Intro Thread: Destrii
It was pretty rare for the Doctor to steer the TARDIS straight. It was even rarer for him to be happy to do so for what must have seemed like a frivolous request. Nevertheless, he had been happy to deliver his fishy companion to Earth, so she could pay a visit to one of the conventions that were a particular feature of the 21st Century's popular culture. It was something of a social anthropological field trip for them both (so he said) though secretly, there was a suspicion that he wanted to go somewhere that did not involve being attacked by anything nasty. I mean, who would believe that a bunch of Sontaran troopers would possibly invade ComiCon? Impossible!

The con had actually gone incredibly well. Many panels, many cosplayers, and a great many fun things to purchase. It was a sci-fi afficionado's paradise. While Destrii had been presented with a smorgasbord of things that nobody could possibly sample in totality, the Doctor had preferred to stick with only a limited range of topics.

It had caused problems. he had been forcibly ejected from a "Science of Star Trek" panel for constantly correcting them on their theories. He had explained the holes in the wormholes used in Sliders, and explained (accurately) how to actually generate them, earning a second ejection. Perhaps the most embarrassing of all was when he was flung out of the John Carter fandom discussion for his adamant insistence that Mars really DID house green men, though they were far from little.

All in all, he had proven to be a social liability. He had been warned that if he upset one more person, his priveliges wouyld be revoked and he would be removed from the building, without a refund. Not that he had paid, but all the same ...

He walked along behind his Companion, trying to justify his behaviour. "All I am saying is, if you are going to do something, you should do it properly. Half the panels here haven't a clue what they are talking about! I don't really understand why you would want to come to a science symposium filled with such half-baked theories. And I am also totally baffled about why people keep asking if I am dressed as Oscar Wilde, and can they have a photograph taken. If I wanted to dress as Oscar Wilde, I'd wear one of his jackets. I've got three of them in the TARDIS! And what's more..."

There was a sudden unpleasant, greasy feeling in the air, rather like a fine mist of sunscreen filling the room. Behind Destrii, a sudden flare of sooty red light appeared. Where the Doctor was standing, there was a shrieking whirlwind of reeking crimson and black light, slithering up his body. By the time it was possible to register it, it was already most of the way up his legs. Strangely, almost everyone else in the area had simply vanished. The hall went from a riot of noise to total silence in an instant. It was actually hard on the ears.

Re: Intro Thread: Destrii
Social anthropological field trip? Destrii had fluttered her gills when he'd claimed that. The Doctor had been right into it too, chatting to celebrities, getting autographs, buying books and toys. Well, he'd made her buy them, but she knew who they were really for. She wondered if he knew what would be precious antiques in a hundred year's time or something. But at least she'd gotten his shiny credit card thingey that made people give her stuff. Lots of stuff.

But then he'd gotten into the panels. Seriously, he was a total dork. I think I liked it better when he stood me up last time. Con security were feebs, she could have taken them with one leg tied behind her back. But Destrii just pretended she didn't know him and watched them haul him out. Heh. She swore he'd even drawn his sonic screwdriver on a cosplaying alien. Can't take him anywhere.

Destrii tuned out his complaining and adjusted her wig. Normally, a mutant fish-cat girl would attract a bit of attention, except on 21st century Earth at a sci-fi convention. Put that fine mutant fish-cat girl in a cute little red Starfleet uniform, with a low-cut top, high black boots, legs to the sky and a miniskirt just beyond that, and she attracted quite a lot of attention. Unfortunately, last time, she'd only come third in the cosplay contest: full marks for detail, less because her species "wasn't canon". So, this time, she'd gone all out. She'd twiddled the transparency on holographic envelope until it made her a little bluer and still hid the scales and fins, donned a white wig over her (invisible) head tendrils, and tucked her barbels up under a headband and the wig to make them into little antennae she could wiggle at will. With the (genuine!) Starfleet uniform, she made a perfect Andorian. A mutant disguised as a human disguised as an alien. Genius.

Oblivious to how things started to get weird around her, she returned 'You should have said you were Wild Bill Hickock or something... Now, come on, I've got to win the cosplay contest before I can get Jason Momoa to sign my—' Trailing off, Destrii started to feel a little sick in the gills. The air tasted funny, greasy and chemical. Suddenly they were alone. Turning, she saw the Doctor being engulfed by some weird red whirlwind. 'Not again...' she groaned. Dropping her bags of comics and collectibles, she lunged forward, grabbing the Doctor's wrists and trying to haul him bodily out of the whirlwind. Destrii had incredible strength and she put up a fight. 'What is it? A Sliders wormhole?' she grunted.

Re: Intro Thread: Destrii
"Temporal rift!" the Doctor clutched at her hands. But it wasn't actually trying to pull him in, such as a vortex might do, but actually engulf him. It very quickly rose over his torso, leaving his head poking out, and his hands. The whole thing had a unique stench about it, and the way they seemed to have been isolated from the others present suggested that this was a deliberate, directed attack rather than anything remotely random.

