I would have much rather had a new star trek show in the old universe, then one decent movie, and one really bad one.
Not judging, but that is the quintessential form of
>muh nostalgia. If it's not in someone's comfort zone, then it's not worth paying attention to.
Still, do what you want. I'm gonna watch the new movie.
How am I not paying attention to them? I went to see them, i gave them a shot, and they disappointed me. I like star trek but it wasn't quite as important to me a star wars, so I had less strong feelings about a reboot. I was giving it a chance. It just failed to impress.
I also think it's a bit warped to call it just nostalgia. These aren't just books from my childhood. New expanded universe books were coming out until 2014. And it's also important to note that it was a profitable business. They were making money out of it. Not movie money of course, but profit was most certainly made.
They choose to cancel a highly anticipated set of books that had been announced.
They choose to cancel a book that was 70% completed according to it's author.
They made another author rewrite his book, which was 90% complete, to fit Disney canon instead of the expanded universe.
So my faith in Disney's plans to ever continue the expanded are at an all time low, I admit.
You have to understand that I've been following the expanded universe since I was a little boy. My father was a drunk and my mother was emotionally absent. I had no living role models to look to. So I took what I could from these books. And it helped me grow into a (hopefully) respectable man. I do not cheat on my taxes, i have never been arrested, committed no crimes except speeding and cycling on the sidewalk.
Since I was 11 I have been reading these books, i have been following what happens to Luke, Han, Leia and their children for all those times. I have about 200 expanded universe books.
So yes, I love the movies, they're what started it all. But in the end, they're what, 10 hours long combined? How much time does it take to read all those 200 books I have? A thousand hours? More?
At some point, it becomes about a whole lot more than just the movies. And that's not even counting the hundreds of comics I have, the many many RPG books. And the games. All of which, are set in the expanded universe.
These new movies, maybe they'll be good. I kinda doubt it because i'm not impressed with Abrams work in the past. But they might be good. And it won't matter for me.
Like Chu-shkar says. The makers are fans of the original movies. But for me star wars stopped being about just the movies a long time ago. It's about so much more. And all that, was just cancelled.
How would you feel if this game got cancelled and the GM started a new one? Would you just say "Oh well, it's still star wars". Or would you maybe feel a little bummed because you never got to continue the current game and it's current characters. Now imagine you'd been involved in the game for 19 years.. And then it got cancelled for something new.
The new movie cannot in any way or form fit into the expanded universe, and vice versa. And so, it just doesn't feel like star wars to me.
In star trek the next generation there's an episode where scotty appears. And he tells picard "There comes a time when a man finds he can't fall in love again". Well, I can't get excited about a new star wars universe anymore. I'm too old, and I miss the one I have been following for 19 years, which was a huge part of my life.
