Strike Force: Shantipole

A return jump was simple maths for the slicing skills of Chu-Shkar and the rest of the crew were able to rest. It wasn't long before they reached the now familiar crystal planet of Isis. The Rebel base welcomed their return and the crew were summoned to see Commander Tallon for their debrief. T3-M8 chirruped happily in greeting to Klyn before Mon Mothma walked out from the commander's office and they were then ushered in.

The commander was holding a holo-disk as they entered and took from Lyla the recording Odrion had given her. He reviewed the disk and nodded his head thoughtfully "We've no time for formalities I'm afraid but my congratulations to you all. You have again done the Alliance a great service. It will be recorded on your records and I shall be henceforth promoting you to Lieutenant Rahn. Now I have another mission for you" he held out the holo-disk for Lyla to take "Lieutenant I need you and your crew to pick up Commander Ackbar, his team and the prototype starfighters they are working on. We need those fighters desperately. The Imperials new Nebulon-B escort frigates have put an end to any raids we can successfully make on any Imperial cargo convoys. These new starfighters will be capable of neutralising that threat. I'm transferring your unit to Commander Ackbar. You must hand this holo-disk directly to him and then follow his orders. Is that clear? Do you have any questions?"

Whatever Tera had done to her must have worked: Lyla slept for days and woke up feeling and looking as good as new, breathing easily and with no scarring or blaster burns. Then again, a razort claw swipe would've been something to show off for the scout.

She was surprised by the news – another promotion, so soon? Or rather, it was an upgrade, they'd made her officer instead. She'd come far from her humble beginnings. Lyla swallowed her embarrassment and feelings of being an impostor, and said 'Thank you, sir.'

She took the holo-disk, already thinking about the mission and seeing some problems. 'We're a small team with a small ship, and only a few of us are trained pilots. Will we need pilots for these starfighters, does Ackbar have them, or are we carrying the parts in our hold?'

The holo-disk taken Commander Tallon walked around his desk and took a seat. He made no motion for anyone else to do so and left the Rebels standing. His fingers tapped at his datapad as he considered Lyla's question "Ackbar has two prototypes. My data indicates you have three pilots capable of flying the starfighters. Ackbar's team will likely consist of trained pilots, I leave that for you to discuss with the commander".

The time it took for them to return was mainly dedicated to healing and resting, but Klyn also inventoried what they had salvaged from the AT-AT.

Thankfully they did take the time to heal while getting back as they almost immediately were summoned for another mission.
Klyn had barely the time to greet T3 and ask him to check the Gold, as he trusted the small droid to find anything they might have missed since the forced shutdown due to the Golden Sun power.

Lyla raised a good point about the pilots and the higher-up response was indeed well informed... but Klyn had hoped he could keep working on the keeping the Gold safe while someone else - a trusted one, of course - was doing the piloting.

He didn't really enjoy the fighters : too small, no room to do some real repairs...

But it was a small price to pay to be able to see... and most probably work on... the rumored prototypes.

Tera was back on her feet in only a few hours. All the bruising and blaster burns all faded to memory. She put all the other crew into healing trances on the way back. "Is any imperial activity expected during this mission, sir? Do they know of the new star fighters?"

Chu-Shkar had scrounged a droid brain and sensor package along with a vocal modulator from a droid he had found in the wrecked swimmer. Fortunately he was able on the trip back to construct a belt that could hold these and together with a spare datapad, he was able to make a translator for his speech.

As they went to the briefing, he was still fiddling with it. powering it up, he asked [Language unknown: "Fiet lothi roonro ro i teroulera ou ncdin? A ameereere estatilin llss e one trulin ioweus p ll dihenencsi."] What came out was: "ARE you grapping me to flu one sir? I don't usually homogenize in the small cockpit of a starfighter." In irritation Chu-Shkar smacked the contraption and growled in frustration. [Language unknown: "Leosat tinproons cean llek lo mass"] Which came out, "STILL wrecking out the insects sir."

Not offered a seat, and not big on the whole military discipline thing, even if a freshly made lieutenant, Lyla did what any twi'lek girl would do and perched her bum on the commander's desk. She tried to peep at the datapad. 'Okay, pilots are taken care of. Chu-Shkar can fly the Gold,' she glanced back to the Wookiee with a smile, glad she could understand him now, more or less, 'While Rynn and Jason can spell Ackbar's pilots as needed.'

She glanced down at T3-M8, mouthing a "hello" to their former droid, but hoping it was indeed the same T3. 'What about astromechs? Should we requisition some?' She knew what her first choice would be.

"Where is Commander Ackbar anyway?' Please not a water world, please not a water world, please not a water world...

"The starfighters have been developed and built in secrecy" Tallon answered Tera. He made no comment to the alternate growling of Ch-Shkar and the computer generated gibberish.

"The quartermaster will be able to provide supplies. Go see her before you depart. Commander Ackbar has his research base in the Roche asteroid field. I've had the coordinates transmitted to the Alabak's Gold astronavigation system."

As the commander sat at his desk his datapad beeped and he looked to the door "I have other business to attend to now Lieutenant . May the Force be with you."

OOC Galactic Lore, Life Sciences and Technology checks for whoever is interested in trying to recall any knowledge of anything.

As before I will allow individual or group requests for the quartermaster, an astromech or medical droid being around the top limit for a group request. Individual requests expected to be lower.

Rynn clapped his hands rubbed them together at the mention of fighter craft. He preferred flying the smaller quicker craft to the bigger freighters. Silently he made wondered what sort of fighters could take on Frigates. He snapped out of it when Lyla said his name. "Excellent El Tee. Can't wait to fly prototypes. We should get vaccum suits at least if we are going to be out there alot."

