Chapter 7: A Ghastly Discovery

Eagle flew back to Windham in the middle of the night, leaving his companions to spend the night at the ruined keep and lair of the recently vanquished Horned One and his menagerie of minions. Upon arriving at the Fat Falconer Inn, Eagle's news is received with a mixture of joy and sadness. The villagers are of course thrilled to learn that the Dread Ogres and Horned One have been defeated, but when Eagle shares the news of the discovery of scores of bodies, that elation is quietly diminished.

Eagle also shares a private audience with Lord Kazmerak, whom hired the group on the village's behalf to seek out and destroy the Dread Ogre menace. During their meeting, the Lord Mayor's herald, Miglaf, shares what he knows about that ruined keep.

The keep had been occupied by an elderly arch-mage by the name of Cavalrix, though he was mostly commonly referred to as simply, The Arch-Mage. The Arch-Mage did not meddle in the nearby villages' affairs, and mostly kept to himself though at times he was known to take on apprentices, some of which came from Windham itself. About 25 years ago Cavalrix' keep was besieged by an army of Duergar led by a Dark Elf sorcerer and the keep was destroyed, the status of the Arch-Mage unknown. The keep has long been avoided by locals, though occasionally adventurers pass through Windham on their way to attempt to unearth any treasures which might be found within the ruins. Over the years bands of goblins and orcs have occupied the keep, though none have gained a long-standing foothold in the keep. Local legend claims it is haunted by the ghost of Cavalrix, though nobody has come forth offering any proof to those claims.

At any rate, the Lord Mayor pledges his support to the recovery effort and agrees to round up a dozen or so villagers to help reclaim the dead. Additionally, several teams of horse-drawn carts will be supplied in the morning, to accompany Eagle in this task. Finally, Miglaf the Herald tells Eagle how to reach the keep by means of an old wagon track that runs through the Forlorn Hills.

Morning comes and Eagle is joined by a score or so able-bodied villagers and six horse-drawn carts. Additionally, Eagle befriends a group of aspiring adventurers eager to lend their hand as well, and perhaps scour the ruins for whatever might be found! Among this group are two half-elves, an elf, a paladin and a half-orc!

The large group heads out early in the morning and makes their way along an overgrown trail that winds through the hills toward the old keep. The journey takes about an hour before the keep comes into view. As the party approaches, their arrival does not generate any activity within the keep. Odd, considering Eagle's companions are awaiting his arrival?

The courtyard lies silent, perhaps giving Eagle cause for concern. Probing deeper, Eagle steps inside the ruined west wing, perhaps expecting his companions to be waiting his return in there.

Though the party cleared the hall of all bodies last night, Eagle spots five recently slain ghasts in the hall, their bodies hacked to pieces everywhere. Then, he notices what looks like another mangled corpse lying at the top of the stairs!

Though the corpse would be completely unrecognizable to most, Eagle knows at an instant who that mass of bone, blood and precious few scraps of meat belonged to: Norion!

Glancing around, Eagle does not see any sign of his other companions!

Tragedy! What has happened here?!

Once the emotions have perhaps subsided, Eagle spots something nobody noticed last night after searching the hall: a concealed passage in the floor. A heavy stone lids has been cast aside, a few feet distant, revealing a set of stairs leading down to darkness.

Perhaps his companions might be found, somewhere below?

Approaching the ruins, Grakh'tuul sniffed the air. Something wasn't right. He was expecting a warm welcom from the strange Druid's companions, but instead was met with silence. As he spotted the bodies he slowly unslung his shield from his back and drew his sword.

Cautiously he wandered over to the hole and glanced downwards. He called over to Eagle, "Got a passage down here. Maybe your friends went down to finish off those strange creatures."

Re: Chapter 7: A Ghastly Discovery

Miralla was a city girl at heart but after a few not entirely legal and entirely unsuccessful activities she had had to leave Stormhaven in a hurry. By the time she had reached Windham she was broke and bored and jumped at the chance to earn some coin and excitement that this mysterious druid was jabbering about.

Looking at the dead strewn about she was beginning to rethink that. She was not a coward exactly, she just valued her skin.

"I guess we go down?" she said, glancing at the passageway, then at Eagle, hoping he had an alternative suggestion.

Re: Chapter 7: A Ghastly Discovery

Shale was not heartless. He knew the import of the dwarven corpse -- that Eagle's friend and comrade was dead. The loss touched him deeply, and he shared a sad glance at the druid. Even so, there was a bounce in Shale's step as he approached the scene more closely. This whole gruesome adventure was more disgusting than he had anticipated. Surely, it would lead to many future opportunities for brooding contemplation. This was just the sort of adventure the young elf had been seeking when he left the Old Forest Homeland. And to be here, side-by-side with an orc -- well, Shale was almost elated.

He kept back a few paces, his long and supple bow in hand and an arrow on the string. With a bright gleam behind his grey eyes, Shale nodded to Mirella. "Indeed," he agreed, in a voice barely deeper than hers, but with more enthusiasm. "Into the Pit!"

Re: Chapter 7: A Ghastly Discovery

In reply to Shale (msg # 4):

Eagle steps back for a moment, taking on the enormity of what has happened. 'Rest in peace, my friend' he whispers as he steps back from the mangled shell of the dwarf.

Snapping back to the present, he focuses on the jabbering of these strangely enthusiastic new companions. 'Careful,'he says in a calm voice.'This is a dangerous place, and my powers are better in the open. Let us wait to investigate while I summon some useful weather - if anything then attacks us get them out in the open as quickly as you can.'. He will then return to the courtyard and start - what looks to his companions - a strange ritual involving mistletoe and arm movements.

As the sky darkens he looks at the eager faces, and remembers his first meeting with Norion - while beset by whip scorpions.

Looking particularly at the elfin and goblinnoid looking adventurers, he speaks again.'If any of you see in the dark perhaps you could investigate first?' He pauses for a moment.'The world is a dangerous place - be careful in there.'

OOC. Eagle will cast call lightening and wait the required time for the storm to gather - keeping careful watch in the courtyard before letting the others investigate - he will be very reluctant to go charging down a dark passage without finding out what's down there.

In reply to Eagle (msg # 5):

Miralla smiled ruefully at Shale. "Must you be so enthusiastic?"

Despite her carefully honed cynicism the half elven girl was secretly in awe of meeting a real elf. Though she had sometimes delighted in playing up her exotic elivish looks she had been raised very much by humans and didn't know quite what to expect from his kind.

"Okay druid, if it means getting paid, I'll check first. I might not control lightening but I'm good at what I do."

Miralla carefully stepped down into the pit, trying to make as little sound as possible.

