Ranger.

By working through the day the fusion-electric engine could be swapped out for the old internal combustion one. With luck the craft could be made seaworthy by that evening. They could be off the next day, if all went well!

Lina, being the RTO, helped with the installation of the radio and other comms gear. She wanted to make sure that the gear, even though it was supposed to be mil-spec, was in a dry, protected space and would be as out of the weather as possible.

Re: Everybody Wants to Rule the World

In reply to James (Jimmy) Gerrold MacGuire (msg # 93):

Taking a moment to think, Daryl responded, "it's not a clearly good choice. On one hand you get the services of a guide who knows the local language but she is very likely to feel she has a say on your operations and set conditions that you might not like. On the other, if you don't take her there is a good chance she'll see this as perhaps a way to cut her out of the loop until we've made our investigation and she'd be right. That could cause problems for the Project in general, albeit a minor one.

"It boils down to your priorities. If your priority is to have a smooth mission then I say leave her behind. You don't really need a guide, and the natives probably won't talk to you no matter what, and what are they likely to say that's a help? If your priority is to maintain the goodwill of all the Fishers (and remember she only represents the views of a part) with regards to the Project as a whole, then take her along and hope you can at least do some kind of minimally intrusive determination, staying within her limits to keep her happy."

OOC: Sorry, I didn't see any mention of a case of Thermite. But yes, you can easily get a case, no problem!

"Tough choices.  We are supposed to be about the people, and rebuilding, but this little dog and pony show is about a threat."

A smirk comes to his face.

"Any chance an invitation can arrive for her too late for her to join us?  Lost in the mail?  He shakes his head and laughs ruefully.

"I think, honestly, we shouldn't risk the life of a native guide on this mission.  You got to break eggs to make an omelet, you know?"

In reply to Darryl 'Sabio' Weaver (msg # 100):

It was 0800 when the newly-formed team got down to business.

Darryl and Jimmy got ready to head down to the Project main base at Tukwila to meet with the prospective guide. The trip would be 5 hours (both ways), probably 6 hours total including the meeting.

Captain Kim and Bobby Lee went with the engineering V150 to the fishing village of New Da Nang to help oversee the conversion of the fishing boat to fusion-electric power. The trip to New Da Nang would be 2 hours, each way.

The rest of the team could either go with Kim and Bobby to New Da Nang, stay at the Project outpost in Maryville to gather supplies for the expedition or go with Jimmy and Daryl to Tukwila to see if the bigger base had a better selection of supplies and equipment.

Over the next few hours, Jimmy is shuttled down to the main Project base at Tukwila.

What supplies that are to be had at the outpost in Maryville are marshalled for including on the expedition.

At New Da Nang the conversion ran into some technical snags. There were issues with how the fusion-electric motor could fit into the available space, and various means were tried to get it to fit into the space allotted.

Down in Tukwila, Jimmy was introduced to Leaf Water Wind. She was a young woman in her 20's, part-Amerind and part Caucasian. She grew up in the Puget Sound, on one of the San Juan islands.

Leaf told Jimmy she was born on Orca island, one of the San Juan Islands. The San Juan islands in Puget Sound and their brethren across the border in the Canadian waters of the straits of Juan de Fuca were named after the first European explorers. Not the English but the Spanish, exploring up from California.

Orca island was one of the larger islands in Puget sound with its tallest mountain. (The original name, "Orcas", is a shortened form of Horcasitas, or Juan Vicente de Güemes Padilla Horcasitas y Aguayo, 2nd Count of Revillagigedo, the Viceroy of Mexico who sent an exploration expedition under Francisco de Eliza to the Pacific Northwest in 1791.) It and had a population part fishery-based, part new-age hippie tourism-based and part native. It also had farming and agriculture to rely on. The population melded to form one of the oldest and most successful Fisher (aka Whale Worshipper) populations after the War. She herself was unmarried and skilled on the water. She had been as far south as Oregon and as far north as Haida Gwai'i (once).

She was smart and had an open and easy personality, if a little intense. It was clear why she was considered a respected voice in her community despite her young age.

"Wear and use what you want.  Don't have to take any of it, you aren't part of the project.  Wanted to offer what can be of use, and might as well start with a full kit and pare out what you need.  Let me know if there is something you would find very useful, ok?"

He collects the rest.

"Come on, we need to get back so you can meet the team, and I get my beauty rest."

