Destrii kicked around the back (so far as she could with guns trained on her), disinterested in all this backstory until it was her turn to talk again. 'We beamed down via a transporter. Our ship is waiting outside this system.' she replied, back in Vulcan-mode.

The ramshackle rebels muttered, and their leader spoke, frowning slightly. "You can prove what you say? You have a transmat? Could it take us off this planet?"

Well, if someone had been trapped in this dusty armpit of a place under dalek rule for a few decades, they probably would want to get off world as soon as possible.

Benny decided not to let Destrii answer that question, as her cosplaying had come close to getting them into serious hot water with the Movellans. And these rebels were far less welcoming. So she opted for the theoretically correct and truthful, but actually utterly misleading, response.

"I think it is safe to say that our means of transport can definitely be used to escape this planet. But we can't do that until we finish our job, and find out friends. I am serious. We need to get inside that base! And please stop pointing those guns at us! It's not as if we're pointing ours at you! In fact..." She very carefully, and slowly, removed the Movellan side arm from her belt, and threw it to the floor. "See? No gun. And for the record, that thing will turn a dalek into a lump of molten metal and green goop. It isn't a pea-shooter. Now, how about you offer us a... a... comfortable rock to sit on, and you tell us how come YOU are here, and not a bunch of dead people? The daleks clearly know where you are. Why haven't they killed you yet?"

She felt that was a perfectly valid question, under the circumstances. Daleks were not notorious for letting prisoners set up shop next door. They didn't pop over for a pint of milk, or ask if they could borrow the lawnmower. Their neighbourly repertoire extended to extermination, with a side order of enslavement - if they were feeling chipper.

Destrii opened her mouth to say something to the effect that they couldn't carry a lot of smelly rebels with them, even if they could, when Benny wisely answered for her. 'What she said.' She wasn't in any hurry to throw her weapons though, not her Movellan cone-thingey and especially not her phaser.

One of the bedraggled rebels cautiously picked up the weapon and examined it. He gave a nod to the woman, who seemed satisfied. Warily, she lowered her own gun, though most of her cohorts did not follow suit. "From time to time, ships used to run the dalek blockade. They usually ended up spread across the planet, in pieces. Our predecessors were able to salvage things occasionally. The force-wall projectors we use came from a battlecruiser of some sort. The daleks have never found a way to break through. So they have every way out of these caves targetted by shriekers. Once you step outside, you have little chance of survival. Sometimes we can get out - a single person can make it, if they move quickly enough. But one person can't do much damage to the daleks. Now and then, they are able to ambush troopers or Robomen. They carry ration packs. It isn't enough to feed us all. We grow cave fungus. It tastes as bad as it sounds."

She jerked her head further back into the cave. "Come. I'll show you what we know about the dalek complex, and why they are here at all. My name is Kel. The big fellow is Josk. He's not as bloodthirsty as he seems, but it takes a lot to fuel someone that size, so he's always starving hungry. It makes him irritable."

The vast man said something under his breath that was far from complimentary. But he looked cheerful enough as he did so.

Back in the cave, the rebel camp was as dilapidated and miserable as might be expected. They had very little, and what they did have was stretched to breaking point trying to keep them all alive. It was easy to see that they were not going to make it. It might take a month, or maybe two, but they were going to start dying. Maybe they already had. Life expectancy on a dalek world as a slave or a resistor alike was always fairly short.

'Your force-wall didn't do that battlecruiser much good, though.' Destrii observed, always a font of reassurance. She listened with feigned concern to the rest of the rebels' sob-story, but what she heard was that these rebels wouldn't be putting on a banquet to welcome them.

They wouldn't be putting on much of anything, it seemed, let putting up a fight, Destrii estimated as she gazed around the camp, sizing up the emaciated bodies. They were as weak and feeble as the peasants back on Oblivion, and were half-dead already. The only way this lot could keep going was if they ate the big guy first. Coming here had been a mistake how could these feebs help them fight Daleks? Well, except as cannon fodder.

'I'm Lieutenant Destrii, this is Professor Bernice Summerfield,' she introduced, trying to be Vulcan about it. 'Perhaps you could show us what you know about the Daleks now?' she said to hurry things along. The sooner they had, the sooner she could get out of this smelly hole. Except: 'And can you be a sweetie and get me some fresh water?' After a long hike through warm dry desert, she needed to rehydrate her gills.

"Professor?" Kel raised an eyebrow at that. "Professor of what? Are you here with some scientific solution to the dalek invasion? They slaughtered every academic on the planet within the first cycle of invading. Generations of science and history, butchered in one stroke. If the daleks learn your name, you'll be exterminated in an instant."

What a cheerful prospect.