Lyla pointed to the waiting T3 droid; after all their missions, there was one astromech she'd trust above all other astromechs. 'Can we have T3-Mate back?' she made her final request to Tallon.

And: "May the Force be with you?" Why do people keep saying that? What did it even mean? Between obstructive and stubborn Jedi and only intermittently helpful corals, she still wasn't so sure this Force thing was a good thing to have with them. Life made so much more sense without it. 'Oh, maybe we'll get lucky. Goodbye, Commander. We'll bring back those starfighters.' She slid off Tallon's desk and led the team out the door. And away, to glory, or something.

'Ell Arr, you mean – oh, right.' she answered Rynn, remembering her new rank. 'Ugh, suits, again. Let's all get them, just in case we need to go outside and push... Mmm, and a helmet that fits my head...'

She clapped a hand on Chu-Shkar's furry back. 'Don't worry, Chu. We'll get you your blowfly.'

She thought about changing blaster rifles. She missed her old DC-15a, lost in an Imperial evidence vault somewhere, but the new SG-4 had been rather satisfying first time out of the box, compact and versatile.

The Roche asteroid field... the name rang a bell in Klyn's mind.

There was of course mention of secrecy, meaning trouble as someone was most certainly aware of what was going on.  Or they wouldn't have to move all those prototypes.

One of the good things from all that swimming adventure was that it had increase his skills for 0-G movements, which might prove useful if he had to get out of the ship to make repairs.

Klyn was quite happy that Lyla mentionned T3 because he had missed the little fellow.
Of course they had now a few skilled people to work with him on the Gold, but he would really appreciate having him back.

The device Chu-Shkar had spend most of his time working on still needed some fine tuning but it was a great improvement from his forced mutism during their last mission.

He was in fact impressed with the programming as a slight change in tune or frequency drastically changed the meaning of the roar. And the program was doing quite well.

At Lyla's last request Tallon gave T3-M8 an affectionate tap on the top of the droid's head "if you need him take him, make sure to bring him back in one piece. I've grown used to having him around", the droid beeped excitedly and wait for a decision from Lyla.

OOC T3-M8 is worth most of what the quartermaster will be able to offer so any further request will have to be on the modest side.

"I don't know much about them but what I heard make we very eager to get there.
Like you said, it's an insectoid race.  And more importantly, they are rumored to be very skilled in all maters related to ships and technological advances.

I am very much looking forward to see what the combined skills of the Mon Calamari and the Verpine created."

'I know, I kicked an anthill once.' Lyla answered ruefully. She recalled some interesting factoids she'd learned about Verpine. 'They have some kind of natural radio communication, and a hive-like total democracy. But they're pacifists, tech-focused... So we shouldn't have a problem with the Verpine. They might even be helpful to us, with parts or repairs, and they're sympathetic to the Rebellion... Provided we don't piss them off.' She didn't figure anyone in the current group would be antagonistic to the Verpine, or the Verpine to be antagonistic toward them, but if anything did happen, then Rynn was right – they'd make a lot of enemies very fast.

The Rebel base was its usual bustle of activity, the crew of the Alabak's Gold were greeted warmly and hailed as heroes by many, fellow soldiers, technicians and families alike.

At their arrival at the stockmaster's office she smiled at their return and checked her datapad "on loan. Eight underwater breathing suits and two SG-4 blaster rifles" she read aloud before she offered a welcome "Lieutenant Rahn the commander said to expect you. How can we serve you?"

Lyla had to admit – the heroes' welcome felt pretty good. She felt appreciated, like she was needed and was doing good work. More, meeting these people showed what was fighting for. So she waved back, called greetings, shouted encouragements and jokes, to build camaraderie.

At the quartermaster's office, she made an embarrassed face. 'I'm afraid those suits came back with a few holes in them... They match up with the ones in me.' She gestured for a droid to transport the container out of the Alabak's Gold. 'Maybe you can recover some parts off 'em.'

'But I really liked my SG-4. D'you think maybe I can keep it? Unless you have a better suggestion for vacuum work?'

On a datapad, she began filling out a requisition form. 'Otherwise, we're looking for a portable computer, a medical interface visor, vacuum suits – flight suits or space suits, which would you recommend? Enough for all of us, and some spares. And this T3 droid right here.' She pointed a thumb at T3-M8, then looked around the team. 'Anything else? Ah, we'll need more medpacs!'

At Lyla’s explanation the quartermaster let out a sigh “well there’s not a great demand for the swimsuits, we should be able to get them repaired for next time” she made a mark on the record on her datapad to indicate the damaged stock then returned her attention to Lyla. At the proffered blaster rifle the quartermaster instinctively began to check its condition with an easy efficiently she confirmed it was in working order before she laid it on the counter ”a good rifle, reliable in nearly any environment. I’ve got maybe a couple of choices you might be interested in” she walked among the shelves and crates behind her counter and returned pushing a repulsorsled with a stack of seven boxes.

The first box was dented and corroded on the corners “not much demand for this model, a rifle for someone who appreciates precision and marksmanship” she lifted from the box various parts of different sizes. Quickly she assembled the parts into long-barrelled slugthrower rifle "Czerka Adventurer, designed for high accuracy at long range. The firing chamber fills with a rich oxidizer as the bullet fires. Also can be packed away small" she added as she disassembled the rifle as quickly as she'd built it. Packed away she pushed the old box out of the way and showed Lyla a newer and more common model, what looked at first glance like a regular blaster pistol "DC-17m Interchangeable Weapon System, common during the Clone Wars. Can be switched from rifle to sniper to anti-armour. You take you pick"  she laid out three different attachments designed to be fitted to the muzzle of the pistol like weapon. The quartermaster looked up before she could pack away the ICWS as Chu-Shkar growled and his translator yelled. Interrupted she nodded and picked up another crate and revealed the familiar looking but uncommon weapon, a fusion of modern and ancient technologies "Wookiee bowcaster. I don't think I ever seen one fired outside of the practice range. You sure you know how to handle it" she asked as she put the bowcaster on the desk for the team to examine.

