Intro Thread: Ancelyn
Married life agreed with Ancelyn. He had not thought to find anything he loved more than battle. He never once imagined his heart could be filled more than when he was in the fray, sword swinging, and the taste of victory in his mouth. And then, he had met a woman who was his very equal, in combat and in temper. He really had no choice in the matter, fate had clearly decided they were to be united.

Since then, he had maintained his duties as Knight Commander, though with Morgaine defeated, Avalon was mostly at peace. But he was never one to rest idly by just because nobody was currently at war with his realm. He drilled the knights of Avalon hard, but never expected anything of them that he could not do himself. Which was, he admitted, a little unfair on them, given that he was obviously invincible...

It was morning on the great tournament field. Two rows of armoured knights faced one another. In between them, Ancelyn stood, delivering their instructions. A tourney, within the rules of chivalry, to test their mettle. And he himself would take on the winning team - a little one sided, he agreed, as each side had only twenty men, but he promised to go easy on them as he was in a good mood.

He stepped to the side, and raised his horn. The sun glittered off his armour. He blew a brassy note!

And nothing happened. Absolutely nothing whatsoever. Nobody moved so much as an inch. the air was heavy, with the feel of a storm. And eerily silent.

Re: Intro Thread: Ancelyn
Ancelyn frowned at the lack of movement. Discipline was one thing, but this was taking it to the extreme. He strode up to one of the knights and lifted the visor of the fellow's helmet. He checked his eyes. And rapped the breastplate of his armour.

No reaction? And then there was the strangeness in the air...

He drew his sword and spoke loudly, so anyone within earshot could clearly hear him. "This is some sort of merry magic, I suppose? Come on, prankster. Show thyself, so I might appreciate your skill in person!"

Something told him this was not one of the little jokes that Merlin used to play. There was an unpleasant overtone to the air.

Re: Intro Thread: Ancelyn
The knights, unsurprisingly, did nothing. But the appearance of a vortex between the two lines ranged for confrontation seemed to be a response. It swirled, it twirled, and it twinkled. And, oddly, it spoke. The voice was that of a lady of noble birth - nobody else could sound so regal.

"I am terribly sorry to interrupt like this, Knight Commander. But there really isn't a lot of time to explain. I'm calling from Gallifrey, on behalf of the Doctor. There's a quest, you see. And we were hoping you would be willing to take it up."

She knew the way to his heart, all right...

Re: Intro Thread: Ancelyn
A Quest! Right, he was on this like flies on a horse's butt. Not that he would ever use such a crude analogy, but it was something that he had heard the common men at arms say on a number of occasions.

He checked his equipment. He also went along the row of knights and helped himself to several additional clips of ammunition, which he attached to his belt where his slim, but surprisingly powerful, sidearm was hanging. His sword was hefted in his hand.

He marched up to the vortex and spoke clearly, with the sort of zeal and rather brainless trust that got knights into trouble all the damn time. Ancelyn was no fool. But he did have a blind spot when it came to women handing out quests.

"I stand ready to be your champion, my lady. Speak! Tell me what task Merlin would have me do, and I shall not be found wanting. Must I slay some foul beast, or travel far and yon to bring back some essential treasure?"

It was a good thing his wife wasn't here. She'd probably have slapped him silly by now.

Re: Intro Thread: Ancelyn
The voice seemed very pleased that the knight was so accommodating. "The Doctor - that is, Merlin - has become victim of some terrible predicament. He has been removed from time, and the whole universe hangs in the balance. If he is not found, the whole of creation could be destroyed. We need brave and skilled people to seek him out and rescue him. Obviously, we thought you would be the best choice."

Buttering up his ego was a fairly good tactic. Knights were always willing to help when their egos were inflated.

Ancelyn did not need asking twice. He settled his armour, checked his weapons, and then set his jaw. "A quest to rescue Merlin, and to save the universe. You have come to the right knight. All shall fall before my sword, and the right shall be restored. Where must I go to meet this challenge?"

"Just step through the vortex. We shall meet you on the other side, with some new friends who can assist with the quest."

The vortex swirled, encouragingly.

Re: Intro Thread: Ancelyn
Never one to back off from a challenge, Ancelyn clapped down his visor, and marched into the vortex. A little voice in the back of his mind, that of the practical woman who had become his wife, told him that one of these days he was going to get into real trouble with his habit of jumping into these situations without due reflection. But he was a knight! This was what he did! And if Merlin needed his aid once more, he could hardly refuse to go.
