Re: NPCs and Monsters

Other Chartered Explorers
The PCs’ party is but one of four groups chartered by the
swordlords of Brevoy to explore and settle the Stolen Lands. If any of
the PCs expresses an interest in learning more about the other
three groups, each of the following paragraphs of information
can be discerned with a DC 15 Knowledge (local) check.

Glenebon Uplands:
King Surtova sent an
experienced order of Hellknights known as the Iron Wraiths
into the Glenebon Uplands, charging them with purging the
hills of the Tiger Lord barbarians and, eventually, to make
diplomatic contact with Pitax to work out border issues.

Nomen Heights: The centaurs of the Nomen Heights
have always been trouble, and in an attempt at a show
of force, the swordlords sent a group of mercenaries led
by one of their own, a low-ranking but eager-to-impress
noble named Maegar Varn to establish a town and
make peace with the Nomen centaurs.

The Slough: The East Sellen River runs through the
swamps known as Hooktongue Slough. As the most
vital trade route from the south, this area has been the
most important to Brevoy — as a result, a large group of
diplomats and high-ranking soldiers has been sent into
this area to ensure the trade route is open and safe.

Re: NPCs and Monsters

Varnhold and Magus Varn
Varnhold rests in a wide valley between two low mountains of the Tors of the Levenies. There are two established routes into the town. One following the road south from Nivakta’s Crossing, and another an overland route through the wilderness and a low spot in the Tors. Since Varnhold was founded, locals have begun to refer to the pass as Varnhold Pass. The primary buildings in Varnhold include an Inn (The Waterhorse), a church of Erastil, a town livery, a small brewery (brews Cheerful Delver Stout), and the townhall.

Varnhold’s lord and founder is Maegar 'Magus' Varn, a noble who achieved some measure of fame in the past decade leading a group of mercenaries. While a handful of his followers feel that he is imperious and cold, most describe him as demanding but fair, with a genuine concern about the welfare of the people of Varnhold. Also noted was a love of the arts and learning, he spent several of his formative years in Oppara’s colleges.