Tyrien hasn't said much on the journey, he mostly seems to listen to others talk, and occasionally spends time staring in a leather bound book he carries with him.  At the keep,
he holds his flail in one hand, shield in the other.

"Smells really bad, worse than I thought it would..."  as the others talk of descending and the Druid begins conjuring, he says rather quietly..."we could knock?"

Grakh'tuul nodded. He looked over at Miralla. "Okay, you go in first. Any sign of trouble you come back behind me." He gestured towards his large shield, implying that he might be better at blocking whatever might come at them. He was no hero, but guessed that whatever had killed the sturdy Dwarf would make short work of the half-Elf.

As Miralla entered he followed close behind, sword and shield ready to combat whoever, or whatever, appeared.

Shale edged forward toward the top of the narrow stairs. His eyes were keen in dark places, but he didn't want to clog the tube, so to speak, if the Miralla and the orc had to flee something horrendous. The elf watched them descend, with an occasional glance to the sky to assess the storm. This druid's power was impressive.

[OOC: I'll keep on eye on the two as they climb down. If they get out of Shale's 60' range of vision, he will carefully descend at a slow pace after them.]

Tyrien is mesmerized by the gathering clouds for a minute and then quietly turns and leaves the keep.  He finds the most in charge of the other travellers, and pulls him aside.

"One of the hero's who stayed here has been found dead, and no sign yet of the others, there may still be some danger in this place.  The storm that is gathering above is the druid's spell, it is controlled but may be frightening, you may want move a safe distance away until we give the all clear, someone will come with more reports once we know more..."

He then returns to the keep, occasionally glancing up at the darkening sky. He never liked thunder and is increasingly worried by storm.

Re: Chapter 7: A Ghastly Discovery

From atop the stairs, Bethany does not detect evil in the chamber below.

Miralla and Grakh begin their descent of the narrow stairs, no more than five feet wide and quite steep as well. The stairs pitch rapidly downward, opening into a larger roughly circular-shaped chamber at the bottom. The rotting carcasses of numerous humanoids litter the chamber's floor and angry flies audibly buzz about the room, which likewise reeks of death. Additionally, the chamber's walls are visibly cracked at numerous points, with several large slabs of masonry lying on the floor.

Two corridors extend off this room: one headed north, the other south.

Shale stepped lightly, despite his heavy armor, moving slowly down the steep and narrow stairs into the charnal pit. The reek of death was intense, but it did not overwhelm him. His eyes were everywhere, watching for movement and danger, but also observing his new companions to gauge their reactions to this mess.

OOC: Shale has a 1 in 6 chance of detecting a concealed door by passing by it. Does he notice anything on the stairs, walls, or floor of the round chamber?

Also, does anyone have a light source for Bethany? I don't want to burn off my only offensive spell just yet. :)

Re: Chapter 7: A Ghastly Discovery

Miralla enters the cadaver-filled chamber at the bottom of the stairs, her step light, while looking and listening for any signs of trouble. The chamber itself appears quite empty, though she does hear scuffling noises emanating from the corridor leading south.

Meanwhile. Shale comes to the bottom of the stairs and begins examining the circular-shaped chamber's walls for any signs of secret of concealed doors. He finds no evidence of such things, but does notice quite a bit of damage in the room.

None of the maggot-ridden cadavers on the floor resemble any of Eagle's former companions. These are a collection of presumably victims from the surrounding villages, with a few goblinoid creatures as well, Norkers, and quite a few game animals as well: generous offerings from the Horned One no doubt.

Moving to the far western end of the chamber, one can catch a glimpse down both corridors. The north corridor continues for about 10 feet before opening into what looks to be another chamber, its extent stretching out of view to the east. The southern chamber continues for 20 feet before also opening into a chamber, this one much larger. The southern chamber's south wall has collapsed and is filled with rubble. This chamber also extends outside of view to east, but that is not the most noticeable feature. While peering down the south corridor, Miralla catches sight of a robed humanoid crawling on all fours, like an animal, across the floor toward a pile of rubble in the chamber's southwest corner.

The thing stops, growls, and begins sniffing the air around it...

Re: Chapter 7: A Ghastly Discovery

The robed humanoid crawls across the floor, drawing closer to the corridor leading to the adventurers. From her hiding spot, Miralla gets a better look at the strange humanoid. The creature was clearly a human at one point. A tall, slender bearded man dressed in a blue kaftan marked with red designs wearing a partially unfurled red turban. The man has obviously lost the spark of life however somehow it still moves!

A ghast!

The creature takes a few loping steps toward the corridor before turning and lowly growling, "Do you smell it?! Flesh!" Its voice is pained and watery.

Then, more scuffling sounds are heard, somewhere beyond the ghast, out of sight.

OOC: The robed ghast is about 20 feet south of Miralla, who is at the corner of the circular shaped room, allowing her to see down both the north and south corridors. The rest of the party is further back in the circular shaped room, near the staircase.

This, coupled with the sight of the mangled dwarf up top, convinced him that they were in danger. "Quickly now!" he hissed. "Fall back into the sunlight where we can deal with this foe together."

He kept his shield raised and backed away, ushering the others past him. As quickly as he he could he retreated up the stairs.

Hearing the voices echo up from below, the sound of retreat, Tyrien moves a few feet to stand between the druid and the stairwell.  Although not a very bright man, and that is being generous, Tyrien is wise and with that comes a sort of strong common sense.  His common sense is telling him the druid will decide whether he lives or dies today.  And so, he will shield the one called Eagle.  Pulling out his bow and arrows, he stands ready to fire when an enemy comes up those stairs.

Re: Chapter 7: A Ghastly Discovery

The party decides to retreat toward the stairs when the ghasts become keenly aware of their presence. Miralla is the furthest in the chamber, while Grakh, Beth and Shale stand a bit further back, near the bottom of the staircase. Tyrien and Eagle remained at the top of the stairs, waiting for further report.

Miralla races past Beth, Grakh and Shale and quickly flies up the stairs as the ghasts give chase. Scarcely a few seconds pass when that trio spots the first ghast entering the round chamber. The robed-undead lopes into the chamber, slobbering and growling, when it draws to the center of the room, about 10 feet distant from Beth and Grakh, Shale just a few feet behind the paladin and fighter.

The ghast then turns its head and regards the three adventurers, a cruel smile forming on its partially devoured face. "There it is..." it growls lowly, before slowly advancing...

The ghast is on Grakh a moment later, raking its claws across the half-orc's flesh. Fortunately, Grakh is heavily armored, but that doesn't take the sting of the attack away. More importantly, armor does nothing against the ghast's paralyzing touch...