Other boxes were opened. A backpack which contained a portable computer. A high tech piece of headwear and goggles, a medical interface visor. Four orange flight suits of varying sizes. The last box contained six fastflesh medpacs, the quartermaster shook her head as she pushed them across the counter "don't tell the commander" she whispered as the cost of the requisitions were already over their given allowance "so you used all twenty medpacs you took on the last mission? That must have be one ugly fight" she said with a note of respect and awe.

'Ooh.' Lyla looked over the rifles on offer with keen interest and expert appraisal, picking them up, testing weight and balance and feel, and checking over the specs compared to what she was used.

The Czerka Adventurer: 'Nice, but I figure I supply the accuracy, while I always need more stopping power. Slugthrowers are noisy too.' she decided, not sold on it. 'Besides, I've simply got nothing to wear with it.' she added in wry irony and put-on high-class tones.

The DC-17m Interchangeable Weapon System: 'Oh, momma like!' she gasped, eyes bugging and tails almost on end. 'I only saw this in catalogues, but the cost— After what I did to earn my DC-15a, I didn't dare try for the DC-17m... Mmm, standard blaster rifle, beautiful sniper option, and, ah! grenade launcher... I think I've found a new girl's best friend... And you'll let me keep this? Because I'm not sure I can give it back.'

Bowcaster: 'Now that is a strange and amazing weapon.' she said admiringly, looking over Chu-Shkar's fancy crossbow. Using it well was beyond her though.

She counted the flight suits, and questioned 'Uh, there's five of us right now, six if Jason comes, more if we pick up tagalongs. And we'll probably need some spares... And have you got a helmet that will fit a twi'lek's weirdly shaped head? Seriously, I can't even wear hats.'

'It was one ugly fight.' Lyla agreed with meaning, though she wouldn't admit it if she had a few spare still. Supply might not give them any, expecting them to use up everything. 'It was one ugly dog too.'

Klyn kept his own heavy pistol but had a few modifications in made.
Those he could do while they traveled with the various parts they had salvaged from the wreckage.

But for the moment he reached the quarter master with a log of his own.

"Here are a few things we got from 'generous' imperials while we worked on the last mission.  I hope it will be enough to get our balance back into the positive."

he said while Lyla checked her new prized possession.

"One SG4, one imperial suit - might come in handy for infiltration, one unorthodox harpoon pistol - you might want to check it, quite an 'at the moment' inspiration.  And something a bit too big to get it here: a Waveskimmer.

It's currently on the Gold, but since we will need some more room..."

He raised an eyebrow at the mention of the spent medpacs.

"Well, we hall got quite an handful of new scars... big ones..." he added, his hand massaging his side without him thinking about it.

A flight suit wasn't offered to Rynn who already had an adequate suit of his own "that's the best I can do. Supplies are short, especially essentials like flight suits" she explained.

The Czerka Adventurer was packed away and the DC-17m was left for Lyla to keep "take it. You'll need to find some grenades whilst in the field. We haven't had any in store for a while" she explained.

She tested the stance and aiming posture, remarking 'The reviews were right – the left-side energy clip placement is odd. I'll have to reverse my holster.' Some of the shine was already coming off the weapon, but Lyla wasn't about to suffer buyer's remorse just yet. After all, she hadn't paid for it. She'd have to practice with it on the flight.

Putting it down, Lyla tested the plus-sized helmet over her tails (long, sexy, but really inconvenient at times), coiling them inside the hood. 'Okay, so no spares. Just make sure there's plenty of patches and puncture repair kits.'

Relieved that no more stock would be needed the quartermaster went back to checking her stock as the new supplies were loaded on to the Alabak's Gold. Refuelled and restocked the starship was ready for launch. The astronav computer had been programmed with the coordinates for near to the Roche Asteroid field. Before the hyperspace jump T3-M8 checked the coordinates and course and once the droid was satisfied they were once more travelling the galaxy to a new destination.

The irregularities caused by the asteroid field meant that they would not be able to jump directly to the Rebel base. They would have to travel at sublight speed for the last couple of hours. The Alliance signal receiver onboard the Alabak/s Gold would be able to pick up the broadcasting base-homing device as they got closer and help them find the Commander Ackbar's base.

Before she left, Lyla donated the propulsion pack she'd pilfered from the downed ISC vessel. Only good in water, it had done its job on Sedri, and was now surplus to requirements. It went well with the Seatrooper armour they'd taken as well.

After stowing her new gear, Lyla wandered into the cockpit to oversee the launch preparations, hearing Chu-Shkar's somewhat contradictory report. Lieutenant. It really sounded good on her. She hoped that her parents would've been proud of her. 'Don't worry, I got the gist of it. Take us up when you will, Mister Chu-Shkar. Oh, and when port control gives permission to launch, of course.'

She checked the projected course, reciting to make sure she understood it 'Okay. We're dropping out of hyperspace outside the asteroid field and going in at sublight. Fair enough. The walk will do us good and give us time to look around first.'

'And give us some time to get ready. I've been training, I'm rated for heavy weapons now, but I need some practice on the Alabak's turrets. You know, now I know how they work.'

OOC: How long does it take to get there? In the movies they always made it seem instantaneous, except the first time when the Millennium Falcon  was going to Alderaan.

On the way to their new destination, Klyn spent most of his time on the various weapons that went under his scrutiny.

