The Renegade's Lair

Launching the speeder-raft Jason took Quantros and Lyla to track down Karak and his renegades. The repulsor-driven water vehicle bobbed on the surface of the green ocean whilst Jason awaited directions.

Quantros sat crosslegged on the waveskimmer, and looked back at Lyla and Jason. "It's been some time since I last tried this. It may require some time for me to attempt. I'll need no disturbance." Straightening himself out, he began to focus intensely, sensing his surroundings through the Force. He allowed the relaxing noises of the ocean to put him in a tracelike state, before he began sensing people through the Force. He didn't know if Karak was force sensitive, but he was of the Dark Side. Quantros attempted to find a strong source of the dark side through his connection.

'It's a shame we couldn't get out of that base fast enough. We might have followed Karak directly. Ah well.' Lyla had said ruefully, but she wasn't one to dwell on past errors and missteps – Goddess knew they had enough of those. Someone who had to retrace her steps was someone who was lost. 'Jason, you take the wheel.'

She waved Quantros to go ahead and try, still half-expecting nothing to actually happen, half-humouring him and half-hoping he had something. Strange stuff had happened, she didn't deny that. Tera and Oglo had believed in this guff. Oglo had claimed to see at a distance too, and hey, one of them had to have seen her notorious nudie-run on Tatooine somehow. If this was true, there would be no more naked hiking or scouting expeditions for her, more's the pity. How was a girl to get privacy?

While Quantros looked with his third eye, Lyla looked with her two good ones, donning diving goggles and dangling her head and tails off the side of the speeder-raft and in the water. Of course, there were no prints to follow, no broken branches, no litter or spoor sitting still some place. Tracking underwater was much harder needed a whole different set of signs: indentations in the loose sand where a Sedrian body might have settled, various kinds of sea creatures scared off by their passage. That's what she estimated, anyway. She figured Bishop Karak had come and gone with an escort, which upped the chances she might see a clue.

Jason says as he turns the vehicle slow in the water, trying to give at least Lyla the best chance she can to spot something. Quantros seems to have his eyes closed so there's very little to do to aid him.

The Renegade's Lair

Focusing his mind Quantros entered a meditative state. His mind extended out from his body, his mind buzzed as he sensed the abundance of life that coursed through the green ocean. First Quantros sensed those Force-users know by him. He sensed Bron and Tera to the northeast and moving swiftly away. Then as he searched outward for any sign of a disturbance in the Force he found none. There was no well of darkness or sinkhole of the darkside that Quantros could sense, Quantros knew however that even if there was some site of darkside power on Sedri he would have to be particularly close to it to sense its presence.

OOC You can't take 20 on a Use the Force check, you can take 10 however which will satisfy the DC15 for Sense Force. As a worthy note areas of darkside influence (if one exists) can only be detected within 1km.

With her head underwater half the time, Lyla could only wave her arms or tails in the air to point Jason where to go. When they didn't go that way, she realised he couldn't watch and steer at the same time, and pulled her gasping head out of the water to give him directions. 'Head, um, starboard? Never mind, just go left, thataway.'

The Renegade's Lair

The ocean stretched out, green seas reached out to the horizon like the giant flat mesas of Ryloth. Lyla could detect nothing to show them the way. Knowing the only way to navigate the planet was from the terrain beneath the surface of the water Lyla looked downward with her head submerged. In the water Lyla saw the map of the seabed. Underwater valleys and mountains existed. None however showed the Twi'lek any indication of sentient inhabitants, fish both large and small flitted passed as Jason cruised across the sea. Quantros felt no disturbances in the Force or any indication of dark side.

They saw no sign that anything had followed them from the Imperial base and they saw no sign of the AT-AT swimmer.

At last Lyla pulled her head out of the water, gasping and spluttering for breath. 'Well, that was even worse than I expected.' she complained. Tracking underwater so long after the fact had been optimistic, but that had felt utterly futile. She'd seen so many fish, which would have been worthwhile if this had been a wilderness survey mission. Stupid boring fish.

Sitting back, popping her ears open, she ran her hands up and down her lekku, trying to wring the seawater off the organs, which glistened golden in the sun. 'That's an idea.' Lyla agreed with Jason, for once thinking the same way. 'We'd have to return to the Gold though... We should've done that when we escaped. Eh, woulda coulda shoulda.' she shrugged. 'Maybe we should circle east a bit, see if we can pick up a sign there.'

Shaking a head-tail over the side, she looked over at Quantros. 'Yeah, he's the high priest's son. This place is basically a theocracy, so I wouldn't be surprised if Pek was a priest himself.'