As the attempts to yank him out of the vortex failed (it just came with him) he quickly rattled off a few instructions. "Let go! It might try to take you too! Get to the TARDIS and activate the tracking device that is under the navigation panel. It's locked in on my spatio-temporal signal. It should be able to home on me eventually and mrpphhhh..." The vortex closed over his mouth, muffling his words. Then, with a rather wet sounding detonation, the whole thing exploded. It did not hurt, but it did throw the gilled lady some distance across the floor - and left her with an unpleasant coating of reddish-black slime, for her troubles. It stank like rotting seaweed.

This was definitely not something that had been on the con's itinerary.

Re: Intro Thread: Destrii
'Let it!' Destrii yelled back, still pulling, still holding on. She'd follow the Doctor anywhere now. But she didn't get the chance, when the vortex closed over him and exploded, hurling her away. 'Doctor!' she yelled, hurrying back. But he was gone and she was alone. Don't leave me alone.

She stared for a moment, heedless of the slime and the stench, which overcame her briny scent. What just happened? This whole thing stank, and she didn't even have a nose. Then the warrior reacted, turning and running.

Then she hurried back to collect her spilled bags. Would she have time to make the cosplay contest?

OOC: Okay, okay, she'll go to the TARDIS. :) Do the con-goers reappear?

Re: Intro Thread: Destrii
The con-attendees started to reappear, one by one, popping in where they popped out, and apparently entirely unaware of the events that had just transpired. However, Destrii's appearance made those nearby look askance. her stink and goo were definitely not winning her any friends!

The TARDIS had been parked not too far away, in a cupboard that was mostly used for janitorial supplies, like drain cleaner and those odd felt discs on the bottom of floor polishers. It was fortunate that it liked Destrii well enough to allow her to come and go as she pleased. The absence of the Doctor would otherwise have been something of a problem.

OOC: There's the answer! Destrii should have no problem gaining access to the TARDIS at this point.

Re: Intro Thread: Destrii
On long athletic legs, Destrii sprinted through the convention hall before too much of the crowd appeared around her, occasionally jumping tables, ropes, and startled geeks to save time. She even managed it with the heavy shopping bags.

Soon she found her way back to the cupboard, full of junk servants used, and found the TARDIS, pushing her way into the control room. Parking her shopping bags by the couch, she crossed to the console, muttering 'Tracking device something something...' What was the rest of it? If it was tracking, then probably navigation. She prised open the panel with her claws and got to work, following wiring and crystals, finding the component, and looking for an on switch. 'Antique junk.'

Unlike most companions, Destrii had some idea how to work a time machine. She'd flown a void glider on a test-flight through the space–time vortex and survived, though she'd gotten completely lost. She'd learned to co-pilot on Uncle's chronon capsule, and they'd gotten rather lost too. Now she helped the Doctor fly the TARDIS because he seemed to need it, and they got only a little lost. She was still very much a learner driver though.

Re: Intro Thread: Destrii
As Destrii was buried deep into the console, trying to figure out the frankly illogical design and wiring, a slow pulsing vortex started to materialise behind her. White, gently swooshing, and not really seeming to threaten - unlike the previous vortex field. The smell and the slime were still present, but they did not seem to be dripping into vital components. It was doubtful that the TARDIS would react favourably to being gooped.

After a few moments, the vortex spoke, and a very educated and aristocratic woman's voice passed comment. It might have been helpful, or it might have been critical. It was hard to be sure. "You don't want to do that. You'll bypass the chronometric lateral offset compensator. Could be very nasty. If you do that, you'll end up materialising on top of yourself. It would probably be very dramatic. And quite loud. But not really conducive to staying alive. It's Destriianatos, I believe? You don't look much like your picture. Have you done something with your hair?"

Re: Intro Thread: Destrii
Destrii jumped, banging her tendrils on the console. She craned her neck around at this new vortex, aware that kneeling under the console in a stupidly short Starfleet miniskirt was giving whoever it was a good view of her matching knickers. At least this one wanted to talk and not swallow her up. 'Is that you, Fey?' she wondered, remembering the Doctor's posh friend who helped drag her kicking and screaming to Oblivion. But she stepped out of shadows, not white lights. And she'd probably have stuck a gun in her face by now.

Annoyed mostly at being corrected, and being called by her full name, she retorted 'It's Destrii. I'm in cosplay. And I'm doing fine, ta.' She turned back to the underside of the console, looking for the chronometric lateral offset whatsit.

"As you wish, Destrii. And you're not doing as well as you think. Cross the wrong circuit in there and you could plunge yourself off into time and space and never be seen again! Which would be a problem, as we rather need your help." The voice gave a slight sigh. "I am Lady Romanadvoratrelundar, Time Lady and emissary of the High Council of Gallifrey. If you could just turn around and pay attention." There was a slight, embarrassed pause. "It is rather difficult to hold a conversation with your underwear."

