Strike Force: Shantipole

The Rebel base was its usual bustle of activity, the crew of the Alabak's Gold were greeted warmly and hailed as heroes by many, fellow soldiers, technicians and families alike.

At their arrival at the stockmaster's office she smiled at their return and checked her datapad "on loan. Eight underwater breathing suits and two SG-4 blaster rifles" she read aloud before she offered a welcome "Lieutenant Rahn the commander said to expect you. How can we serve you?"

Lyla had to admit – the heroes' welcome felt pretty good. She felt appreciated, like she was needed and was doing good work. More, meeting these people showed what was fighting for. So she waved back, called greetings, shouted encouragements and jokes, to build camaraderie.

At the quartermaster's office, she made an embarrassed face. 'I'm afraid those suits came back with a few holes in them... They match up with the ones in me.' She gestured for a droid to transport the container out of the Alabak's Gold. 'Maybe you can recover some parts off 'em.'

'But I really liked my SG-4. D'you think maybe I can keep it? Unless you have a better suggestion for vacuum work?'

On a datapad, she began filling out a requisition form. 'Otherwise, we're looking for a portable computer, a medical interface visor, vacuum suits – flight suits or space suits, which would you recommend? Enough for all of us, and some spares. And this T3 droid right here.' She pointed a thumb at T3-M8, then looked around the team. 'Anything else? Ah, we'll need more medpacs!'

Lyla Rahn:
She clapped a hand on Chu-Shkar's furry back. 'Don't worry, Chu. We'll get you your blowfly.'

Chu-Shkar gives Lyla a dirty look at her comment.

Later in the Supply office, he adds to Lyla's list.

[Language unknown: "Ardortouniou."] Chu-Shkar growls out. "BOWCASTER!" comes out of his translator.

At Lyla’s explanation the quartermaster let out a sigh “well there’s not a great demand for the swimsuits, we should be able to get them repaired for next time” she made a mark on the record on her datapad to indicate the damaged stock then returned her attention to Lyla. At the proffered blaster rifle the quartermaster instinctively began to check its condition with an easy efficiently she confirmed it was in working order before she laid it on the counter ”a good rifle, reliable in nearly any environment. I’ve got maybe a couple of choices you might be interested in” she walked among the shelves and crates behind her counter and returned pushing a repulsorsled with a stack of seven boxes.

The first box was dented and corroded on the corners “not much demand for this model, a rifle for someone who appreciates precision and marksmanship” she lifted from the box various parts of different sizes. Quickly she assembled the parts into long-barrelled slugthrower rifle "Czerka Adventurer, designed for high accuracy at long range. The firing chamber fills with a rich oxidizer as the bullet fires. Also can be packed away small" she added as she disassembled the rifle as quickly as she'd built it. Packed away she pushed the old box out of the way and showed Lyla a newer and more common model, what looked at first glance like a regular blaster pistol "DC-17m Interchangeable Weapon System, common during the Clone Wars. Can be switched from rifle to sniper to anti-armour. You take you pick"  she laid out three different attachments designed to be fitted to the muzzle of the pistol like weapon. The quartermaster looked up before she could pack away the ICWS as Chu-Shkar growled and his translator yelled. Interrupted she nodded and picked up another crate and revealed the familiar looking but uncommon weapon, a fusion of modern and ancient technologies "Wookiee bowcaster. I don't think I ever seen one fired outside of the practice range. You sure you know how to handle it" she asked as she put the bowcaster on the desk for the team to examine.

Other boxes were opened. A backpack which contained a portable computer. A high tech piece of headwear and goggles, a medical interface visor. Four orange flight suits of varying sizes. The last box contained six fastflesh medpacs, the quartermaster shook her head as she pushed them across the counter "don't tell the commander" she whispered as the cost of the requisitions were already over their given allowance "so you used all twenty medpacs you took on the last mission? That must have be one ugly fight" she said with a note of respect and awe.

'Ooh.' Lyla looked over the rifles on offer with keen interest and expert appraisal, picking them up, testing weight and balance and feel, and checking over the specs compared to what she was used.

The Czerka Adventurer: 'Nice, but I figure I supply the accuracy, while I always need more stopping power. Slugthrowers are noisy too.' she decided, not sold on it. 'Besides, I've simply got nothing to wear with it.' she added in wry irony and put-on high-class tones.