But I felt another presence while we were on board the Imperial base. Now I can't sense that presence. What's more, I think the priests of this world have a connection to the Force. If true, then I should be able to sense our renegade's presence through the Force...unless he's using a technique to mask his presence. I need only concentrate harder in order to uncover him." Quantros be stretched out with his feelings, trying to scrutinize the Force of any signs of the renegade's presence.

This time, Lyla scrutinised Quantros as he meditated, growing sceptical again. He wasn't telling her anything new, or different, or that she couldn't work out herself. She wasn't surprised, but she was disappointed. Maybe she'd wanted to see something magical, something wondrous. Maybe she still hadn't. She could've made a dozen snarky comments, but she didn't have the energy to keep arguing, nor could she be so cruel. 'We're not here to chase phantoms,' she reminded Quantros. 'We're looking for Bishop Karak. Or anything strange. Look with your eyes.' She tossed him a pair of diving goggles, then donned her own, dipping her head underwater again.

At last, Lyla pulled her head out of the water again, pulling off her goggles. 'Yeah, you're right. This was worth a shot, but it's a long shot – very long.' she sighed, settling back into her seat. She might have called Qunatros out for failing to find Karak with the Force, but since she'd failed dismally as well, she wasn't about to get hypocritical. 'Let's get back to Fitsay.'

She lounged, drying her tails, one foot up on the side of the raft. What she wouldn't give to just lie in the sun for an hour. 'Alright, I'll bite – what did you sense on that base?' she quizzed Quantros, speaking hypothetically of course. 'If the priests are Force-users – and the priests of every faith have to use the Force – then Karak has to be too, as he's the ex-bishop. Maybe he's still stuck on the base? He can't have had much chance to leave before we sabotaged it, and we didn't see any Sedrians leaving.'

"But on that supply shuttle was a powerful Force user," Quantros interjected. "I felt their presence the moment the shuttle landed. If the Galactic Empire is anything like the Sith Empire, then their Force users are treated like royalty and high ranking commanders. I'm confident in my power to fight the one that's currently on that base, but I'd rather fight them on my terms. And since the only force users I can sense are Bron, Pek, Tera, and whatever the one on that base is, I feel confident saying I was wrong in my theory. None of this added up, not least because half the evidence was invisible to her. 'Look, all this is uncorroborated and speculative. Yesterday, you thought Pek was a renegade Force user. So let's not worry about it until we know it's something to worry about. That AT-AT swimmer is the real threat.'

Lyla realised they should keep watch for that AT-AT, and keep an eye out for Karak, just in case. The only way to do that here was to look beneath the waves, so she once again donned her goggles and breather and poked her head underwater.

Quantros gave Lyla a skeptical look. "Because all the troops and officers were ordered to report to the hangar to offload a bunch of supplies and parts, giving us the opening we needed to destroy the base generators. Not because they were greeting someone of great import who demanded the respect of every one on base. Right..." Nevertheless, Quantros moved to the side, looking out towards the water for signs of the AT-AT. Hopefully, they could stay under the radar, and not draw the attention of the Force user. An afterthought occurred.

"For the record, I was right in that Pek is a Force user." Quantros looked back, but it seemed that Lyla had already stuck her head back underwater. Sighing, Quantros stuck the helmet to his wetsuit on, and dove his head underwater as well.

'So if you tell me there's a bad guy over there, I should expect Aayla Secura.' she named the most famous Jedi she could think of, but realised Quantros wouldn't get it. 'Twi'lek Jedi, carbon-man.'

'And they were called for AT-AT activation – a dangerous and complex all-hands-on-deck operation.'

She plunged back underwater, figuring an argument would go more smoothly if they gave each other delays in responding.

The only Force users that aren't hiding are those strong in the Force but with no formal training, or those who are of the dark side and are hunting Jedi. In times like these, it's best to err on the side of caution. Especially since Whatever I'm sensing only made its presence Known after the ship landed. For all we know, I could be sensing the reborn form of Exar Kun." Quantros could understand the confusion generated by that statement. "Dark Lord of the Sith. Incredible duelist."

The Renegade's Lair

The oceans across Sedrian were huge, in fact it was more like one vast ocean. Small islands and rocks cropped up to interrupt the sea that flowed around the planet and spread life over it.

One thing that was alien to this planet was the Empire and the technology they brought. The party of Rebels that stayed to watch over this threat saw little and time passed slowly as they talked and sometimes argued. They waited. Lyla's searches and the speeder-raft's sensor picked up no movement of the AT-AT Swimmer nor did Quantros sense any movement of the Force presence on the base.

As Lyla dipped her head in the water again to survey the waters a dark shadow shot out of the reeds and rocks. The creature was bigger than the speeder-raft, fleshy spikes ran down its back and shoulders. A powerful tail beat to propel it through the water toward them and the webbed skin on its feet did not hide its claws.

OOC Initiative checks everyone. Initiative greater than 22 can act before the creature.