A moment later, four more ghasts appear in the hallway. They growl and hiss in cruel delight upon noticing prey.

Then, the stench of death fills the chamber, assaulting Beth, Grakh and Shale's olfactory senses.

OOC: Grakh is hit for 6 points of damage and must make a saving throw vs Paralysis or become paralyzed. Beth, Grakh and Shale must make a save vs Poison, or will be overcome by the stench and suffer -2 penalty to attacks.

1 ghast is engaged with Grakh. Ben and Miralla are within 10 of that ghast. Miralla made it to the top of the stairs, where Eagle and Tyrien are currently located.

Grakh'tuul braced himself as the creature launched at him. He grimaced as claws slipped through the gaps in his armour and raked his flesh. He felt a strange sensation as it's deathly venom attacked his body but he managed to shake off it's effects. As the smell of the chamber assaulted his nostril he roared in anger. It would take more than a nasty biff to bring him down.

He pushed the creature back and slashed it across the chest with a hefty blow, then stabbed forward, skewering it through the belly. "Back to hell you diseased streak of piss!"

He then continued to back away, hoping to reach the sanctuary of the open sky.

Shale, relieved that the skinny half-elf made it out of the charnel pit, began to take tentative steps upwards after her. Still, though, he faced the darkness, and as the stench of the undead churned his tender elven gut and the monstrosity began to savage the orc down below, Shale sent loose two arrows astray into the darkness.

Then he turned and leapt up the stairs like an antelope.

Re: Chapter 7: A Ghastly Discovery

Beth and Shale are overcome by the powerful stench of death and begin uncontrollably retching at the bottom of the stairwell. Still, both continue to fight on, attacking ineffectively between bouts of projectile vomit.

Grakh savagely cuts down the robed ghast, whom Eagle would instantly recognize as the human that used to be Saliq, slicing the thing nearly in half, right down the mid-section. Any sense of victory from the success is instantly diminished when four more ghasts file into the room. Fortunately, Beth and Grakh are in the vanguard, at the base of the stairs and are thus able to minimize the number of potential assailants to two at a time.

Two ghasts sweep in to fill the void left by the slain ghast, with two just behind, reaching out their grasping claws in hopes of dragging a victim to them.

A powerfully-built ghast in tarnished banded mail (Eagle would be so pissed!) claws at Grakh, striking the half-orc once, grabbing hold of his collar. The ghast latches on and moves in to bite the side Grakh's face. The wounds prove too much for the mighty half-orc and he slips into unconsciousness, falls to the ground, and begins to slip closer to death.

Standing at his side, Bethany looks up between bouts of puking and sees her long lost brother advancing toward her. Except this isn't the lovable, if not scrappy rogue from the Narrows anymore. Ben has transformed into a creature of horror, his skin a grayish-screen and marked up with deep wounds covering the entirety of his form. There is no look of recognition in this monster's eyes', only pure, absolute evil. Ghast-Ben throws himself at the Paladin. Beth wards off both the ghast's claws, but begins puking again, giving the ghast an opportunity to sink its teeth into her arm. Beth shoves the thing aside before it can make good on its intent!

Miralla has now rejoined Eagle and Tyrien at the top of the hidden stairwell, in the decrepit grand hall. Shale is firing arrows from his bow as he retreats up the stairwell. Grakh lies unconscious and dying at the base of the stairwell. Beth is pressed on all sides by growling ghasts.

OOC: Grakh is hit for 10 points of damage and unconscious and dying.

Shale halted. The sounds, the smells were horrific. The orc was down, but the heroic Bethany Scristos still stood, all flashing steel and angry eyes. Shale would not leave her to fall in darkness.

In truth, he did not see the family resemblance, but he singled out the ghast that was Bethany's brother, and with a poetic incantation and a flourish of his slender fingers, Shale called forth arcane light from the creature's face -- a distraction, he hoped, that would allow the paladin to withdraw or to bring ruin on the walking dead.

Re: Chapter 7: A Ghastly Discovery

With Grakh lying dying at her feet, Beth faces off against one of the ghasts whom was not affected by the sudden burst of light that filled the darkened chamber. The ghast growls menacingly and throws itself at the Paladin of the Raven Queen, attempting to claw through her defenses. A furious exchange ensues and Beth defends herself admirably, but is raked across the face once, a superficial wound, but it does not take much for the vile undead foe's touch to have a paralyzing effect. Hopefully for Beth, her God would see her through so she can escape to the safety of numbers, calling to her from the top of the narrow staircase.

The other ghasts shield their eyes, howling in protest as their eyes adjust to the light. A momentary reprieve, perhaps?

OOC: Beth is hit for 2 points of damage and must make a save vs paralysis (Good luck!) Grakh is unconscious and dying on the floor.

Re: Chapter 7: A Ghastly Discovery

Shale and Tyrien retreat from the top of the stairs, drawing back about 20 and 30 feet respectively, just outside the gaping hole leading into the ruined western wing, both drawing and taking a bead at the top of the stairs to ready themselves for if and when the ghasts emerge. Bethany also flies up the stairs and takes up a position next to some topped wooden beams. Eagle is several feet beyond her, perhaps trading glances at the darkened skies above, their lower folds heavy with Melora's fury. Miralla glances around the ruined hall for a suitable hiding place from which she can possibly later spring for a back attack. She eventually settles on hiding behind one of the stairwell banisters, halfway to the balcony and over the previously concealed stairs leading down into the ghasts' lair.

The ghasts' howls and snarling grows louder as they clamber up the stairs, a moment later four ghasts spill into the hall. Eagle will recognize three of the ghasts immediately as his former companions: Ben, Inas and Rath! The fourth is wearing the tattered vestments of a nobleman, a golden circlet studded with magnificent gems crowning the creature's vile head.

The four ghasts emerge from the narrow stairwell, sniff the air while looking around, before finally leveling their glazed, yellowish eyes on Bethany and Shale, just 20 feet distant. They growl and begin making slurping noises as they advance!

OOC: The ghasts are about 10 feet distant from Beth and Shale, 20 feet distant from Tyrien and 30 feet distant from Eagle. Miralla is located on the stairwell 20 feet northwest of the ghasts.

Beth, Eagle, Shale and Tyrien are standing in the courtyard, amidst the rubble and debris. Miralla is still inside the keep.

Shale and Tyrien sink an arrows into two of the ghasts and a moment later, stubborn weeds and tufts of grass rise from beneath split timbers, dried reeds and broken masonry in the general vicinity of the ghasts. The vegetation grows rapidly, soon encompassing a large area around the ghasts, all of whom fight against the grasping vegetation. The ghasts lose the battle and are completely entangled in the thrashing plant-life.