He carefully dismounted them, checked every piece and made the tiniest, but vital, transformation to improve the efficiency of the targeting enhancers.

+1 accuracy for Lyla's weapon, Rynn's weapon, Klyn's weapon.

Chu-Shkar will mostly spend time working on his translator, though he will have Klyn check his Bowcaster, just to verify it's in working order, and doesn't need repairs.

No need to upgrade it yet.

Otherwise he'll spend most of his non piloting time on the computer, getting it set up for his style. Setting up macro's and installing/writing personal programs for his own style of slicing.

Lyla slipped away from the cockpit, making a quick tour of the ship to check in with each of the crew, confirming they were ready and able for the impending mission. Not that it was necessary – she trusted her team and knew their skills well enough now – but she wanted to be a good CO. If anyone had a question or concern, she wanted them to feel they could come to her.

At the workshop, she found Klyn. 'Hey, Klyn, thanks for these weapons mods. We'll need them with the hard targets we keeping going up against.' She examined the gyroscopic stabilisers and auto-targeting enhancers he was installing in her DC-17m ICWS, then left him to it, not wanting to interrupt too much.

Finally, she climbed up into the dorsal turret and settled into the gunner's seat. She spent some time familiarising herself with the controls, now having some more formal training courtesy of Alliance instructors, then went through a training sim, firing weak lasers at asteroids to improve her accuracy. She'd have a better chance hitting TIE fighters now, but she still didn't want any to show up on this mission.

The Alabak's Gold was not a slow starship. It was designed as a fast moving jumpship. The Rebels however often had to make multiple jumps to hide their whereabouts and disguise their trail. Extra calculations were required with the Roche asteroid field disturbing the hyperspace fields. The extended hyperspace journey allowed the Rebels to rest and engage themselves in leisure pursuits or to pursue their own projects. Klyn was busy with repurposing the scavenged parts into tools and weapons the crew would find useful. Chu-Shkar was busy getting himself accustomed to the Mon Calamarian jumpship and Lyla took her responsibility for the crew seriously as she checked on them all.

The personalisation of the sensor array had Chu-Shkar tuned into the ship and aware of what was going on around it. The Wookiee was waiting for the Alliance signal receiver to start blinking so they could plan their approach when another sensor was tripped. They had incoming. Chu-Shkar tweaked the receiver and picked up the objects on the full-spectrum transceiver. Imperials, three TIE fighters! The sensors also detected high energy concentrations in the TIEs weapon ports, they must have also detected the Alabak's Gold and be preparing for an attack run.

OOC Initiative checks please.

Chu-Shkar, using the Gold's internal translator he had set up, barked out a clear message of incoming TIE fighters. It went through the ships intercom, so anywhere they had a speaker heard it clearly. He activated the shields and began maneuvering in anticipation of a dogfight.

Couple of questions, One can I see what type of TIEs they are? and are they in hyperspace? Or had we dropped out at the asteroid field?

Also, What skills will I need to roll for evasive maneuvers? I'm assuming piloting, but are there others?

Lyla had been working her way through the training simulator with success when the TIE fighters popped up on her display. 'Eh? I'm only up to asteroids, TIE fighters are next level.' she complained, tapping the screen to see if the virtual TIE fighters would go away. They didn't. They were not virtual.

Then she heard Chu-Shkar's warning over the intercom. 'Oh, poodoo.' At least she was already in the turret. Hurriedly, she began switching off the simulator and reverting to combat operation. 'Evasive manoeuvres and counter-attack! Bearing 027 mark 183!' she ordered over the intercom.

"Stang stang stang." Rynn said as he bolted from his room where he'd been resting waiting for his chance to fly a star fighter again. He had been willing to let the rookie pilot Chu-Shkar take the sticks to get them to the base, but he wasn't ready for combat yet. "Get out of the seat Chu!" Rynn called through his voice amplifier, dialing up to a shout as he ran through the hall to the cockpit. He jumped into the pilot seat and prepared for maneuvers that he was worried he was a little rusty on. He grabbed the radio as he sped toward the incoming craft. "We engaging or should I prep for another jump LT?"

As soon as Tera raised the shields the TIE fighters which had surrounded the Alabak's Gold began to unleash laser fire upon the jumpship. In the cockpit Chu-Shkar started jamming the TIE communications. Rynn proved his ability as a pilot as he swerved the cumbersome starship around to avoid two of the laser beams, only one of the lasers hitting, perhaps enough to save all their lives.

Lyla was prepared for the battle but her aim was just not good enough at this range and against such quick and nimble targets. Klyn who hurried to strap himself into the turret managed to score a hit but it wasn't enough to destroy the starfighter. The TIE fighters began to circling their prey in a vulture like fashion but the Rebel starship was not harmed again yet.

OOC TIE/rc have fly 6 squares, Alabak's Gold fly 2 squares. So the TIE can dictate the range and keep it at 10 squares (long range). I haven't uploaded a new map but the TIE will be spread equally around the Alabak's Gold, imagine 12 o'clock, 4 o'clock and 8 o'clock.

Vehicular Combat negated first TIE hit. Vehicular combat is a Reaction so Rynn can take an action as well. Second hit scored 88 damage against the Alabak's Gold, which puts -1 to everyone's Pilot and Gunnery checks.

Rynn's Pilot checks will be -1 (Rynn's Pilot skill +10 minus size modifier -10 minus -1 condition track), Gunners will be -9 (-10 long range -1 condition track + 2 Intelligence).

Shields have been lowered to SR20.

The starship shook. Machinery groaned as it strained to cope with the damage. It was unthinkable for Klyn to sit idly as the Alabak's Gold suffered. The ship's engineer unstrapped himself from the turret and threw himself into engineering, offering his aid and ministrations to the ailing starship.