The voice continued, a little puzzled. "What exactly are you trying to do, anyway?"

Re: Intro Thread: Destrii
'Yeah, I get that a lot.' Destrii said idly on the topic of talking to her underwear. Being amphibious meant she was usually in a swimsuit, and eyes tended to wander south. She resisted her urge to wiggle her firm rump at the vortex while she thought this over. Now, people wanting and needing her, that got Destrii's attention. That sort of thing was usually followed by lots of thanks, rewards, and allegations she was a heroine. That made her feel all warm and fuzzy inside — especially if they were particularly adoring. She'd stopped thinking only of herself, and had settled for being benevolently mercenary. It was definitely an improvement.

She turned back to look at this vortex, answering with more haught than this Lady Romana de Whatever. 'I am Destriianatos of the House of Endoskiia, Matriax of Oblivion and the Horde — and I'm trying to get this tracking device after the Doctor because some gooey temporal rift thingy grabbed him. So, sorry Lady Romana de Whatever, we can't help you right now. Please leave a message after the beep and we'll save your planet at our earliest convenience.' After the cosplay contest. 'Beep.' she said, because the TARDIS didn't.

Re: Intro Thread: Destrii
The voice sighed. "I am afraid you might be disappointed. But go ahead, if you must."

The circuit adjustment to activate the tracker was not especially difficult. After all, the Doctor would not want to over-complicate things if his life depended upon it. Destrii was an exception. Most of his traveling companions were less than proficient, technically speaking.

The connection was duly made. It was followed by a buzzing, a smouldering, and then a short bang as the tracker system exploded in a puff of acrid smoke across Destrii's face. What it did not do was work, and help locate the Doctor.

Romana continued, with an air of superior smugness. "Well, I hope we've all learned something today. Are you ready to talk yet so we can actually go and find him, or perhaps there is some more property damage you would like to commit first? A hatstand to smash? Or perhaps you would like to take your boot to the internal configuration console?"

Re: Intro Thread: Destrii
For the sake of sheer bloodymindedness, Destrii went ahead and activated the tracking device as instructed. Which then exploded in her face. She shrugged it off as a "not my fault, not my problem", apart from the exploding in her face bit. She'd done as the Doctor instructed, she'd watched the compensator, and it was an antique piece of junk put together by the stupid-face Doctor and it was peasant's work anyway.

She grinned evilly at the vortex; her razor-sharp, needle-like teeth weren't especially in evidence, but she had a shark's smile nonetheless. 'How about I throw something heavy in there at you?' She was holding the panel to the console warningly. 'Where's the Doctor?' It was a demand, not a question.

Re: Intro Thread: Destrii
"I have absolutely no idea whatsoever," the voice admitted in a matter of fact manner. "That is rather the point. He's vanished. We were hoping that you might want to help find him. Things are really quite desperate. The TARDIS can't help you, reality has been too badly compromised. If you'd like to step into the vortex, we can go and get him, once we work out where he is. Or you could stay there, and watch reality go to hell in a handbasket, as the human saying goes. But do please make the choice soon. There's only a little time before that planet you are on stops existing, and then it might be too late."

Not an overly sympathetic way of putting it all, but at least it had the ring of honesty.

Re: Intro Thread: Destrii
Looking back to the broken tracking device, Destrii was about to sourly complain that (a) she knew the Doctor had vanished, she'd seen it happen; (b) she'd already been trying to find him when Romana-something had interrupted; (c) she kinda blamed her for the break-down; and (d): 'I've already seen hell in a handbasket.' But Time Lords and Ladies, Gallifrey; she remembered the Doctor talking about them on the Cyberman ship. They were his people, and sounded like it. If the tracking device was stuffed, if the TARDIS out of action, then they were her only chance of finding him. It's my turn to rescue you, Doc.

She was still suspicious, she still had questions, but for once her poor impulse control might be a benefit. Keeping to her threat to throw something heavy in at Romana, Destrii ran and leaped off the console dias, diving fluidly into the vortex. It wasn't the first time she'd hurled herself into the unknown either. Maybe she'd get to land on this Romana on the other side.

Re: Intro Thread: Destrii
As a means of crossing a dimensional vortex went, it was certainly novel. It was, however, also misguided. The vortex led to a room no more than two metres square, little more than room to stand in comfortably. The ceiling was very high. It also had a door, that resembled a TARDIS internal door very closely.

It was into this door that Destrii crashed, rather heavily, as her leap had not anticipated an obstacle quite so close. Conversely, the door had not anticipated being charged by a somewhat irritable fish woman, and especially not one in a ludicrous outfit and a healthy slathering of reddish slime. Consequently, the door gave way with a loud bang, falling to the floor noisily, and depositing Destrii into the chamber beyond with little grace. She fell through with the door, intruding with a degree of noise that should have echoed about the chamber, but the hint of tranquility in the room somehow managed to mute the sound, taking the harsh edge off slightly, as if the very air had a peaceful quality in itself.