Re: Chapter 7: A Ghastly Discovery

With the ghasts held fast by Eagle's entangle spell, the next several minutes are little more than target practice for the party's missile weapons. Arrow after arrow are sunk into the maniacal undead, punctuated by a bolt of lightning here or there. It is cheerless work, made none the more pleasant by the fact all understand these were formerly living, breathing people not unlike the adventurers. In fact, it is probably most unpleasant for Eagle, seeing his former companions in such a state.

But it is a grim task that must be completed...and is.

Meanwhile, Bethany slips through the entanglement and proceeds down the stairs, to see if she can do anything to prevent the half-orc from completing the transition from half-orc to ghast.

OOC: Going to assume the party is able to defeat the entangled ghasts, rather than dragging out a round by round combat over the next several weeks to have you guys roll attacks/damage. The entangle spell will last 10 rounds and that is probably enough to accumulate enough damage to kill all the ghasts.

Shale moved forward cautiously to begin salvaging spent arrows from the ghast carcasses strewn out in the courtyard. He had regained control of his quavering innards and was at no risk of vomit, but the odor was still amazingly terrible.

He paused, gorey arrow in hand, boot on the chest of the particularly ugly one in banded mail, and turned to Bethany with a wry smile. "I admire your valor. Perhaps I can offer a middle course. Close the hole for now, assist these people as Tyrien suggests, and return another day to the charnel pit?"

He returned his eye to the arrow, giving it a dissatisfied grimace. "I may need more arrows."

Realising that the immediate threat had gone, Grakh'tuul cleaned his blade with an old piece of rag and sheathed it, then slung his shield over his shoulder. He turned to Bethany and Eagle. "Your magicks saved me, I am in your debt. I will see the debt repaid one day." He slammed his fist into his chest as a salute. The Qaggaa'xoq took honour very seriously, and the young half-Orc made his vow solemnly. He was now sworn to protect the lives of the Druid and the paladin until the debt was repaid.

When Bethany and Shale began to discuss their next move he looked between them. "I agree that this place needs to be cleansed, but maybe we need some tools more fitted to the job. A few barrels of oil will make this place burn."

Decisions requiring thought were never Bethany's strong suit, action  being more her speed, still should could not do this alone.

"Seal it if we must, but we needs must search to make sure there are no other threats within these walls..."

She is uncertain and uncomfortable with the thought of the half-Orc being in her debt, she had no clue what Grakh'Tuul's people might consider fair payment, but she hoped it was less gruesome then the time Kitty'Klaw left that dead rat in her cell back at the temple where she had been raised.

If any were to wonder, she has yet to recognize the body of her brother among the fiends they had laid to rest.

He considers the stone cap for a moment. 'The holy knight is right, we can't just hope that nothing else is festering down there. The evil that was here before was great, so I believe that there will be little down there, but I think we should check now.

'After that, everything in this keep now belongs to me and my dead friends - it is my intention to use the treasure here to seek help from the temples of Stormhaven to bring my friends back to life. You seem like a good bunch - if you would accompany me back to the city, I am sure you could keep any treasure left over. If we continue our adventures after this you could even join us if you choose - be warned though, we have faught more deadly adversaries then these undead.'

Re: Chapter 7: A Ghastly Discovery

Following the battle, Eagle examines the fallen ghasts and comes to the horrifying realization that the ghasts they just fought are none other than his former companions, save for Norion, whom was already accounted for. Something terrible happened here last night while Eagle was back at the village. Eagle has been charged with this task before, so he well knows the drill. Except this time it is not just a single party member, but all of them!

One of the ghasts is not his companion though, but a monster dressed in what look like a nobleman's robes, albeit tattered, and wearing a golden circlet studded with brilliant gems. Perhaps a former lord of this keep?

After taking stock of the defeated ghasts, the party discusses their options.

In this, the party members look to Eagle for leadership. Eventually the party agrees to descend into the dungeon to search for signs of any other threats.

Once down below, the party first heads down in the direction the ghasts came from, to the left. The short corridor opens into a larger, ruin-filled chamber. The chamber's southeast corner has partially collapsed and stone, earth and other debris litter its floors. This chamber is still filled with the stench of ghast and more than one member suffers bouts of vomiting while investigating the area.

The party finds a collection of treasure piled into a hollow between two large cinder blocks. Eagle recognizes this as the treasure that was wrested from the Horned One's lair. The group removes this and finds a sturdy strongbox beneath these recent additions to the ghasts' hoard. The strongbox is made of sturdy wood reinforced with metal banding and is sealed with an iron lock. Save for a collection of bones and bits of clothing here or there, nothing of value is found in the lair.

Turning their attention now to the south corridor, the party discovers a chamber in an even worse state. The entire southern half of the room has collapsed. Save for stone, earth and other debris, the only thing of interest found in this room is what looks like a stone staircase descending down. The staircase is filled with rubble and eventually terminates in a pile of seemingly impassable ruin.

There are no other obvious passages to explore in either chamber.

"I can try," replied Miralla proudly.

The young half-elf had been badly affected by the realisation one of the undead had been Saliq Musfara, with whom she had been closely aquainted at times. It had taken a while to get over that shock and inform Eagle. "You might have known him better and longer than I but I do know he was a devout follower of the moon goddess. If the temple of Sehanine has the skill, he'd want them to try and bring him back."

Crouching by the strong box she removed a small leather case from her backpack. Opening it she extracted a gleaming metal sliver about nine inces long and scarely thicker than a pin. Then she set to work on the lock.

The force of the blast rocks Miralla, Grakh and Shale, all of which are fairly close to the trapped lock when it goes off. One moment they are there, watching in anticipation of what treasures might be held within that strongbox, and when the dust settles, they are gone!

The other party members must surely be horrified by what they see next, for the gore is beyond words to adequately describe. Suffice it to say, picking out what belongs to who proves especially challenging in a situation like this, for what little remains is millions of bits of charred skin, gristle and bone. The horror.

Though surely such concerns are secondary, any who might be cold-hearted enough to look might notice the strongbox remained intact after the blast, though the same cannot be said for those poor three would-be adventurers.

Adventure is fraught with peril, but the rewards can be huge for those whom Avandra smiles upon.

OOC: Miralla, Grakh and Shale took 20 points of damage from the trap, driving them all well below -10, aka Dead.

Eagle took a moment to recover himself from the blast, and then takes in the gory scene with sad eyes. In truth he barely knew the departed adventurers, and he couldn't pretend to be too upset, but still. . .

