Shadow:
Well, of course the players need to be on board for a game to work... perhaps I should reword my question a bit into "what set the series apart from others, similar fantasy series?" :)
I think by the time they hit 7 and beyond it was familiarity. People had been following the series and wanted to see it through to the end. They were also generally very pretty games that were well advertised. I admit, 8 was the last one I finished (partly because soon after I went away to college and didn't have a play station!) I never could get through 9 and never touched 10. But still, I'd credit a lot of Squarsoft/enix's success to its reputation. They did make good games early on.
I actually think Final Fantasy tactics was one of my favorites. I liked making groups of hydras and dragons even if they were terrible compared to any of the human classes :D Plus the story was fun - betrayal of your best friend who you as a player can actually sympathies with, etc. And Agrias was pretty bad ass :) I squeed with joy when I got her. I think the hidden characters helped make the game fun too, having something extra to search for!
I also liked (6? the one with with Locke) better than 7, personally. Following all your different characters stories and finding out how they intertwined was pretty cool, that and Kefka was an awesome enemy! He was clown! A sadistic evil clown! And his whole betrayal of the emperor and destroying the world was pretty cool - its a rare game where the villain
actually destroys the world. <3 Locke, Celes and Terra.
EDIT: I sorta feel like the final fantasy series is very character driven as opposed to a lot of other RPGS (I'm thinking western ones) that seem to be very world driven. Maybe that has something to do with it? All in all, I think my favorite RPG of all time is Baulder's Gate. *swoon*
