Hmmm project or not project, that is the question.

If they are project, I assume they have been awake a while already?  We won't have a "Fresh Team"?

In reply to Moonsaber (msg # 7):

I assumed this would be a newly-formed team starting from the Project base at Tukwila Collective consisting of some local recruits and a cadre of Project personnel. I wouldn't have thought that a frozen team would be activated for the express purpose of carrying out this assignment although it is certainly possible.

On one hand, we've all been to this rodeo before (with the possible exception of Cymon). Probably many, many times. The only interesting variations is some sort of contrived crisis, which probably wouldn't be the case here.

On the other hand, at least some or all of the Project personnel could go through a classic wakeup/activation scenario, for old time's sake. I have thought of something interesting along these lines, if you're game. The great thing about rpol is I can assign characters to different threads, and they can't read what's happening to the others.

Ok everyone, for those choosing prewar Project members, you will be on assigned to a RECON team, part of a Regional RECON group. Your team freeze date will be 1988. Due to the late deployment date after the Project-wide update in 1987, you would not have been retrained on new gear.

In reply to Ian (msg # 11):

Jeeze, I gotta do all the work? Fine! Just because I like you.

Important Background Considerations:

  • No high-speed, low-drag PCs. This is a RECON team. Anyone with special warfare qualifications and/or experience (Special Ops) would probably be earmarked for a MARS or even a Phoenix team. So please tone it down a little! Regular military, reserve or National Guard experience is fine.
  • Pick a middle name. Almost everyone has one, for Pete's sake!
  • Pick a religion, or none at all.
  • Sexual orientation is up to you. By the late 80's there would be no need for gay PCs to stay in the closet. Trangender identity is still a touchy subject.
  • And this from my friend Kurt's game: no weirdo loners. Detail your families.

As a note, I am on vacation in Trinidad. It's more like just hang out and enjoy wifi and aircon while the grandparents spoil Giannamara, my daughter, so I have had a fair amount of time to post and so on. But we are taking an excursion to a resort on Tobago and while the hotel might have wifi, I don't know if it'll be a good idea to be wedded to the Chromebook. My online time over the next few days might be limited, is what I mean!

Damn Tony, you seriously travel!

I get to go places like Michigan, Georgia, Mississippi, Indiana, Illinois.

You do.. countries!

That said... I am rattling around my head what I will play.  Tempted to play a Van Doo in honor of my other running character, or a 3rd Herd 19D.  I have more personal experience on the second, or maybe I should play a NGer deer hunter car salesman that is a "Contact Man".

Thoughts?

Re: Out of Chracter Posts I

Ok.. percolating.

How about a former 19D (US Army Cav Scout), did his 4, then joined the NG, kept up his skills.  From someplace like Upstate New York or PA, where Deer Hunting is like a religion, and his "Real" job is a used car salesman.  He's roughly 30, divorced, has elderly parents, no kids and probably some siblings that have kids.

Contact Man with some military background.  Joined the project because he "gets" it, wants to do the right thing.. and let's face it, if your job is used car salesman in someplace like Binghamton NY or Scranton PA.. the world ending almost sounds tantalizing.  (J/K)

Thoughts?

Re: Out of Chracter Posts I

So you're Kelsey.  I'm Abbott.

I was thinking of a civil engineer from Wyoming.  Graduate of Colorado School of Mines.  Minor in Humanitarian Technology Applications.  Time overseas in the Peace Corps to pay for college and work with a few NGOs doing humanitarian projects in  Asia and Africa.

Outdoor enthusiast but not a gun person. (Hiking, camping, climbing) Veteran of the Appalachian and Pacific Crest Trails and has summited many of less time intensive Colorado 14ers.

Living father and younger brother.  1 aborted engagement that fell through due to career.

UPDATE!

Mahalina Rae Powell.  Born August 28, 1957. Mixed race white/Filipino.

Her father was a Navy Seabee working on the construction of Cubi Point NAS in the Phillipines.  Her mother was a local girl who ran a concession stand near the main gate.  They met and eventually got married returned to the land of the big PX.

Re: Out of Chracter Posts I

Moonsaber, Bullet Magnet,

All these concepts sound fine.

PCs can be American or Canadian citizens. (Immigrants are fine!)

I think we're going to get a medic so that's covered. (I wouldn't allow a Doctor on a RECON team, anyways.)

To reiterate, going forward all new PCs must be either local recruits or part of a Regional RECON team frozen in 1988. (There is no longer a need to roll for freeze date as it's set for everyone.)

Re: Out of Chracter Posts I

Yup, that was why I was making a "Contact Man", always want people that are good with people in your Recon teams.  Part of the mission of Recon is being able to talk to the citizens and gain intelligence that way.

I love the idea of playing the newly awakened, but I am ok playing a local, or someone that has been awake for a while, since I know the setting.  (I had a rather long stint playing the acting team lead in the last game.)

I am very flexible about what to play.

1988.  That was the year that I went to basic training.  I was 18 years old. So long ago and yet seems like yesterday.