Lyla's gun tracked the Imperial TIE, her shot was a close but not close enough. The TIEs returned fire but despite how rattled Rynn was and how less than perfect his flying the Imperials failed to strike again. Perhaps partly due to the interference from Chu-Shkar as he transmitted readings of ghost ships into the TIE fighters targeting computers.

Quick to take the second turret from Klyn the ship doctor and Jedi strapped in and found her focus easily. Tera's finger depressed the trigger and the TIE fighter exploded in a ball of fire.

OOC T3-M8 successfully rerouted the ship's power and removed the condition track penalty. Tera replaced Klyn in the twin cannon.

The TIE squadron had proven to be a dangerous complication for the Rebel crew. The Rebels had overcome many dangers by working together and it was that efficiency and their guts which brought them victory again. Rynn spun the Alabak's Gold over and blasted at the damaged TIE. The starfighter exploded. The final TIE darted away from the ship, trying to use its speed to full advantage, it was about to move out of range as Lyla swivelled around in the turret. She lined up the targeting arrows and a gentle squeeze of the trigger and the last TIE fighter disappeared in a colourful fireball. Sparkling fragments fly by to fade away into the silence of space.

The sensor array detected no more starships but many more warning lights blinked and beeped as the ship's computer reported the damage the ship had suffered in the space battle.

Drifting closer to the Roche Asteroid Field the ship's receiver picked up the homing device on the Rebel base. They just needed to fly into the asteroid field to reach the base.

"of course, until we reach our destination, where they certainly have all the needed installation to make heavy repairs, it will only be 'first aid' patching...

Lyla breathed a great sigh of relief as the last TIE disintegrated under her fire. It had been a very close call. 'Nice shooting, everyone.' she congratulated, trying to maintain team confidence after this near-death experience. 'They got some lucky shots on us early on, but we held our own and gave back more. It just shows we can't get too cocky, even with TIEs.' she concluded for a positive spin.

She thought back over recent events and what they'd learned. 'So, we know they have a frigate on the edge of the system. And we do not want to be here when they come looking. Rynn, Chu, take us on a stealth route away from this position and into the asteroids. Watch the sensors, we don't want the Imps tracking us to Shantipole.' she ordered, then reflected 'Unless someone has a better idea?' Lyla didn't want to be the kind of leader who controlled everyone and didn't take ideas; she wanted her whole team to be free to speak their mind.

Junk and trash was ejected from the airlock and blasted by the laser cannons for good measure. Their decoy left the Alabak's Gold fell into the asteroid field. The Roche asteroid field was a cluster of rocks, varying in size from tiny meteorites to large planetoids, circling a small yellow sun.

It was an extremely old field. Once Rynn had the starship inside it was rather orderly and predictable not a whirling storm of space debris. Rynn's difficulty was plotting a course through it without entering an area too dense in debris to pass through whilst evading meteorites as they suddenly bounced toward them.

Patiently he flew them toward the beacon and the Rebel base. Monitoring the sensor array Chu-Shkar detected various indications of life in the asteroid field, possibly mynocks or evener bigger life form like space slugs.

The beacon took them to an hourglass shaped asteroid. Points of light penetrated the asteroid's outer crust, highlighting air vents and repulsor-beam projectors. When the  chunk of rock spun around the entrance in its side became visible. A hangar bay and several figures could be seen moving around within its lit interior.

The ship com unit crackled to life "Freighter, identify yourself immediately and state your business".

It was a tense and anxious flight through the Roche field. Even once Lyla realised the asteroids were relatively predictable, she still kept close look out for pursuing TIEs, in case the Imperials hadn't been fooled by their garbage trick. She was aware the Verpine might all show up, wondering what was going on in their system. Even the weird alien life dwelling in these asteroids could prove more than a nuisance.

So it was a relief when they finally came to the Shantipole base. Here they could stop, repair, and learn what the cruk was going on. 'Thanks, Chu.' she said, them commed to the base. 'This is the jump freighter Alabak's Gold, here for a pick-up?' she introduced cautiously, not wishing to admit to their mission or Rebel connection over a channel that could be surveilled by the Imperials outside. The recognition codes would discreetly reveal the truth to those who should know.

The codes sent by Chu-Shkar were successful in getting the starship cleared to land. The hangar's small size and the rapid rotation of the asteroid makes landing tricky but Rynn brought the damaged Alabak's Gold in safely.

The ship's com invited the crew to stretch their legs and wait for an escort once they were landed. The small hangar bay appeared functional and efficient. A control tower jutted over the deck carved and hollowed out of the natural rock. While the ceiling rises high overheard the walls remain uncomfortably close. A mixture of instrument panels, cooling veins and patches of natural reddish brown stone covered the bay walls. A wide stone passage lead away from the chamber.

When the first Rebel steps out from the starcraft they are greeted by an excited squeak. Three tall insectoids scurry from the passage toward them.

"Greetings members of the friendly Rebel hive. My name is Suskafoo. You have a most interesting starcraft" when he speaks Suskafoo twitches and chirps excitedly, its antennae moving in time. He speaks in unaccented Basic.

The other two Verpine chittered and chattered in excitement as they examined the Alabak's Gold, somewhere among the garbled alien speech pattern Lyla picked up that the pair were are asking her highly technological questions about the starship's design and the technologies used.

Their curiosity had them opening hatches and pulling at wires as Klyn showed them the starship "why are the ship engines configured in anti axis and induced with dampeners? It would be better to configure them cross lateral and install separate inductors" the Verpine chirped "we can have the modifications completed in no time" the other added and pulled a handful of wires from a hatch and begins to reconnect them.