Kel led them to a databank with a holographic projector. She kicked it several times, and it unwillingly came to life. Like everything else, it was close to death. She summoned up a map of the local area, showing the caves, the cliffs, and the dalek base - apparently, they had repurposed a large complex nearby. "This is their base. The daleks are here to mine. Our planet has a very high content of jethryk, and the daleks want it for some project that demands enormous energy reserves. Before they came here, the planet was protected from industrial development by galactic treaty. That did not stop them." Red dots marked the cave exits, and showed that the caves were surprisngly extensive. "Every one of the exits are targeted by shriekers. You might have been better off going elsewhere. You can get in here, but the chances of leaving are slender."

A rather ill looking woman brought a small cup to Destrii. "We don't have any fresh water. Everything is recycled. It's perfectly safe - but it doesn't taste of much."

Kel pointed to other spots on the map. "These are cave exits that don't lead anywhere - surrounded by cliffs on all sides. Only a few of us have any chance of scaling them. If you are really determined to get to the base, you can try to climb. It's dangerous. Patrols go by regularly. The only real chance you have is to climb at night. Free climbing a sheer cliff face at night with dalek troopers nearby ... it isn't my idea of a relaxing evening. But the daleks do not put shriekers on these exits. It would be a waste of resources - their troopers can pick us off one by one. Cheaper, and more efficient."

Recycled? Great, she'd left Victorian London and she was still breathing other people's urine. 'Ta.' Destrii took the glass of water, peering at it to see that it was transparent. Welp, she'd have to risk it. She sipped it, drank some more, found it was tepid and bland, hardly sparkling spring water, but it didn't taste of wee. She drank a mouthful, gargled some, then, oddly, tipped the cup against her neck on each side. This looked especially odd to someone who couldn't see through her holographic disguise.

She looked over the map, realising that these hapless rebels were under a hopeless siege. It was all a bit Empire Strikes Back. Only without spaceships, snow, shields, big-ass cannons, Jedi, talent... They'd come to the wrong place. 'I reckon I can sprint from the cave before your shriekers come in I did something similar against the Mobox, only the Doctor and I had jungle to screen us... And I can climb those cliffs with a bit of covering fire.'

Benny considered the map for a long moment. "Archaeology. Professor of Archaeology. More of a threat to dictators than you might think. Lessons of history, and all that."

She sighed. "I don't think I could guarantee being fast enough to avoid the shriekers, but I have a lot of experience scrambling about rock faces. You find a lot of fossils in cliffs, and I've got pretty good at hanging off mountains and things. Lieutenant Destrii is correct. With some covering fire, we might make it. And that might even give us a uniform or two to change into once we reach the top. It's not the best plan, but it is workable. But once we get to the top, we still need to know how to get into the base."

Kel and Josk exchanged a long, thoughtful look. Eventually, Josk sighed and pointed at the hopeless mess that was their home. "You said it yourself, just yesterday. We're finished. I know it, you know it, and everyone here knows it! I don't know about you, but I'd rather go out fighting than starve to death in a cold, dank hole!"

Kel gave a deep sigh. One that suggested she had come to a decision that had been hanging around for some time. "We have no need for an archaeologist here. Not until we're dead and buried. But there's other things we do need, and perhaps a little motivation is exactly what is required." She looked Destrii up and down thoughtfully. "Are you sure you can cover the ground fast enough? It's two hundred and thirty centons, more or less, and in rough terrain. Not many would chance it. If you're still in the target area when they hit... You'll be a smear. A very widespread smear."

Josk gave a snort, the first sign of amusement in his otherwise dour manner. "She's got a plan. We're all going to die." He gave a snaggle-toothed grin. "Good! I was getting sick of cave fungus every meal."

In the long wait for a response, Destrii had half-forgotten what they were talking about, and three-quarters lost interest. 'Yeah, that's right, you're all going to die. Schmucks.' she returned callously, as if insulting her captors was the wisest idea in the world. But she went on 'You said it yourself, you all know it. You were going to die the moment the Daleks captured you. You were going to die the moment you revolted. You were going to die the moment you holed up in these caves.'

'And now you've got to choose to not die. That's the motivation.' she pointed out. Destrii knew that someone pushed into a corner, about to face their death, would fight their hardest and bravest if they knew they could. Okay, they still died, but at least they didn't go out weeing themselves or being all whiny about it.

'So yeah, I will run your two hundred and thirty centons,' How big's a centon? Eh. 'Or you know what they say: live fast, die young, leave a beautiful smear over the landscape.'

'Can I circle around to your backdoor cliffs from the front entrance?'

Benny groaned internally. Destrii and Diplomacy. A book that Jane Austen would never write.

She did, however, see the merits of the idea she had suggested. "Very good... If you can get behind those dalek troops, you could take them down before they realise they are caught in a pincer movement. Which would give us a convenient number of weapons and uniforms. Provided we don't get shot like fish in a barrel going up the cliff. Will they even know we're climbing? Do they have troops there the whole time?"