Turning to Bethany he nods his head and acknowledges her pain. 'I'm sorry', are the simple words that he offers.

After some time he returns to the courtyard, where presumably the villagers are recovering their dead with the aid of Tyrien. Making sure the bodies of his friends are recovered, he offers a couple of gold pieces to a couple of likely lads to recover the strong box. Ushering everyone else back he then proceeds to invoke his strange power, hoping to split the very wood of the box apart.

Assuming he is still alive after this, he will then enter any unexplored towers of the - presumably abandoned - keep, and give a quick search for anything else of value. If this can be accomplished safely he will then invite Bethany and Tyrien to accompany him back to stormhaven with a wagon of his old friends.

OOC: will cast warp wood on the strongbox to try to destroy it. Obviously if there's any roleplay needed for any of these tasks, let's do that, otherwise I'm trying to expedite a return to stormhaven and an attempt to raise/roll up old/new characters!

One of the strongboxes' planks is twisted violently as a result of Eagle's magic, and eventually snaps in half. As a result of the boxes' compromised state, loose coins, curiously platinum and copper, spill out of the chest onto the ground.

The strongbox appears to only have been protected by a single explosive ward, for further tampering with the chest does not produce any ill effects.

Inside the now damaged chest, the survivors find: 3000 pp, 3000 cp, 20 gems of differing type, quality and weight, a wrought gold scepter with a braided band and a setting for a large stone, and seven vials filled with liquid substances of differing hue and viscosity. Additionally, the slain ghast wears a golden circlet set with several deep purple stones. Finally, the party also recovers the treasure wrested from the Horned One.

This is perhaps the greatest hoard recovered by Eagle, but sadly, the cost was quite steep.

Re: Chapter 7: A Ghastly Discovery

Meanwhile, the villagers, led by Eagle and company, make the somber journey back to Windham, their horse-drawn carts loaded down with the corpses of their loved ones and neighbors. It is a bittersweet affair for all, for even though the Horned One's reign of tyranny has ended, it came at a great cost. Much blood was shed at that ruined keep and in truth, it will likely take little time before some new foe moves in to occupy the site.

The Forlorn Hills are a danger-filled land and ogres and demons are but a fraction of the terror that dwells within those dark, rolling hills. But for now, the threat has been vanquished and a new day dawns.

Eagle and company are well-received by Lord Mayor Kazmerak, who owes them a debt of gratitude for their bravery and sacrifice. Well, not just gratitude, but also a bounty of 500 gold and a parcel of land just south of the village, which he honors without quarrel. With a cart loaded down in gold and treasure, those 500 gold pieces might seem a pittance now, but the Lord Mayor pays nonetheless.

The next several days are spent seeing to the proper disposition of the deceased, the cemeteries and graveyards heavy with the scent of freshly-dug earth and floral bouquets and the air rent with sobs and wails as the villagers come to terms with their loved ones' fates.

But, there is little time for Eagle to mourn. He still has much work to do, and it must be done back in his home city of Stormhaven...

Returning back to Stormhaven, Eagle consorts with the High Priestess of his patron deity, Ulaa Elliastrae, a half-elven woman who has cordial relations with the druids of that city. The High Priestess agrees to aid Eagle, but will require a considerable payment to do so. In total, the High Priestess asks for 6,000 gp to cast the raise dead spell, which may be used on all of the deceased companions, though those who were turned to ghasts must have the spell cast on them twice, for the first casting merely removes their undead state. It is a risky proposition, for sure, but the only option, for the ressurrection spell is beyond her ability to cast.

High Priestess Ulaa Elliastrae claims the only cleric powerful enough to cast the resurrection spell is the High Priestess of Erathis, Aldanna Fairhand, whom presides over the most opulent temple in the city, the Golden Hall.

'Thank you for your offer, I must try to raise the funds for the donation. But tell me, could you introduce me to this Aldanna Fairhand - I would like so much to try to bring the dwarf back to this plane.'.

Afterwards he speaks to Bethany - 'your brother knew many in this city who could dispose of treasure. Can I leave you to help turn this jewellery into gold, while I attempt to speak to Aldanna Fairhand?

Re: Chapter 7: A Ghastly Discovery

Eagle is well aware of The Golden Hall, the most opulent of all Stormhaven's temples, its three gleaming gilded towers visible from any point within the city. A magnificent structure of polished marble and golden filigree, its well-furnished interior is equally lavish in apportionment. This temple, more than any others in the city, is well justified in its employment of armed guards to protect its contents.

Eagle inquires with an acolyte and begs an audience with the High Priestess herself. The acolyte initially says that the High Priestess is extremely busy with clerical matters, but eventually concedes and escorts Eagle to a private audience chamber located in a sprawling wing off the main hall. There, he tells Eagle to wait while he informs the High Priestess.

Several minutes transpire before High Priestess Fairhand arrives.  The High Priestess is a study in contrast against the much simpler dressed Eagle. The half-elven woman of middle years is dressed in a showy white robe, over which an embroidered golden sash rests across her thin shoulders. The woman's flaxen hair is pulled back in a braided bun and a thin golden circlet rests at he top of her brow.

She enters the room like a cool breeze and proceeds directly toward Eagle. Two mailed attendants wait a few feet beyond her, their posture stiff and formal.

The High Priestess stops about five arm lengths from Eagle and holds her proudly aloft while studying the man before her. This lasts for a few seconds before a hint of a smile forms.

"Acolyte Isak informs me you wish to speak to me, Eagle, Initiate of the Fifth Circle of Stormhaven. Well, you have my audience. Speak your piece." Her tone in calm and businesslike as she studies Eagle through icy blue orbs.

'Thank you so much for your time, high priestess. I come to seek the aid of your just and goodly Lord, who I know is compassionate and protective of those who seek to protect the weak from evil.

'My companions and I have been in the wilds these last few months. We have slain an evil lizard king, who was abducting Stormhaven's people for blood sacrifices, we have restored the lizards tribe to its rightful home in the forlorn hills, we have sealed up an entrance to the under dark from which evil drow have emerged, and most recently we have tackled a band of dread ogres and giants who were preying on the outlying villages of Windham.

'In the last task we encountered great evil indeed - 4 demons from the depths of the abyss. We faught bravely, and while it nearly overcame us we succeeded. Alas my friends - among them a dwarf with nothing but good in his heart - were so weakened they fell in the night to foul undead while I fetched help.

'The dwarf has done so much good, for so many people, and I hoped your lord could recognise that in his infinite wisdom.