Suskafoo was agitated by Lyla's statement, his antennae trembled "no, we did not know that the enemy hive was so close" he worried. As he said it another figure emerged form the tunnel. Dressed in a simple brown tunic and matching cape. The figure's head resembled a four-tentacled squid. He heard Suskafoo's words and uttered three sharp sounds. Suskafoo chirped an angry reply, waved his antennae at Lyla then exited the chamber.

The two Verpine enjoyed their tour of the Alabak's Gold. Both wiggled their antennae excitedly through out and chirped rapidly at each other. When they saw the gathering outside the ship they rushed off to follow Suskafoo into the tunnels "we would be honoured to help complete any repairs or modifications after you have seen the Commander" they promised Klyn.

The outburst from Chu-Shkar and the questions from Tera were met with sullen silence from the Quarren. There was no amity between the pirate and the Quarren. Neither spoke further as the team moved through the base. There were three side tunnels before they reached the communications centre, where control consoles lined the walls. A large clear board stand in the centre of the room. Numerous lines traced across the board showing the trajectory of Roche's larger asteroids.

Through the communications centre they entered the command centre. It was a large circular chamber. The walls covered in monitors and control panels. A holo-projector tank filled the floor space on the far side of the chamber.

Across the room hunched intently over a display terminal is Suskafoo and a Mon Calamari. The pirate led you to toward them "Commander Ackbar. These are the messengers."

Strike Force: Shantipole

'Nice place you've got here.' Lyla had said cheerily to fill the uncomfortable silence, in complete irony against the bland asteroid tunnels and the sour atmosphere Glek generated. On the other hand, maybe she shouldn't antagonise him further.

In the command centre, she gazed around then took in the Mon Calamari. 'Commander Ackbar?' she confirmed, taking the holo-disk from her pocket. They didn't have time for small-talk. Were they really so in the dark here? She nodded in thanks to Rynn's report. 'I'm Lieutenant Lyla Rahn. Commander Tallon ordered us to find you and give you this holo-disk directly,' Lyla passed it over, completing that part of the mission. At least that was easy enough. 'Then collect you, your team, and the prototype starfighters and take you back to our base. Apart from that, our unit is to follow your orders. Sir.' she concluded, mustering as much military protocol as she could guess at.

The Commander shook his head at Rynn's news "that is bad news you bring my friends" the Mon Calamari expresses his concern "the Imperials this close puts us all in danger". Lieutenant Glek added a biting comment of his own, his sullen mood not improving "they were probably tracked coming here".

Commander Ackbar blinked his big eyes at the comment but took it no further as he then listened to Lyla report. He walked over to the holo-projector, currently displaying the Roche Asteroid Field "let's see what you've brought Lieutenant Rahn" he said. He inserted the disk into the machine. The field disappeared, replaced by a woman in a flowing white gown. Mon Mothma, Supreme Commander of the Alliance.

The holo-image spoke "Greeting, old friend" she said warmly "as you predicted, the Nebulon-B escort frigate has put an end to our supply raids. Your report that the Shantipole Project nears completion could not have come at a better time."

"The rest of this message is for your eyes only, Commander Ackbar, and for the agents who delivered it to you. Please pause the holo-disk until all other personnel have left the area."

Ackbar reached out and tapped the controls on the projector tank and Mon Mothma's holo-form froze. Pollard and Suskafoo left immediately.

Klyn wanted nothing more than to get back to his ship, but they obviously needed to meet the one in charge here.

He was a bit surprised to see a Quaren as he thought they and the moncalamari didn't appreciate each other very much.

And it took only seconds for him to understand why, if that Glek fellow was an average member of his species.

He did, however, nearly felt bad for him as Chu-Shkar put him back in place.

He listened to the exchange with The Commander and noticed Glek didn't move.

"I believe you are neither Ackbar nor a member of our team..." he began.
"Are you waiting for something, maybe?"

Prompted by Klyn the Quarren walked out of the command centre. Once he had left the chamber Commander Ackbar continued the message.

"The Alliance fleet  is assembling in the Pothor system. Proceed there immediately with your design team and your two prototype B-wings. Upon arrival you will assume the rank of Admiral. You first duty is to organize a mass production system for the new B-wing."

Mon Mothma continued "to the agents who delivered the disk. Thank you for your service; the Alliance owes you a great debt. I must now ask you to perform another service for us. You must safeguard Commander Ackbar, escorting him and his project to the rendezvous point. The location codes are embedded at the end of this holo-disk. Do not take this duty lightly, our agents suspect that there is an Imperial informer on the commander's staff."

"To Commander Ackbar. Allow these agents to bring you, your team, and the prototypes to the rendezvous point. Trust them as I do. I apologize for the heavy-handed precautions, but we could not risk interception of this message. The new starfighter is too crucial to the survival of the Alliance. Proceed to the rendezvous point with all speed, and may the Force be with you."
Hyperspace jump coordinates replace Mon Mothma's image, then the holo-disk shut off.

Lyla had a couple of comebacks for Glek, but settled on 'They must've gotten pretty good at tracking, to get here ahead of us.' She did not want any resentful officers trying to lay the blame for the fall of Shantipole on her crew, so she wanted to make sure to cover their collective tails while she could.

She gazed up at the flickering holo-image, seeing Mon Mothma herself. 'Huh.' she breathed. 'I always thought she'd be... a moth.'

When the room cleared out, and even Glek begrudgingly sloped off, Lyla took a quick look around for straggling technicians or droids. She hoped this wouldn't take long. She remembered Glek screaming in her face, and couldn't wait to wash off the stench of seafood breath.

