Re: Black Tide: Back to Heldenburg

Despite the odd fog Renard is not put off at all.  He's been in fog before and, though it may be strange-smelling, well, they are out at sea after all.  There's all sorts of things that could be making that smell.  No, it's the uneasiness of the crew and captain that's getting to him, though he does his best to go about his duties.  It's difficult to maintain a happy disposition, however, when Jeeves won't stop rattling his chains and popping his lock open and closed, seeming more agitated than usual.

Re: Black Tide: Back to Heldenburg

Solomon leans over the railing and fills the water with chum from his latest meal.  I should have brought more mint leaves.  Disturbed by the fog and the smell he activates his brooch which unfolds into plate armor.  He also makes sure he has both his bow and tetsubo at hand.  The swirling of the fog kept making him believe things were moving about in the distance.

"Still think the sea god isn't trying to curse us?" he said to Renard.  He had a spell that would protect him or another from evil, and constantly considerred casting it.

Re: Black Tide: Back to Heldenburg

At some point Kuldar would halt the music and tales to help with actual work, showing that he had quite a strength behind him as well. The fog seems to worry him a bit, he did not like sailing where he could not see, but Elona seemed to have part of that handled at least. The smell, lack of sight, and general feel was all factors he had to take into account...he tried thinking back and remembering what might be the cause. Ghost Ship? Sea Monster? He pondered...he did not fare into waters often so it was not his subject of choice.

Re: Black Tide: Back to Heldenburg

Kuldar senses the unease of the crew, and does his best to raise spirits- not with a song or tale because such a distraction now could be detrimental, but with words. "Now listen men, these be a bit fright'nin aye, bu' old wives' tales never be a t'ing ta fear. Fog is natural, tha sea full o' nasty smells, wot'ever be out thar, ain't a t'ing to bother 'ardened men- and lasses, like ye." He did his best to incite some bravery, the best way to handle any situation was definitely not by getting scared into indecision.

07:40, Today: Kuldar Balak rolled 30 using 1d20+12. perform(oratory).
Spending a round of Inspire Courage in case that helps any as well.

Approaching Captain Broadarm through the fog, Raznik speaks to him quietly. "I am nervous about this fog, captain. My ability to defend us is reliant on... another. This other may alarm the crew, however, as the beast is a little... unseemly. May I have your permission to summon it?" Although still unsettled by the ship, Raznik is holding up well, and not letting his fear show.

"Bah! It smells like someone disemboweled a thousand squid and let them rot in the sun.  This can't be natural." he said disagreeing with his companions.  "Best to prepare for the worst and not need to than to be caught off guard."

He paced back and forth along the railing looking into the water and out into the fog.  Whether it was fear or anticipation, he was starting to feel better.

Broadarm looks at Raznik with an inquisitive look, "What do ya mean lad? Like an elf or somethin? N' as long as it don't try t' kill me or me crew I'll allow it. The more hands on deck right now, the better off we be if superstition is t' be believed..." he trails off, looking behind him with a shiver before straightening back out with an undignified cough and continues to steer the ship. Thinking of something last moment he turns back to Raznik, "I'd be sure t' announce it t' the crew before ya did such acts though. Superstitious lot we sailors be. Not a one among us who likes surprises at sea."

Raznik nods to the captain. Turning to face the crew, he calls out: "Do not be alarmed by what will shortly appear. The beast is under my control." With that, he begins a long ritual, the same he had performed in the desert days ago. As he nears the end, the beast, Yx'raul, appears amidships with a roar, the glowing rune appearing on Raznik's forehead.

Re: Black Tide: Back to Heldenburg

As the eidolon crawls forth from its native plane it lets out it's thundering roar, causing many of the crew members to cover their ears and jump a bit, even though they knew that something, if not what, was coming. The eidolon's tooth filled maw slowly closes with the end of its roar but sound seems to continue though not exactly from the eidolon. this sound seems deeper, and farther off than on deck...almost as is there is a rhythmic pattern to it as well...

Re: Black Tide: Back to Heldenburg

Kuldar raises an eyebrow, and tries identifying the sound as best he could. He closes his eyes and begins hanging on the sound trying to find direction, the rhythm- if manned by sentient beings it could be drums, the pattern of which revealing their intent. Often ships of raiders would use war drums to incite feat from their targets, he was curious if this was such a situation.

Renard stands nonchalantly off to the side, eyes wide at the surprise appearance of the strange creature that has suddenly appeared, at Raznik's command, on the deck of the ship.  Thinking back to his private studies he tries to come up with some sort of idea about just what it is that he's seeing.  In the meantime he mumbles to himself, "He gets a monster and I'm stuck with a poltergeist..."

Hearing Felicia announce the presence of other ships in the distance, Temnir moves to the railing of the ship and looks over into the fog, trying to spy either one of them to no avail. Re: Black Tide: Back to Heldenburg

Kuldar frowns a bit at the revelation that there were ships, he may have misheard but now the idea that they were drums became more likely. He did not recognize the pattern as hostile though, and couldn't identify the meaning...thinking on it they could have been to warn other ships of their presence. Taking this into account, Kuldar sets himself down and pulls his drums out. "I've got an idea, 'ope I ain't wrong." He then begins to mimic the pattern, but half a beat out of sync so it would be obvious this is coming from another source. He also casts Ghost Sound to accompany him on his performance, to create a larger clamor likely to be heard from further away.