Knowledge Galactic lore and/or Life sciences for any attempts to identify the creature.

Just as a note Quantros only detected the presence of a Force User on the Imperial Base after the shuttle landed as that was when he chose to search for a Force user. One may or may not have been there before that. I only point this out for clarity and to avoid any possible future confusion.

The water creature was huge. Seawater sprayed across the deck of the speeder-raft as the creatures thrashed its fleshy spikes and its claws raked into the vehicle. Its tail beat the water into white foam and its jaw opened to grasp its prey. By the smallest of margins Quantros's reactions were fast enough to challenge the beast before it attacked.

A seasoned traveller and student of zoology Lyla recognised the creature as some variant of a Narglatch. She knew the Narglatch were solitary hunters and would on other planets stalk prey close to the shore's edge and drag them into the water to drown.

OOC Quantros can act first and then the Narglatch.

The Renegade's Lair

Lyla fired another shot after the narglatch, but was thrown by the rocking of the raft. 'Frack!' she spat in shock and horror as Quantros was dragged under as predicted. She couldn't let it get too far away, or too deep. 'I'm going after it!' Pulling her breather in place, holding her rifle tight to her chest, Lyla dived into the churning sea after the predator and its prey. She hoped there wasn't another.

Still worried about hitting Quantros if he fires at him directly, he tries to help Lyla with her shot by giving some covering fire, even though it's a creature, it must have some survival instincts.

The Renegade's Lair

The Narglatch tossed and turned as it clung to its captive. Quantros squirmed but was unable to break free of its grasp. The sea creature began to dive, taking its prey into deeper water. It aim was clearly to drown the surface creature. One thing the creature had no awareness of was the water-breathing suit that the ancient Jedi wore. Whilst he was trapped Quantros was in no immediate danger.

Firing at the fleeing Narglatch blaster bolts spat and sizzled into the green ocean. Then Lyla dove in after the creature. As she chased the creature the ocean filled with  a golden light. For Jason above the water's surface the seas all around him turned gold.

OOC Next round. Opposed check to escape for Quantros of 35. Quantros make a Use the Force check.

The golden light got Lyla's attention, but she had no time to stop and look around. Kicking her legs, tails streaming behind her, she dived hard after Quantros and the narglatch; it might not drown him, but it could well maul him to death first.

She swung her SG-4 forward; it was still switched to blaster mode, still more damaging and more likely to spook the narglatch. She fired, a blaster shot sizzling through the water, finally getting a shot on the beast.

Jason isn't sure what to do when the water around him turns completely gold, he looks around uncertainly, wanting to help out but also not wanting to leave behind their only method of transport.

"What the blazes.. Is this.. the golden sun thing?"

Of course there is nobody there to answer.

The Renegade's Lair

The golden sea enveloped the Narglatch and Lyla. The creature continued to plunge for the depth but Lyla her feet kicking and her head-tails streaming behind her chased it down. With the burden of carrying it's struggling prey the Narglatch couldn't get very far away from Lyla and it felt the burn of her blaster. The sea bubbled as the blaster burned and the Narglatch's blood left a cloud of red as it spread through the golden sea.

OOC Quantros is still Pinned he needs to make an opposed grapple to avoid it. The Narglatch's grapple check is 30.

Narglatch Swim speed is 4 so it is getting away from Lyla but very slowly!

'Hold on, Quantros, I'm coming!' Lyla called urgently through breather and comlink, lining up another shot at the narglatch. The Renegade's Lair

Blasted again the Narglatch's sleek fur and black skin was scorched and burnt. Lyla's skill and blessings of the goddess had favoured the Twi'lek but her success had not earned them victory yet. The giant beast roared in fury and flipped itself over. It tossed free its prey, leaving the unharmed Quantros floating the sea. The Narglatch then rushed at Lyla, one of its claws tearing into her flesh. Close up the Narglatch was terrifying, its feet possessing sharp claws and its teeth dangerous pointed.

OOC Lyla takes 16 damage from one of the Narglatch's claws.

Well, she'd made it drop Quantros, at least. Seeing the enraged narglatch now coming for her, Lyla paddled backwards furiously, not fast enough to avoid the claw shredding through swimsuit and orange skin. Bubbles escaped Lyla's breather as she screamed. Frantic, she tried to get her blaster rifle lined up, and got another glancing shot off at the sea-cat. Hopefully it couldn't take much more.

The Renegade's Lair

Unable to see much in the golden water, Jason decides to simply circle the area where he thinks his companions disappeared and hopes they can find their way back to him. His only other option is to abandon the vehicle and dive after them, which might cause them to leave the vehicle entirely, and that would be dangerous in the long run.