Then she heard the message. Oh, goddess. This was major. The fleet was being mustered, surely in readiness for a large-scale battle. And they had to get its admiral and fancy new ships into the field. This was crucial to the survival of the Rebel Alliance. And it was all on her tails. She swallowed, trying to find the still point inside herself and the sense she could endure, work through, and overcome any challenge. 'Alright, you heard the Moth lady, but this is even more urgent now a frigate's already here. We're bugging out. Chu-Shkar, you protect those coordinates and compute a safe course.' She ejected the holo-disk and passed it to the Wookiee. 'Klyn, you'll probably want to oversee repairs. Liaise with the Verpine and Ackbar's people. Nothing matters except getting the Gold good to go, to fly fast and hit hard.'

'Tera, you know the Imperials and have good insight.'
She meant the Force, but wasn't going to say it. 'I think you and I should screen the staff for this informant. I think I know who to start with...'

'Commander Ackbar, are these B-wings ready to fly? I know you have your own pilots, but I'd like ours to practice on them in case we need back-ups.'

'Otherwise, we need to start loading all personnel and valuable and sensitive equipment into our ship. Do you have a transport of your own here?'

'We need to take or destroy everything that might contain valuable data, so the Imperials don't get their hands on it. Can we blow up the base? Preferably with Imperials inside?'

She turned to face Ackbar directly, aware she took orders from him now and he was still in charge here. 'Are these preparations good for you, Commander?'

Rynn was bouncing on his toes as he listened to the message being played. Prototype star fighters... of a caliber that it's existence should somewhat level the playing field. When Lyla mentioned her pilots taking the star fighters, he raised his hand to the commander indicating he'd be one of them. That was when the shakes set in. It wasn't nerves, and Rynn knew he couldn't stop it. It had happened fairly often in his time as a pilot. When given the chance for something new and exciting to fly a nervous energy settled on him. Like an equus before a race.

He snapped back out of this thoughts to hear his commander suggesting to Akbar to blow up the base. He rocked back on his heels a bit and waited for the response.

The Mon Calamari began the download and wiping of information from the Commander Centre computers "the B-wings have been completed. They are held at the Research Station, another asteroid base. We have three transports here" Ackbar responded to the questions directed at him "then we must begin the evacuation" he agreed with Lyla's suggestion. 'A fly on the wall, huh?' Lyla remarked with grin at the expense of Chu-Shkar's dodgy translation. 'Bear in mind, a spy might not want to give the exact coordinates, not until they're off the base. Unfazed by the sudden urgency or the fast change in their mission the Rebels coordinated themselves. Lyla asked questions, Chu-Shkar went to interrogate the computers, Klyn planned the repairs to the Alabak's Gold, Rynn ready to find the spy or make a quick get away and Tera to check the com unit.

All was as it always seemed to be for the Rebel crew. Ahead of the Imperials but only one step ahead. Moving into their positions they worked as a team then warning sirens screamed across the base. A voice boomed from the command centre com unit Tera was operating "Hangar bay to Commander Ackbar! Sir an unidentified craft is approaching this asteroid. It's closing fast and it doesn't respond to our signals. Wait... it's an Imperial assault shuttle! Repeat, an Imperial..."

Two explosions rocked the base, showering dust and small rocks on everyone. The screens monitoring the asteroid's interior flashed white and flicked off. Ackbar turned to Pollard "there no way we can hold out against an attack. We just don't have enough soldiers. Give the emergency evacuation signal."

Pollard complied, he shouted into his com unit "emergency evacuation. All personnel immediately report to the life boat bay. This is no drill" the base shuddered as the assault shuttle continued its bombardment. With each explosion the light flickered ominously.

Ackbar then turned to Lyla "if I don't retrieve the two man B-wing configuration files from this computer then everything we've worked for will be lost. I need more time".

Strike Force: Shantipole

The Imperial Stormtroopers continued to pour out of the boarding tube. The small crew of the Rebel's offered enough resistance to prevent them spreading out to overwhelm the base. Lyla's rifle spat blast-fire from one direction and Rynn's rifle from another. Caught in the crossfire three of the stormtroopers fell almost as soon as their boots hit the hangar floor. The surviving two crouched and returned fire. Closer and more accurate Rynn was shot with enough force to almost knock him off his feet.

Despite the Rebels success the battle was not going in their favour as another five stormtroopers emerged and set up a defensive line behind the surviving two.

By the heavy blast doors Tera kept out of sight and ready to close the eighteen inch thick enhanced titanium blast door when the Rebels needed to make an getaway.

OOC Rynn takes 16 damage. There are now 7 stormtroopers in hangar.

From behind Tera heard running, had the Stormtroopers already surrounded them? Then she heard the gruff voice of Pollard as the pirate sidled up beside her, blaster pistol in one hand and grenade in the other. he looked at the battle in the hangar and Stormtroopers filling it up "that shuttle could be transporting two full platoons. We should back up and close the blast doors. There's life boats on the other side of the base" he told her.

Lyla swore explosively, angered that they'd have to fall back and let the Stormies made a beachhead, but she knew this wasn't a fight they could win. From the skirmish outside to having their precious Gold stolen, and now losing the base, this day had rapidly gone from bad to worse to bloody terrible, and had a feel of desperate finality and failure to it. She hoped this wasn't going to be how it ended.

'Move your tails outta here!' she shouted, rising and running from her place of cover behind the trashed hopper. Dashing swiftly across the deck under raining fire, returning a wild spray of her own, she skidded wildly through the blast doors. 'Get them doors down!' she urged, moving to hold the position while the others worked the doors.

This felt less like a victory and more the first step on an inevitable path to defeat.

Then she remembered the layout of the hangar, and how Rynn had gone around to an adjoining room to flank them. 'Rynn!' she realised, sprinting off to rejoin and aid her team-mate. On the way, she frantically loaded a fresh power-pack into her rifle.