Re: Black Tide: Back to Heldenburg

Solomon had only been on a boat a few times, and never experienced a battle at sea.  What weapons would the other ship use?  Would it just be a trading of arrows?  Were these enemies?  Or other ships lost in the fog.

"Do we call out to them or hope to pass unnoticed?" he asked Elona.  He nocked an arrow and looked towards the bow of the ship.

If we pass within 60ft, Solomon uses detect magic on one of the ships

Re: Black Tide: Back to Heldenburg

As Kuldar begins to play his drums in return, the sound from what is assumedly the ships begins getting louder and faster. Elona looks to Solomon, "Looks like that answers that," she states very matter-of-factly. As the noise gets louder and closer still, shadows start appearing on the port and starboard sides of the ship about 100 yards ahead of The Leaking Lifeboat a few moments before the ships themselves become visible and it is plainly obvious that these are not friendly ships lost in the fog.

As soon as the front of the ships break through into sight, you can see that these ships are decrepit, covered in seaweed and barnacles, missing strips of wood, have ragged sails, and are a bloated greenish color as they glide altogether too perfectly through the water. But it is not the ships themselves that garner the attention of the crew, it is what is on the boats that seems to frighten then and send them running for weapons. On board the two vessels are handfuls of men, or at least the same shape as men though these things are covered in barnacles and seaweed, much like the ships, and stare with blank eyes forward at the party's vessel with mouths hanging open letting a steady stream of water pour down their fronts to join the dripping that comes off of every part of their bodies.

As the ships move forward further to fully expose themselves, at the head of each ship is a figure that is a bit larger than the others, likely the captains, as both seem to have a bit more animation in their actions. That or it could be the garnet-red glowing eyes that burn with an intelligent malevolence.

Wide eyed himself, Broadarm snaps-to, "DRAUGR SHIPS! ALL HANDS ON DECK! GRAB YER WEAPONS AND MAKE READY FER BOARDNG PARTIES! AND SOMEONE MAN THOSE DAMNED SCORPIONS AND START FIRIN!" The remaining cre down below comes running up the stairs with armfuls of weapons, scimitars, short swords, rapiers, and a few crossbows and dump them in the middle of the boat as the crew scramble over to get their hands on one while Tralin and Elona run to the bow of the deck and start cranking two winches which raise the scorpions onto the deck and get to loading them as fast as they can.

OOC: You have essentially 3 rounds before the ships reach The Leaking Lifeboat. Describe to me the actions you take in the 3 rounds (only 18 seconds mind you) to prepare for the draugr ships arrival.

Re: Black Tide: Back to Heldenburg

Kuldar frowns, making a motion as if praying and glowing with an aura for a fraction of a second. He stands up and stands at the middle of the ship, ready to empower as many allies as he could when combat broke out. "My apologies Captain, I'd hate to think I just pulled us into a fight otherwise avoidable." Kilgur squeals wildly, before quieting down as Kuldar climbs on top of the oversized pig- a sight that was bordering humorous but the Boar didn't show the slightest sign of strain from its rider. Kuldar now had an axe in one hand and a shield on the other.

Taking a moment to gather his knowledge on the beasts, Kuldar speaks loudly so all can hear. "Draugr be of a dangerous ilk, spears and arrows none too useful against them...an' fire be bout as pointless. They swim quick too, so pushin' em overboard ain't gonna help none."

Using Loremaster's 1/day to take a 20 on Knowledge check, total 29 on Draugr.

Re: Black Tide: Back to Heldenburg

With bow and arrow already in hand Solomon takes advantage of the range.  He raises the bow and sights along the shaft.  He spies one of the larger captains.  Solomon's irises take on a golden hue as he reads the being's aura, trusting it would read as evil.

"May Pelor's grace flow through me rather than the unseen sun.  May the divine fires of purity lance forth from my finger tips and pierce the heart of darkness," he prays out loud, calling for the ability to smite evil.

"Let us show these creatures that they should never have bothered dredging themselves out of the muck of the ocean bottom!" he calls out hoping to spur on his allies.

He lets go of the arrow, which flies through the air trailing a stream of golden light.

As the captain calls out his warning Renard moves to the nearest railing and looks out at the ships.  He'd never heard of Draugr before but from what the others were saying it was some sort of undead.  He concentrated for a moment, calling up the form of a spell in his mind.  It was one he'd never cast before, but whatever Gods there were had decided one day to put it in his head and now he was glad it was there.  He grasps the manacles looped over his neck in one hand and lifts them away from his chest.  The padlock snaps open and spins frantically around.  Renard begins to chant in an eerie, far-away voice, his free hand gesturing toward the nearest of the ships.

Re: Black Tide: Back to Heldenburg

Solomon wasn't the only one using magic, be it divine or arcane, for protection.  Since he couldn't reach Felicia who was up in the crow's next, and the crew of the Leaky Lifeboat were probably too superstitious, Solomon cast a protection spell on himself.

He then set down his bow and unslung Pelor's Thumb, his large exotic tetsubo.  The undead were going to have a hell of a fight should they try and board.  Solomon moved to the edge of the ship closest to where they would be boarded.  He wanted to be right in the thick of things.