'I'm sure if aid was given, then thanks would be offered - not just in immediate tribute ("though you might like that," Eagle thinks wistfully to himself as he takes in the opulence around him) - but in future: my friends planned to develop the land around Windham into a protected enclave, which I'm sure could include a chapel and some acolytes of your order. So through their future actions your Lord's will will be furthered.

'For my part, if I cannot recover my friends I will probably wander my newly acquired land and let nature take its own course, wherever it might lead,'
he finishes softly and sadly.

He then looks the priestess in the eye, not with pride or hubris, but with hope.

Re: Chapter 7: A Ghastly Discovery

High Priestess Fairhand's cool demeanor warms a bit upon hearing Eagle relate the party's exploits. This is a woman who is impressed by people of status and clearly the city druid who stands before her is a man of action and accomplishment, if his words are indeed true. She does not know the Druids of Melora to be boastful or liars as a general rule, and given what she has heard of recent events, it comes as some pleasure for her to finally meet one of the young adventurers responsible for the tales she has heard.

"Well met indeed, Eagle," she responds after Eagle has told his tale. "Your exploits are not entirely unknown to me, for I am ever mindful of those who tame the dark corners of the world."

The High Priestess' posture remains erect and formal throughout, though her tone softens considerably. "It seems we work toward similar purpose and I cannot speak false to say what you have told me does not greatly pique my interests to lend aid to your cause."

"But what you ask does not come without great sacrifice. Nor of piety. For while it is true the Raven Queen's specter can be staved, I would need assurances that it will be a worthwhile venture for Erathis' benevolence."

THe High Priestess continues to explain she is willing to help, but only if Eagle agrees to do as he has suggested: clear the area and build a shrine worthy of Erathis' good will. Additionally, she will request a sacrifice of 6,000 gold pieces, a sum much lower than what she might ordinarily request, were it not for his other assurances.

All told, Eagle needs 54,000 gold pieces to raise Ben, Inas, Norion, Rath and Saliq. May the Raven Queen be merciful in granting each of their release from the bond of eternal servitude in the Realm of the White Wall.

OOC: You can liquidate any of the treasures you currently own. Additionally, with effort, you may identify any of your magical items at a base cost of 100 gp for each magical property identified. Some of your items will actually require several castings of that spell, because they contain more than one magical property. Go ahead and let me know what you want to do in this regard.

Now that word of the party's exploits has had a chance to travel through Windham and the other villages, and Stormhaven itself, I will add the XP value of the non-magical treasure. The magic treasure value will be added after it is identified.

Re: Chapter 7: A Ghastly Discovery

Meanwhile, in the Seaside District, at the Temple of the Good Wind, High Priestess Ulaa Elliastrae prepares her staff for the raising ritual which is to be performed at high tide. The air is filled with the scent of freshly cut flowers and burning incense as the sun crashes into the horizon, spraying the sky with splashes of violent, orange and crimson. Outside the temple, a polished avatar of Melora watches the sea, her right hand drawn clutching a length of seaweed to her bossom.

Sea scale tarnishes her visage, but the statue is no less majestic for it. A bed of flowers is spread at her feet, while braziers burn lowly, casting her alabaster robes in a soft glow. The bodies of Ben, Inas, Rath and Saliq are lying in gentle repose atop the flowers. Their bodies have been washed clean of their wounds, but all color has now faded from their corpses. A group of acolytes gathers in a circle around the altar and begins humming lowly, a hymnal of the Goddess of the Wild Sea. This will continue through the ritual, their voices combining to mimic the rhythm of lapping waves.

When low tide finally comes, the High Priestess of Melora finishes the ritual by calling upon the power of her deity. The waves crash harder into the dock beams, causing shoots of sea foam rise higher around the shrine. Soon a wall of water rises well above the shrine and crashes down upon the bed of flowers. The flowers are swept out to sea, leaving Ben, Inas, Rath and Saliq, soaked, weakened, but alive at the heels of Melora's avatar. The acolytes cease their hymnal and come to the side of the freshly raised adventurers.

Praise to the Sea Goddess!

OOC: Ths group is alive again, but will require extensive bed rest.

Re: Chapter 7: A Ghastly Discovery

Meanwhile, in the Council Halls district, The Golden Hall prepares their own rites. Norion's corpse is dressed in silken robes, lying atop a gilded altar. A beam of sun filters in through a crystal window, illuminating the slain dwarf. A group of acolytes stands beyond High Priestess Fairhand, whom is standing by Norion's side. The High Priestess raises her hands heavenward and slowly release flecks of gold dust which fall over Norion's body.

When this ritual is complete, she begins chanting the Sacred Oath of Erathis, her eyes closed and mind bent toward the task at hand. Her face progressively twists into one of deeper concern as troubling visions flash through her mind. The Priestess' chants become more forceful, before finally subsiding into little more than a whimper. Then, she collapses at Norion's side, covered in deep sweat.

Her acolytes gasp and race to her side. She is still moving, though barely. The same cannot be said for Norion, whom still lies still upon the gilded altar.

"I am sorry," she whispers weakly. "Your companion has been forever claimed to the Raven Queen's domain. The only hope for him is to be allowed entry to his God's Hall, should she be willing to release him. Norion Ironaxe is no more for this world. Let his mortal deeds be known in song."

With that, she collapses and is then rushed off to her private chambers to rest.

OOC: Norion did not make it...

Saliq felt very weak. Mercifully his memory of recent events was extremely clouded as he allowed the acolytes to help into a bed. He did have a vague knowledge of what had gone wrong and that awful battle with the undead but then... only flashes. Perhaps his mind was protecting him from the horror by blocking out the memories.

"The others?" He asked, his voie more of a croak. "Are they alright?"

Pale moonlight... A soft, warm breeze... Silence... Peace...

Then all was nothingness... Cold, black, nothingness...

Inas woke with a start. He was cold and wet, and naked as the day he was born. He tried to sit up but couldn't, the muscles in his arms and legs felt weak as a kitten. He tried to look around but all was blurry. There were other figures there but he couldn't make them out, friend or foe he was not sure. He tried to speak but no words came out, his tongue felt swollen yet dry.

He lay back down and closed his eyes again, silently praying for the moon to return.

Aldo Rathmus arrives at a moment of clarity, a lifetime of clarity. A new breath catches in his lungs, salt water in his mouth and eyes, and he arrives into the cold, naked, not for the first time. Clarity, and awareness of every scar, memory of the wounds that caused them, without a need to look upon them with his eyes or trace them on his body with his fingers. Every act of kindness, of indifference, of spite ... it's all laid out before him. And it's okay.

His body whole but exhausted, he waits, content to breathe and remember. Without anxiety or hope, he wonders briefly if the memories will hold, or if they will slip away again as so many have before.