The DC-17m Interchangeable Weapon System: 'Oh, momma like!' she gasped, eyes bugging and tails almost on end. 'I only saw this in catalogues, but the cost— After what I did to earn my DC-15a, I didn't dare try for the DC-17m... Mmm, standard blaster rifle, beautiful sniper option, and, ah! grenade launcher... I think I've found a new girl's best friend... And you'll let me keep this? Because I'm not sure I can give it back.'

Bowcaster: 'Now that is a strange and amazing weapon.' she said admiringly, looking over Chu-Shkar's fancy crossbow. Using it well was beyond her though.

She counted the flight suits, and questioned 'Uh, there's five of us right now, six if Jason comes, more if we pick up tagalongs. And we'll probably need some spares... And have you got a helmet that will fit a twi'lek's weirdly shaped head? Seriously, I can't even wear hats.'

'It was one ugly fight.' Lyla agreed with meaning, though she wouldn't admit it if she had a few spare still. Supply might not give them any, expecting them to use up everything. 'It was one ugly dog too.'

Klyn kept his own heavy pistol but had a few modifications in made.
Those he could do while they traveled with the various parts they had salvaged from the wreckage.

But for the moment he reached the quarter master with a log of his own.

"Here are a few things we got from 'generous' imperials while we worked on the last mission.  I hope it will be enough to get our balance back into the positive."

he said while Lyla checked her new prized possession.

"One SG4, one imperial suit - might come in handy for infiltration, one unorthodox harpoon pistol - you might want to check it, quite an 'at the moment' inspiration.  And something a bit too big to get it here: a Waveskimmer.

It's currently on the Gold, but since we will need some more room..."

He raised an eyebrow at the mention of the spent medpacs.

"Well, we hall got quite an handful of new scars... big ones..." he added, his hand massaging his side without him thinking about it.

A little imaginative book keeping and the quartermaster had five orange flight suits in the correct sizes and shapes for the anatomy of Lyla, Chu-Shkar, Klyn, Tera and Jason. A flight suit wasn't offered to Rynn who already had an adequate suit of his own "that's the best I can do. Supplies are short, especially essentials like flight suits" she explained.

The Czerka Adventurer was packed away and the DC-17m was left for Lyla to keep "take it. You'll need to find some grenades whilst in the field. We haven't had any in store for a while" she explained.

At Klyn's offer of reciprocation the quartermaster smiled at the ship's engineer "that's make my job a whole lot easier." She then commed an team of technicians to collect the goods immediately before the opportunity passed.  She marked them on her datapad and looked up "anything else you need sweetie?" she offered Klyn.

Chu-Shkar picked up his bowcaster and hooted lovingly as he stroked it. The translator droid at his waste surprisingly didn't translate the sound. Chu-Shkar nodded his head as he slung it over his shoulder. He then picked up the computer, and began to go through it's programs and files with lightning speed. It was obvious that this was where his true talents lay.

[Language unknown: "Ndna ri omant ers Sombe hiul'eengna, our se atas t sompl Me undtereen olse io anout..."]

The Translator began speaking, though it was obvious that it was speaking in yet another language.

"HMM this has the X37b progressives, not as good as the D model but very good..."

Chu-Shkar had slipped into some sort of technobable, and was talking to himself.

Lyla took the DC-17m ICWS and cradled it like it was her first child. 'Ah, that's where they get you – custom ammo... Hmm, looks like there's one in the chamber still, at least.' She tested the stance and aiming posture, remarking 'The reviews were right – the left-side energy clip placement is odd. I'll have to reverse my holster.' Some of the shine was already coming off the weapon, but Lyla wasn't about to suffer buyer's remorse just yet. After all, she hadn't paid for it. She'd have to practice with it on the flight.

Putting it down, Lyla tested the plus-sized helmet over her tails (long, sexy, but really inconvenient at times), coiling them inside the hood. 'Okay, so no spares. Just make sure there's plenty of patches and puncture repair kits.'

Relieved that no more stock would be needed the quartermaster went back to checking her stock as the new supplies were loaded on to the Alabak's Gold. Refuelled and restocked the starship was ready for launch. The astronav computer had been programmed with the coordinates for near to the Roche Asteroid field. Before the hyperspace jump T3-M8 checked the coordinates and course and once the droid was satisfied they were once more travelling the galaxy to a new destination.

The irregularities caused by the asteroid field meant that they would not be able to jump directly to the Rebel base. They would have to travel at sublight speed for the last couple of hours. The Alliance signal receiver onboard the Alabak/s Gold would be able to pick up the broadcasting base-homing device as they got closer and help them find the Commander Ackbar's base.

OOC Please roll a Use Computer check for the Systems Operator.