The Renegade's Lair

Erupting from the sea in a flume of water Lyla and the Narglatch battled on. Ocean spray soaked Jason as he circled around on the speeder-raft. Lyla blasted the Narglatch which elicited another roar. From below Quantros summoned the powers of the Force to grip the beast. A battle of the Force-user's mind versus the Narglatch's primal strength ensued. It was a close battle as the two adversaries struggled against one another, finally the Narglatch broke free of the powerful Force grip and frantically slashed its claws and bit at Lyla, savaging the Twi'lek.

OOC Lyla takes 14,15 and 30 damage from the Narglatch's claws and bite. Lyla must use a Force Point to prevent death or use a Destiny Point to evade the bite attack and be on 15 HP.

Quantros was very close to gripping the Narglatch!

The Renegade's Lair

OOC: Holy crap! I'll spend the Destiny point, as I've got a pretty poor destiny as a scout if I get chomped by an animal. Is that 15 hitpoints? Not 5? The math doesn't seem right. But I'll happily take 15. :)

In the face of the charging predator, Lyla folded inward, throwing up arms and legs to take the searing claw gouges, protecting vulnerable body, face, and tails. But that desperate effort didn't stop the savage maw snapping down over her – only an anguished oath to her goddess and rapid switching of suit propellers in reverse got her out of the way, just as fangs gnashed together inches from her head.

Legs pumping hard, she paddled her flippers, surging backwards through the water and streaming blood, and away from the narglatch as fast as possible. Move! she screamed at herself, blamed herself. Shoulda moved! Arms afire with agony, she aimed her blaster rifle down the length of her body at the beast, and fired off another shot into its snout. How much more could this thing bear? How much more could she?

OOC: Move: move the hell the away, Swim speed 3
Swift: catch Second Wind, heal 14 hitpoints

Jason considers trying to shoot the water creature, but Lyla is too close and there is too much blood in the water. So he instead turns the vehicle towards her and tries to help her on board the vehicle, where she might be at least a little safer.

The sea foamed as both combatants writhed in fury and desperation. It was Lyla's obstinateness that won out as she kicked back and blasted the great sea-creature full on. The creature let out a screech of pain as it flailed tail and claws, blood stained the ocean red as the creature drew its final breath.

The Renegade's Lair

That much. No longer compelled to fight for her life, Lyla let herself drift, almost dead, dazed with exhaustion and pain, her limbs and lekku dangling limply, amidst a sea of bloody foam. She could lie here forever and just forget everything.

At last, Quantros caught up, catching her hand, and pulled her upwards. Finally, they broke the surface together and saw sky again. Unresisting, she let Jason haul her on board the speeder-raft, at last recovering her senses, gasping for air not through a filter. 'Ow, Goddess damn it!' she winced, seeing the bloody raking claw wounds she'd taken, shredding her dive-suit and orange skin beneath.

Over a blood-soaked arm, she glared at Quantros 'You didn't have to attack it— oh, never mind...' She was too weary to argue or explain. She leaned over the side of the raft, lifting a cupped handful of seawater. 'Goddess of the winds – well, currents here, I suppose – forgive me. That beast shouldn't have died today. But I had to rescue one of my clan, and I couldn't leave a wounded predator to roam in madness. The rest was self-defence. The currents brought us into conflict, may the currents carry us apart in peace.' She let the seawater trickle out of her hands, the droplets blowing away in the wind of the surging speeder-raft.

When all three Rebels were back in the speeder-raft Quantros only glared at Lyla when she offered any rebuke for his actions. The ancient human did share some news however "to the northwest a great power cried out in fear when the seas turned gold" the Force-user mused deep in thought until he was interrupted by Lyla.

"I can put you into a deep trance" he offered "your wounds will heal rapidly whilst you rest".

Lyla tried to get her bearings on the surface of the sea; everything looked at the same in all directions without reference to what lay below. 'What's to the northwest? Fitsay?'

She looked oddly at Quantros. 'A trance? Eh, sure, I'll take it.' she agreed tiredly, settling down to rest until they returned to Fitsay. The cuts hurt like hell, and she doubted she could meditate or anything like that, but the bleeding had stopped and there was nothing critical.

Fearful great powers or not, Lyla told him to return to Fitsay, so that's what Jason intents to do. Once they're there they can decide what else they want to do. A course set for Fitsay the speeder-raft skimmed over the waves. It would likely take them a few hours to travel the roughly two hundred kilometres. Accepting of Quantros's offer the Jedi sat Lyla down and rested his hand on her head, he soothed her and uttered words that meant nothing to the Twi'lek but gave her a great sense of comfort and peace. Softly his words and mind connected with her and she fell into a deep state of unconsciousness.

OOC Lyla recovers 15 hit points over the journey. I may have to delay this thread slightly as the others defeat the last of the renegades or if they struggle you may arrive to rescue them!