In reply to Aldo Rathmus (msg # 106):

Having witnessed the exultant power of Melora's grace, Eagle is in a cheerful mood as he slips away to let his friends recover their senses. Travelling back to the golden temple, his joy is short-lived, as it becomes apparent that Norion has left this world.

Eagle suddenly feels tired too. To the temple of Erathis he gives the all seeing eye of Ioun, a sapphire of beauty, antiquity - and some value, while to the temple Melora's he gives the 3000 platinum pieces, and the 9,000 gold coin from the  the silver goblet set, and the golden headband.

After this he retires to Godshome park for a few days while the others convalesce, where he sets about writing a ballad of Norion on his guitar, and shares tidings with the druids of the park.

Re: Chapter 7: A Ghastly Discovery

The days of recovery are long and restful for Rath. The lack of pain is new for him, but the fatigue is worrisome, though eventually that fades and his old strength returns to limb and heart. He visits his friends, Saliq and Ben, Eagle and Inas, but he has little to say. There is a bright calm about his eyes that this company has not seen before, and his typical smirk is subdued.

Rath bids farewell to Norion Ironaxe privately. He honors the warrior's request to shed no tears, but he is quiet and sits with closed eyes for a long, long time before leaving the body to its caretakers. For his part, Rath has no doubt that Norion has won release from the Raven Queen's realm to enter the Hall of Moradin.

It's a fate that Rath is not yet ready for; and Fate is not yet ready for him, apparently.

Rath bathes thoroughly, buys a good shave and haircut and a new set of clothes and shoes, and he puts on his pendants -- that blue sun of Pelor, that lucky coin -- and he steps out into the streets of Stormhaven unarmed and unarmored. It's a damn strange feeling, and he buries a trace of apprehension under a confident stride along unfamiliar streets, aiming for sections of town he knows better, far from the temple of Melora.

There was a time when passing guards on the open street would be a cause of concern, but it's unlikely the guards will recognize this clean young man as the ruffian he had been two years ago. And, if he were to be recognized ... well, Rath is prepared for consequences.

There are always consequences.

Soon, his feet carry him into sketchy neighborhoods, and he looks with fondness on ramshackle buildings and sprawling ghettos -- well, no, not fondness at all, but with some feeling of memory he can't identify. Definitely not fondness.

He finds the place, and he loiters for long moments, walking slowly along the curbs to and fro, building up the courage, figuring out the words, before shrugging, smirking in amusement as his own reluctance, and stepping resolutely to the front door of the house. He knocks firmly and waits for the answer.

"Afternoon, Ma'am," Rath nods solemnly. "Guessing you don't recognize me. Rath." He has to wonder what thoughts that puts in the old woman's head. "Aldo Rathmus. Monvo's old ... friend. Don't close the door!" He pauses, hand raises to keep that door open. "I got news of your boy you need to know."

A wrinkled, frizzy-headed woman stabs her gaunt chin through a narrow crack in the doorway, her clear gray eyes looking suspiciously at the stranger. She is guarded in demeanor but hears Rath out. Upon hearing his name, it is clear she recognizes the man, though his appearance is much changed since she last laid eye on him. Those were leaner, meaner times and the man that stands before her now is a man of accomplishment. The same could not be said of his younger self.

She opens the door enough for her entire face to be seen now. "Is he in jail?" she asks matter-of-factly. "Aint nothing I can do about that. If he is, then he probably deserves what's coming to him," she says defensively. "Might do him some good!"

This is a woman who has suffered much disappointment in life. The way Monvo turned out is just the icing on the cake. Little does she know the news Rath is about to deliver.

Re: Chapter 7: A Ghastly Discovery

Death had been a sweet release for the dirty little man who once walked the earth and answered to the name 'Ben Scritos' with a nervous glance over his shoulder and a neurotic need to know where all the exits were.

His life had always been one of small victories and catastrophic failures, his death had simply been the pungent punchline of the bad joke he knew himself to be the butt of, but never really saw the humor in.

The faint scent of ruby and grey, the subtle sound of a sunset...

The first call back to life, he resisted.

"I will be your whipping boy no longer Avandra. Luck favors the bold, you promised, but when was luck ever my friend?" He spat out the word luck, that foul, fickle bitch to whom he had dedicated his life. That bitch which had <u>cost</i> him his life.

He moved further away from the land of life, the taste of entropy sweet between his teeth, soothing as he sucked it's cold sweetness down into his lungs. His anger would sustain him in the darkness between the stars for many years, of that he was certain.

A shadow flitted between him, the subtle difference of black on black lost on his eyes, but not on his heart.

The flutter of wings... what was that oddly flavored image in his mind? Bethany?

He hesitated, glanced over his shoulder, paused a moment longer, then began continued his journey.

Again the sound of wings, the flavor of darkness shifted, took on tone, texture changed tense forward, then back, the sideways. Confusion filled his mind, and found himself forbidden the escape he thought he had wanted.

Avandra has forsaken you, but I never shall, Ben Scritos. Return to me, be my agent in the lands of men, chose the soothing darkness of the Raven Queens embrace.

He struggled a moment longer, then surrendered to the will of the Goddess, but more importantly to Ben, he surrendered to the will and wishes of his sister. She who had risked everything to bring him back, she who had bargained with a goddess to give him this second chance, his sweet Bethany.

Sure she had a stick up her ass, but blood was blood, and his began to surge thru his veins once again, warm, vibrant, and dark...

Re: Chapter 7: A Ghastly Discovery

After Saliq had recovered sufficently, he bathed and barbered and dressed accordingly to set out into world.

As was his habit when seeking out news in low places he use his illusions to take on a different form and avoid leaving a trail. A simple Change Self spell and he became a blonde haired half elf maiden named Liessa, and as 'Liessa' he entered several taverns to listen to some of the gossip on what had taken place in Stormhaven during their absence.

Returning from his expedition (and returning to his real form) Saliq thoughtfully made his way to the Temple of the Moon near the Bazaar. Here he prayed for Miralla (whose death he had be saddened to learn of) and prays to Sehanine for advice.

"Oh great silver eyed goddess I, your humble servant, offer myself to your mysteries and wisdom." After long moments in prayer before the beautiful statue of the divine patron of the moon and autumn, trickery and illusions Saliq got to his feet and left to find the others.

His sorrow over losing Norion was still very sore and he resolved to find some way to honour the dwarf. He also spared some thoughts for poor Bruno, and hoped than unhappy soul had found some peace.