The team RV'd at the Maryville outpost for the evening, including those who had visited the main Project base in Tukwila and the group that had been involved with installing the fusion engine in the boat drydocked at New Da Nang.

There had been technical troubles with installing the Fusion-Electric powerplant and the 2 Engineering team personnel assigned to the job planned on working through the night to have it ready for morning.

Jimmy will drop to autonav off at the boat and introduce Leaf to the Engineers, then call for a quick meeting with the team.

"Folks, meet Leaf Water Wind, our native guide.  She's seen our fish, and take us to it.  She will need a little help filling out her kit for the trip.

Also, I have brought the autonav, and have managed to secure two of the type II hazard suits, in case we need them.  Here is hoping that cross country is not what we will be doing.

Did anyone double or triple up our climbing gear?  That might be a needed thing, in a big way."

In reply to Elliot Charles Pendergrass (msg # 140):

A young woman in her 20's dismounted from the Ranger MPV that had brought them up from Tukwila to Maryville.

"Hi! Pleased to help however I can. You Project folks have really helped my people, the "Fishers". Kind of like the best of the old world. But some of the worst of the old world is still out there, like the War Whale. If we can consecrate its resting place maybe the bad things won't come back. We'd better get going. I can sense a storm is coming."

The young fenale "Whale Worshipper" was dressed in locally-produced homespun garb, without a lot of extra jewelry and ornamentation. She was carrying a lance-like harpoon (of the kind used for spear-fishing) with a bow and quiver slung across her back. A Project-issue backpack sat at her feet.

It was past 1800, already dark. A light shower began, a few raindrops for now but a sign of things to come...

Jimmy laughs a moment, then circles his arm over his head.

"You heard the lady, people.  Let's get everything loaded that isn't, do our last minutes and get to the boat.  I got a feeling Leaf's weather sense is pretty refined."

He looks up at the sky.

"And my gut tells me this won't be any cake walk."

And he sets to loading and checking himself.

Indeed, the Project did have such medication.

Working through the night the Engineering team personnel finished converting the old harbourmaster's boat. It still wasn't fast but it had a good draw and was very stable.

For getting to shore they could tow a Project zodiac (either inflatable or rigid-inflatable) or stow a small craft on deck (or both).

They were well behind timetable (mostly due to factors out of their control) by the time they were ready in late morning. The drizzle of the previous day had increased to a steady Pacific Northwest rain.

There were Gore-Tex rainsuits available in Project stores, but no advanced open-ocean survival suits that would keep them alive if they went overboard in the ocean.

With all the people onboard it was getting to be a tight fit on the boat. A kayak would probably not be pushing it either way. They still had to decide whether they were going to take an inflatable raft, or tow/stow a Zodiac for ship-to-shore transfer.

Acting as liaison to the team with the local Project supply depot, Darryl was able to obtain a 4-person inflatable dinghy. This was kept in a case and inflated via CO2 canister, and maneuvered by paddles.

The other was a 6-person rigid inflatable Zodiac. It was powered by an electric outboard motor.

"Do you want the Zodiac stowed on deck or towed behind? Depends on how much space you need, and the deck is already getting full."

Re: Everybody Wants to Rule the World

In reply to James (Jimmy) Gerrold MacGuire (msg # 167):

Having been deployed (frozen) in 1987 before WWIII (in 1989) there was no way Jimmy could know of the beloved local character known only as "Sponge Bob". Some time after the war, in the aftermath of the Plague and eruptions that wiped out most of the population of the Puget Sound, a survivor and refugee fleeing California named "Steve" had wound up in the Viet encampment in the northernmost reaches of the ruins of Seattle. Formerly a marine biologist, Steve helped the Viets recover lost skills in fishing and harvesting marine life to help them survive.

He was also an artist of sorts and drew cartoons and murals on the walls of some of the Viet settlement's buildings of an anthropomorphic sea-sponge character he called "Sponge Bob". further amusing the children by making up stories about Sponge Bob and his friends, his storytelling even including singing a made-up theme song for a TV show that would never be reproduced in this timeline, at least not until there were TV stations again! Like so many others Steve died in the winter of '96. But Sponge Bob was remembered and passed down to keep his memory alive and to amuse the Viet children for many generations.

That said the supplies and equipment were loaded. Passengers started embarking. It looked like only Captain Kim was willing to take this trip, although with the new engine there was much less need of a crew. Out across the slate grey waters of the sound a cold wet wind blew, driving on dark rain clouds before it although it hadn't started raining. Not yet.