Strike Force: Shantipole

Hurrying away from the hangar and invading stormtroopers the Rebels returned to the Command Centre. Lyla punched some buttons on the blast door, it closed but did not lock. As Ackbar and Chu-Shkar finished retrieving the files Lyla explored the back room. The room she entered was hollowed out of the asteroid rock, the floor was made of thick bases of reinforced permacite. Dozens of pipes lead out of the a massive atmosphere generator which dominates the room. Three airlocks lead to the surface of the asteroid.

In the Command Centre Klyn assesses a map of the Rebel facility.
    1. Atmosphere Generators.
    2. Command Centre.
    3. Communications Centre.
    4. Living Quarters.
    5. Hangar Bay.
    6. Rec Area.
    7. Main Power Generators.
    8. Auxiliary Power.
    9. Storage.
    10. Repulsor Beam Generators.
    11. Medical Centre.
    12. Life Boat Bay.
    13. Auxiliary Command Centre.

Klyn's knowledge allows him to deduce that sabotage of the Main Power Generators would destroy the base or sabotage of the Repulsor Beam Generators would result in asteroids smashing and pulverising the bases into pieces.

OOC See map above for reference to locations.

'Atmosphere generators.' Lyla reported, returning from the back room. She'd tried switching them off an an added impediment to the Imperial occupation; the base had enough air for a little while, and they didn't intend to stay there that long.

She had another go at actually locking the blast door to the Command Centre, with less success, and asked Klyn 'So, what's the plan for blowing this joint? Tell me don't have to be in here when it happens.'

"What's that?" he asked Chu. "Getting homesick?"
But before he could go further on that road, Lyla was back and it was time to explain his plan.

"Well, I could turn that very fine, but completely lost, base into quite a deadly trap for any imperial still on board.

I think we can safely assume we are the last one leaving so if we close each door behind us, we won't trap any innocent and it will give me the time I need to disable the repulsors protecting this big asteroid from the others around it."

he explained while giving a hand in closing the door.

"I will go straight there while you close the few doors between here and the intersection SW from here. I will meet you there as soon as I'm done.

If you are confident enough in that area, I wouldn't mind Chu's help, by the way."

"Sir it might be a good idea for someone or possibly everyone to head to here," Pointing towards the Auxiliary Power Generators, "And use space suits to walk along the surface of the asteroid to here." Indicating the main hanger bay. "That gives us the ability to retrieve the Gold. Lifeboats won't do us much good if the Empire has ship out there. But with the Gold we can escape."

In the interest of my sanity unless I am saying something specifically important for translation I'm going to type in Vox box setting for communications going forth. The second part of this post was impossible for me to do in the way I was previously.

'Alright.' Lyla agreed to Klyn. She had another go at locking the blast door linking the Living Quarters and the Communications Centre, wishing she'd studied all this technical stuff instead of interpretative dance, and that she could just smash the panel with the butt of her rifle instead. She was having more luck now, trying to tell it there was a atmosphere breach and it should lock to prevent catastrophic damage.

She was surprised by Chu-Shkar's suggestion, then realised 'Cruk, you weren't there – the Gold was stolen, it's gone from the Main Hangar. We only have Ackbar's ships now.' The loss of the Alabak's Gold still hurt, she just hadn't had time for it to sink in. She'd lost a lot of gear and mementos too.

With some assistance from Klyn the blast door between the command centre and living quarters are sealed. The stormtrooper would break through the blast door at the hangar soon and be on their tails. Klyn headed toward the repulsor beam generator. Klyn estimated that once he shut down the beams that shielded the base it would be destroyed in about ninety seconds. Everyone else just had to get those life boats ready.

Their plan to escape in the lifeboats was simple and the majority of the Rebels ran to make their escape. Most Verpine and technical staff were gone, although they saw a few rushing head in the directions. Lyla set to obstruct the Imperials at every opportunity, closing blast doors and trying to set locks on them, without the security codes her attempts were ineffectual.

Klyn reached the Repulsor Beam Generators, three tall, silver cylinders, interconnected by a maze of pencil-thin filaments. A computer control panel would grant the engineer access and a chance to destroy the asteroid.

The rest of the Rebels led by Lyla ran through the Medical Centre. The room consisted of eight beds, one bacta-tank and a curtained off corner.

'Now you tell me.' Lyla muttered sourly as she realised her attempts to lock the blast doors were not only pointless, but ineffectual. Some instructions sure would be nice. 'Hey, Ackbar! Transmit me the security codes!' she demanded irritably of the admiral, forgetting respect for the brass in favour of actually getting the job done. After all, he'd forgotten to be helpful earlier.

If that failed, she could always settle for bashing the control panel off with the butt of her rifle; what she couldn't lock, she would make inconvenient.

'Yes, check all rooms, leave no one behind.' Lyla ordered Rynn, from where she was still arguing with a blast door.

Split from Klyn the Rebels explored the medical centre. Behind the curtain was a surgical bed and apparatus. The bed was unoccupied.

Klyn began his plan to sabotage the Repulsor Beam Generators but it was more difficult than the engineer had anticipated. Rather than command a shut down he might have to set an explosive or damage it enough with something else to stop it working.

The sounds of the Imperial invasion grew louder as the troopers began to break down the blast door.

They had a bit more time which Lyla used to search the room at the end of the tunnel. Inside the room were many crates stacked up against the walls. The boxes were both the Rebel and Verpine supplies.

Klyn's expertise was repairing things but the engineer also knew how to dismantle or disable any device. The Repulsor Beam Generators were no exception. Klyn would have no problem deactivating the power supply and then short circuiting it so that the power could not be restored, or at least not before the whole asteroid was obliterated.