Kel stared at Destrii for a long moment. "Are you for real?" It was not an uncommon experience for those first encountering the joys of Destrii-isms. And Kel, who presumably had all sorts of reasons not to, suddenly laughed. A short, rather tired laugh. "You're a breath of fresh air. Jexa knows, we need some of that down here. And the answer is yes."

She knelt on the dirt floor, and used a small stone to draw out a rough overview of the area. "We're here, in the caves. Front is this point. And this X, that's the closed ravine. It's a tough climb. Not a long one, but the hand-holds are tricky, and it is dry rock. It crumbles. If you're climbing, you won't be able to shoot. We can put people at the foot of the cliff to provide covering fire, if we need it."

She then sketched the surrounding area. "Once we get past the shriekers, we should be clear. They're automated. They'll know they were fired, but the daleks won't rush out to look. They'll divert a patrol to examine the area from outside the killzone. We'll be out of sight long before they arrive. Hardly anyone can outrun a shrieker bombardment, so they don't really put checking on corpses as a high priority. After we're safely outside the blast area, we can double back around the rocks and make it to the head of the ravine."

A few more scratches were added to the map. "This is where you'll climb up. The Lieutenant and I can wait there until nightfall, if you feel up to a dark climb. If not, we can risk it in daylight, but it will be more dangerous. Troopers or Robomen patrol along there every couple of hours. You can't do the climb in time to avoid them. They'll spot you sooner or later. Once we have them dealt with, we can regroup."

She continued to sketch. "Over here, there's a transmat station. They're well-guarded, and transmit directly into the heart of dalek control. It wouldn't be my first choice, but it is a sure way to get inside. But also a good way to be dead. Over here, we have the mines." She drew them in, in the other direction, away from the transmat. "Guarded. Mostly Robomen, and a few troopers. There'll be some daleks around, but not a lot of them. The terrain doesn't suit them. It takes longer, but you can get into the dalek complex from the mines. They lead into the slave pens, and those go through to dalek detention cells. Which are inside the main complex. Probably safer than transmat, but you will have a fight on your hands if you're spotted trying to get through the mines by stealth. It depends how much of a risk you want to take - and how much time you have."

'Yeah, too far ahead to think about.' Destrii decided, ignoring everything past the issue of getting safely out of the caves. 'Climbing in the dark will be too hard for you, so we should do it during the day. We can wait, ambush the Robomen, and toss them over the cliff. That'll be your sign to start climbing.'

She looked curiously to Kel. 'It sounds like you're coming with? No offence,' Okay, Destrii never meant not to make offence, 'But you don't look up to a sprint. And you're old.'

Moving swiftly on, she asked 'Now, do you know anything about the Movellans?'

Kel considered Benny and her own people. "She may be right. I do not doubt that you would make the climb, Professor, but not many of us could do so at night. We can time the climb to take best advantage of the situation. Once we kill the patrol, they will send another, but by then, we will have people in place to ambush them."

However, she gave Destrii a rather dirty look. "Don't make assumptions, lieutentant. I have made a shrieker run twelve times. Nobody else has even half that score. And for all your speed and your strength, you'll never make it without someone to show you the right path. I'm hardier than I look."

Josk, however, growled at the final question. "Movellans? They're no better than daleks. They've been at war longer than anyone knows. They say a Movellan force scourged Sigma Orionis, just to destroy a single dalek cruiser, fleeing from a lost battle. The Movellans plasma bombed the planet. Killed almost five billion people - all for the sake of maybe a hundred and fifty daleks. If they're coming her, then we're in real trouble. If they realise what the daleks are doing here, they'll do the same."

'Ah, so the run's not that hard then. There's a relief.' Destrii concluded from the news that Old Lady Kel had done it a dozen times, making the effort sound easier than it made Kel sound better, at least in her fin-crested ears. They heard much, but listened to little. 'Alright, we'll team up.'

She listened with interest and dread to the tale of the Movellans. Talk about overkill! 'Well then, we don't have to worry the Movellans are already here.' She showed them her purloined Movellan blaster by way of proof, if they hadn't noticed it before.

There was an agitated stirring from around the cavern, as the resistance heard that piece of news. Kel stared at the Movellan weapon as if it were a thirty foot long scorpion. "They're what?" She immediately started strapping on a lightly armoured vest, and loading her pockets with a variety of instruments and weapons. "That settles it, we can't wait. We need to go now! If the Movellans work out what the daleks are doing here, they'll destroy the whole planet, just to beat them to the prize. For all we know, the countdown is underway. We need to get rid of both of them as soon as possible. And if we can't... find a way off world. The daleks have shuttles, and trans-mat to their blockade ships. If we can get aboard one of those, maybe we can hijack it."