Before she left, Lyla donated the propulsion pack she'd pilfered from the downed ISC vessel. Only good in water, it had done its job on Sedri, and was now surplus to requirements. It went well with the Seatrooper armour they'd taken as well.

*

After stowing her new gear, Lyla wandered into the cockpit to oversee the launch preparations, hearing Chu-Shkar's somewhat contradictory report. Lieutenant. It really sounded good on her. She hoped that her parents would've been proud of her. 'Don't worry, I got the gist of it. Take us up when you will, Mister Chu-Shkar. Oh, and when port control gives permission to launch, of course.'

She checked the projected course, reciting to make sure she understood it 'Okay. We're dropping out of hyperspace outside the asteroid field and going in at sublight. Fair enough. The walk will do us good and give us time to look around first.'

'And give us some time to get ready. I've been training, I'm rated for heavy weapons now, but I need some practice on the Alabak's turrets. You know, now I know how they work.'

On the way to their new destination, Klyn spent most of his time on the various weapons that went under his scrutiny.

He carefully dismounted them, checked every piece and made the tiniest, but vital, transformation to improve the efficiency of the targeting enhancers.

+1 accuracy for Lyla's weapon, Rynn's weapon, Klyn's weapon.

Chu-Shkar will mostly spend time working on his translator, though he will have Klyn check his Bowcaster, just to verify it's in working order, and doesn't need repairs.

No need to upgrade it yet.

Otherwise he'll spend most of his non piloting time on the computer, getting it set up for his style. Setting up macro's and installing/writing personal programs for his own style of slicing.

Lyla slipped away from the cockpit, making a quick tour of the ship to check in with each of the crew, confirming they were ready and able for the impending mission. Not that it was necessary – she trusted her team and knew their skills well enough now – but she wanted to be a good CO. If anyone had a question or concern, she wanted them to feel they could come to her.

At the workshop, she found Klyn. 'Hey, Klyn, thanks for these weapons mods. We'll need them with the hard targets we keeping going up against.' She examined the gyroscopic stabilisers and auto-targeting enhancers he was installing in her DC-17m ICWS, then left him to it, not wanting to interrupt too much.

Finally, she climbed up into the dorsal turret and settled into the gunner's seat. She spent some time familiarising herself with the controls, now having some more formal training courtesy of Alliance instructors, then went through a training sim, firing weak lasers at asteroids to improve her accuracy. She'd have a better chance hitting TIE fighters now, but she still didn't want any to show up on this mission.

The Alabak's Gold was not a slow starship. It was designed as a fast moving jumpship. The Rebels however often had to make multiple jumps to hide their whereabouts and disguise their trail. Extra calculations were required with the Roche asteroid field disturbing the hyperspace fields. The extended hyperspace journey allowed the Rebels to rest and engage themselves in leisure pursuits or to pursue their own projects. Klyn was busy with repurposing the scavenged parts into tools and weapons the crew would find useful. Chu-Shkar was busy getting himself accustomed to the Mon Calamarian jumpship and Lyla took her responsibility for the crew seriously as she checked on them all.

The personalisation of the sensor array had Chu-Shkar tuned into the ship and aware of what was going on around it. The Wookiee was waiting for the Alliance signal receiver to start blinking so they could plan their approach when another sensor was tripped. They had incoming. Chu-Shkar tweaked the receiver and picked up the objects on the full-spectrum transceiver. Imperials, three TIE fighters! The sensors also detected high energy concentrations in the TIEs weapon ports, they must have also detected the Alabak's Gold and be preparing for an attack run.

OOC Initiative checks please.

Chu-Shkar, using the Gold's internal translator he had set up, barked out a clear message of incoming TIE fighters. It went through the ships intercom, so anywhere they had a speaker heard it clearly. He activated the shields and began maneuvering in anticipation of a dogfight.

Couple of questions, One can I see what type of TIEs they are? and are they in hyperspace? Or had we dropped out at the asteroid field?

Also, What skills will I need to roll for evasive maneuvers? I'm assuming piloting, but are there others?

Lyla had been working her way through the training simulator with success when the TIE fighters popped up on her display. 'Eh? I'm only up to asteroids, TIE fighters are next level.' she complained, tapping the screen to see if the virtual TIE fighters would go away. They didn't. They were not virtual.

Then she heard Chu-Shkar's warning over the intercom. 'Oh, poodoo.' At least she was already in the turret. Hurriedly, she began switching off the simulator and reverting to combat operation. 'Evasive manoeuvres and counter-attack! Bearing 027 mark 183!' she ordered over the intercom.
