Re: Weapon

I'm gutted too. I loved this game and Saliq was a lot of fun to play. :(

That said I think a new character and new class might be a lot of fun - maybe our group could be inspired by the stories of our old one (or the wealth they gained at least)?

I do think Eagle should probably have the deciding vote here, since he'd be the one doing the questing to restore the rest of us! :)

DM Storm:
Grand total would be about 27.5K gp! Fortunately, your group has just about that squirreled away in treasure, so it is possible.

Where is that listed? I'm seeing a few thousand on the party treasure thread, but nowhere near 27k...

In reply to Inas Eoinsson (msg # 929):

Ahhh man, what a way to end! Would have been epic had Rath pulled that one off with the final throw, but dem's da breaks I suppose!

As for the future of the game... Let me start by saying I definitely would like to continue - great DM+ great players= great game. As I see it Eagle will turn up, figure something is wrong, and then either attempt a rescue, or walk sadly away and turn the area over to wilderness - I think his neutral alignment would allow either.

So, it's up to you guys really, depending on how attached you are to your PCs - as I said previously I'd be more than happy to turn eagle over as an NPC and start again if the consensus is to start again, or attempt a rescue otherwise!

As a point of order, do the ghasts the PCs killed stay dead? And do all the PCs become ghasts? I'll have to look them up in osric and work out some tactics based on six or nine ghasts respectively! (Normally I never meta game in advance (as it spoils the fun, but in this case it would be justified I think!)

Re: Weapon

In reply to Eagle (msg # 930):

Okay, I have an idea. Us non-Eagle types could roll up 1st level characters to represent villagers Eagle is bringing back. If he succeeds in defeating the ghasts we can resume playing our old characters. If he fails we can begin again with the temporary characters (or brand new ones if they got killed also.)

I realise that a villager probably doesn't offer much scope but you could say Eagle got lucky and found a group of young adventurers from Stormhaven in the local tavern who were stirred by his stories (and the possibility of loot.)

Thoughts?

Actually thinking again a bunch of beginners would be more of a liability than anything against so many ghasts. Never mind!

I'm all for rolling up new characters and returning to the original concept, adventuring in the city of Stormhaven, unless of course the DM wants to try something new and different. That's good too.

Re: Weapon

Yes, I think on balance new characters might be fun. I had a lot of fun playing an illusionist (and had plans for him) but I'd be excited at a chance for something different.

If this was a 2e game I'd probably be thinking a Bard but since that isn't an option I'd see what I can roll up (definitely leaning rogue - though a cleric of Sehanine or Avandra could be fun and have a bit of rougishness to them.)

I think someone already wanted a dwarf cleric. Not sure what I want to play... maybe a Paladin if we can find a party he could play with.

I love the idea of 'Ben' as a Paladin! :D I know, I know new character but still.

Yeah, I think Inas suggested a dwarf cleric, so that's alright I'll look elsewhere. And of course the dice rolls would play a factor.

True, and the odds of Ben's cousin rolling stats good enough for a Paladin are pretty slim.

Gad, ground out twenty eight numbers to see the average, with 3d6 I averaged less then eleven, with four d6 take the top three I averaged twelve!

Been too long since I have done statistics, not sure what the average of 4d6 take the top three would be. I'm thinking 14? Ish?

Interesting article!

My house rule when I DM has, for quite awhile now, been 4d6 re-roll ALL ones, over and over if need be, then take the top three.

Re: Weapon

One of my favorite characters to play was intended to be a druid, but I didn't roll high enough to meet the minimum requirements. I made him a bitter fighter who had been abducted as an infant by a druidic cult and kicked out of the circle when it became clear he didn't have the right stuff. It's brutal to comply with  druidic restrictions on weapons and armor when you're just a fighter.

In the treasure thread. There are a few items which have hidden gp values. For example, the All-Seeing Eye of Ioun and the goblet w/ gems are collectively worth 11K gp! I was going to wait until you guys returned to a town/city to let you ID these items' worth.

You guys have way more treasure than a couple thousand. Heck, there is 3000gp sitting in a bank in Stormhaven, 7000 sitting in that duergar chest, 500 owed from Lord Kazmerak, etc.

You guys have the money.

The ghasts the PCs killed will stay dead. All the PCs will have become ghasts by the time Eagle returns, so there will be 6 ghasts lurking about: the one ghast who was not killed and 5 PC Ghasts.

I am not wedded to anything in particular. I can roll with whatever the group wants to do. This campaign was created on a lark. Prior to starting this game, I had been running 4th edition D&D games and 3.x edition D&D prior to that and I had grown tired of the amount of prep work required and how long it took to resolve combat.

This campaign was thrown together without much thought or planning involved. It was basically improvised from day one and has been a lot of fun, but I am open to other options as well. That goes for other editions of D&D or even retroclones/simulacrums. Games I am willing to run: B/X, BECMI, 1e, 2e, 5e, Castles & Crusades, Labyrinth Lord and maybe Swords & Wizardry.

Though we won't if it succeeds. ;)

Oddly in some ways the thought of seeing all our hard won treasure vanish is almost as depressing as being a ghast.

Still... seeing name level would be fun, and there are a lot of exciting illusionist spells I haven't had a chance to try yet. Okay, consider me won over: let Eagle try and save the day!

What do you think DM? as I suggested earlier we could roll up quick inexperienced (ie. 1st level) types to go with Eagle. It will give us a chance to participate - and back ups in case Eagle fails.

IF it works, we'll cross that bridge when we come to it. :)

Not sure if any of you read Knights of the Dinner Table, but this reminds of the Protege characters they sometimes refer to. LOL

I love KoDT! :D I guess as the spellcaster that makes me Teflon Billy right?

I was thinking if we do succeed we go back to playing our old characters but the protege types could be followers or emergency reserve PCs.

Re: Weapon

In reply to DM Storm (msg # 949):

Okay, a suggestion:

- Eagle wakes in the morning and finds some of the villagers willing to go and retrieve their dead. He also finds some rookie adventurers in a local tavern who are keen to get in on some action (the new PCs).

- We all head back to the tower, not knowing what has happened. When we get there we are set upon by the Ghasts. At some point Eagle realises what has happened (cue look of horror and surprise on his face).

- We battle and maybe even win. Some new PCs may die, others may survive.

- If we win we try to recover the bodies of our original PCs to see if they can be resurrected.

Sound like a plan? If it all goes belly up we can simply abandon this thread and start a brand new adventure in Stormhaven...