This caused an outbreak of incredulous alarm amongst her troops. The idea that they could hijack a dalek cruiser was obviously insane. But as far as she could see, she had little choice left. If they stayed on the planet, they were dead anyway.

Destrii looked aghast at the sudden outbreak of activity among the once lethargic rebels. 'Aww, can't I have a nap first?' she whined, but there was no stopping this now. She tugged her Starfleet miniskirt, realising she'd fallen completely out of character and role for this. She was a ragtag rebel now! 'I am so not dressed for this. Do you have some camouflaged fatigues and combat boots I can borrow?' she requested of any rebels still listening. 'Why are they called fatigues anyway? I mean, you don't want to get tired...'

Benny added to the situation by bringing up another problem. She was good like that. "The Movellans are also likely to be out for our blood. We may have slightly shot some of them. They're almost certainly going to be heading this way. It would be too much to hope that they get themselves blown up by a hail of shriekers in the process."

She pondered things, and then frowned. "You said this planet has a high content of jethryk ore. Daleks have never really needed to worry about energy supply before. If they want jethryk, it must be for something immense. What are they doing with it? I have a feeling that we won't like the answer very much. And that letting them finish whatever it is would be a very bad thing for life in general."

Kel considered Destrii, then gave a nod to one of her people, who started to remove his clothes to pass to the fish-female. They were pretty ragged, but still serviceable. Mostly. "We are not sure what their ultimate goal is," she remarked, "but we have put together some of the plan. You know what daleks are like. They can't help but rant about their superior status, and how their plans will always be victorious. They're using the jethryk to power some sort of device. I don't know what it is. Most of us were in the mines, we didn't get close enough to have a clue what this device is for. But more than once, they've been heard to talk about the final goal. And for daleks, their final objective is the eradication of all other life forms. If this device can do that, it must take an unfathomable amount of energy. Jethryk is one of the few elements that could come close to meeting their requirements."

Josk growled, face bleak. "Kel. If we've got daleks on one side, and Movellans on the other, we're out of time. Forget these caves! We don't want to die like blind worms. Send everyone! Die for something worthwhile! One final assault. Do or die!"

'Thanks, handsome.' Destrii offered a wink to the guy who started stripping off for her. She liked that. Unembarrassed, she pulled off her Starfleet uniform, standing in the middle of the crowded room in only her underwear. Amphibians, who spent half their time in swimwear or less, weren't known for being shy. Anyway, Destrii had everything to be proud of and was utterly shameless besides.

Then she changed again, tapping her pendant and shutting down her holographic human disguise with a blue ripple and a zreep. Now she was a blue-scaled fish-woman with fins and green tendrils for hair. 'So the Movellans don't recognise me. The other me.'

She passed her balled-up uniform and cosplay accessories to Benny, on the assumption that she'd take care of it, then shook the dust and smell out of the rebel rags. 'Bit daggy, but it'll do.' She pulled on the clothes, adjusting them artfully to look like the coolest scruffy nerf-herder she could be.

'Jethrik's usually used to power starship warp drives. It could be something similar.' she speculated.

"Daleks with a phenomenal power source. I don't like that sound of that at all. We'd better get moving, then. Soner or later, the Daleks and Movellans are going to have a showdown, and something tells me that this planet, and everything on it, are going to be collateral damage." 'Who needs luck when you have me?' Destrii enthused, going through a routine of stretches and loosening-up exercises. She clipped the Movellan blaster-cone to her belt (slinging it around behind her so it didn't dangle around her legs as she ran) and started jogging back toward the entrance to the caves. 'Play Chariots of Fire for me.'

Kel grunted, not really having a clue what Destrii was saying much of the time. But she joined her at the exit. "Stay close, the ground can be treacherous. And, if I do fall, don't stop to pick me up. I certainly won't stop for you. That would be a fatal mistake."

She did not say it with any hint of antagonism. She merely stated it as a fact.

Josk, now taking charge of those who remained, jerked his head further into the caves. "This way, then. Let's make a stand. One last time." Despite almost everyone being sure they might die, they all seemed reconciled to the attack. Those who could fight, anyway. A fair few would be left behind, but nowhere was safe on the planet now.

'Oh, or play that running song from Gallipoli...' Destrii continued to contemplate the soundtrack of her glorious life. She really wished she'd brought an iPod.

'Wasn't going to.' Destrii answered Kel, a little too quickly and a little too disinterestedly for comfort. She put her foot against the wall and leaned forward to stretch out her long, lithe legs, first one then the other. She had the casual attitude of one going for a light run, and really, she was. There was no room for doubt in Destrii's mind, because doubt got you dead in the Arena. She had no second thoughts she didn't have first thoughts half the time. She survived by on infinite self-confidence. She could do this, she would do this, and it would be awesome.

After some leg raises and bouncing up and down, Destrii took up a sprinter's start. 'Let's go like the wind.' she told Kel with a cocky grin.