Re: Chapter 7: A Ghastly Discovery

The next few days saw Inas recuperating at the Temple of Melora. While he generally hated city life, he found the quiet comfort of the temple soothing to his aching body. The acolytes tended to his weakened body, and helped lead him in prayer to comfort his damaged soul. Recent events had taken a toll, but the priestess assured him that he would make a full recovery, in time. They cared well for him and his strength began to return.

To aid his recovery he spent time practicing his art, sparring with some of the temple guards and firing arrow after arrow at straw targets in the courtyard.

Eventually he left the temple for the first time. A mundane shopping expedition, but one that filled him with dread. He had never felt so weak, so helpless. His clothes and armour had been left torn and tattered beyond repair by the ordeal with the ghasts, and now he was out in the big city in donated clothing. With no cloak his scarred face was bared for all to see. He tried to look inconspicuous, but couldn’t help notice every sideways look from a passer-by, every pointed finger from a frightened child.

He headed to the market, concentrating first on clothing. His first purchase was a cloak, a simple brown affair of reasonable quality that included a cowl to cover his head. Stepping back out on the street he felt less vulnerable, less naked. With more confidence that he had felt in days he continued about the market, buying full sets of clothing including trousers, simple shirts and tunics, undergarments and socks. He also treated himself to some new calfskin boots and soft leather gloves.

Resplendent in his new clothing, complete with spares of everything, he headed to the artisan's quarter to look for new arms and armour. Finding a decent fletcher he purchased a dozen arrows to top up his quiver. He asked around and located a decent smith with a solid reputation, a Dwarf named Melchort. He tried on several sets of armour, finding some that fitted him well. Before deciding on a purchase he asked of him, "Master Melchort, this is certainly fine workmanship, your reputation is well-founded. Pray tell me, how much would a set of your finest banded mail armour set me back."

Okay, I have deducted 25gp to cover arrows and clothing. Can't be bothered to calculate the real cost but that should cover everything I have bought plus sundries over the next few days until we are recovered enough to go adventuring. Shane, please advise if you want me to deduct more.

I am asking Melchort about the costs for high quality banded armour. Shane, please advise on additional costs for each -1 to AC for better armour. Thanks.

Rath nods seriously. "Was a time it might have," Rath agrees, although of course Rath knows nobody that jail did good for. "Monvo died, Ma'am, some days ago."

He takes a deep breath. "What you got to know is, he changed, at the end. Look, Monvo wasn't no shining paladin, and he wasn't no hero. Not saying that. But he turned a bit from that crooked path, see? He stood with his friends, and he stood brave, and he fought for what's right, maybe for the first time," Rath lies. Monvo's mother receives Rath's tidings with a stony, ashen demeanor that is soon overcome with deep sadness, terminating in a glacial tear that hangs on the folds of her jowl. These words were comforting to her but could not take away the sting of a mother's disappointment of what could have been. Monvo could have had a promising career in the Watch, maybe even one day rose up through the ranks. He certainly had the physical makings. But it wasn't to be.

Speaking in a faint tremble, she replies "Thank you Son. It does my mind some peace to hear you speak kindly of my boy, that some good came of him in the end, when it mattered."

She will of course also wish to know where his remains are disposed of and will be somewhat saddened to hear his final resting place is not in Ravenskeep. It would be quite an effort, and an impractical one given her means, to visit his gravesite to say whatever need be said, but at least she knew he was seen to properly.

Not knowing what else to say she will carefully prod for any further details about how he died, but she does not make a huge effort to poke very deeply. It was probably best she just know he did well in the end.

Ben's rebuke of Avandra and affirmation of The Raven Queen does not go without the smallest of portents. The weather turns gray and overcast for several days, casting a dark pall over the dirty city as a fine, warm mist descends from the skies. It is not enough to soak through clothing, but enough to keep one damp and uncomfortable.

Also, while striding through the streets, a new perspective on his lot in life, the bottom of his boot wears through. Nothing a cobbler can't mend, but a nuisance nonetheless.

Perhaps while en route to see to his boot, Ben happens upon another curious portent: a group of armored men wearing the black and green coat of arms of Lord Myron. Between them, Ben spies a pale, thin immaculately dressed nobleman with a distinctive forked mustache and beard. The man carries himself imperiously as though he is above the dredge and muck that surrounds him. The nobleman spits out a verbal lashing at a young boy who had been loitering around a lacquered black carriage and, when the boy scampers off, the nobleman enters its plush interior.

The carriage also bears the coat of arms of Lord Myron. The drover leaves no doubt as to whom the man is, "All clear for Lord Myron!" he yells at a throng of people blocking the carriage's path.

News of the Horned One's demise has reached Stormhaven and Saliq hears several differing accountings of the particulars, each of which is more fantastical then the next. The most important detail that is not lost in the retelling is the names of the bold heroes who bested that villain. On this fact, all agree: adventurers from Stormhaven!

But the main item of interest is talk of a power play within the noble courts, to wrest control of the city from the hereditary ruling aristocracy, The Thyrandas Family. Apparently the Talas Family has amassed enough power and riches to make its case and has secured the support of The Mercenaries Guild, whose ranks are swelling from a recent campaign that brought back fresh 'recruits' from The Empires of the Shifting Sands. Swarthy men wearing The Mercenary Guild's livery, a mailed fist, are seen all over the city now and there is a palpable feeling that something big is stirring. The Stormhaven Watch also seems to be on edge as a result of these recent tidings.

Monvo shrieked. He broke and ran, fleeing the darkness and the dark-cloaked demons as they tore into Bruno and Eagle, unseen but not unheard. The noises were unwholesome, grisly. Monvo ran, sprinted, raced away, sparing a panicked glance behind ... .

Rath spared a glance himself, at Monvo running full tilt from the fray. There was a dark cloud in the sky, a sphere of abyssal darkness, and with no hesitation the cloud dived straight for Monvo. He was engulfed. Rath heard the scream, first of fear and then of agony, and he heard the wet, hacking noises from within the dark cloud. Rath tightened his grip on his trident, and turned back to his nearer foe. His heart was cold to Monvo's fate.

Rath shakes his head slowly. "Don't know, really. I didn't see it happen." He shrugs and bows a little. "Pelor shine on you, Ma'am. I'm thinking He owes you that much. A little light in the darkness."

And with that, Rath moves away, with heavy heart.

Re: Chapter 7: A Ghastly Discovery

The temples of the Raven Queen were Ben's first stop, to make formal his dedication to her cause. His sister at his side goes some distance with the priests with, as does his small donation of ten gold to their coffers.

He purchases himself whatever fetishes and symbols of the temple common folk might buy, and lights a dozen incense for those who died at the keep of the Horned-One. (Though naught for Monvo, the loud mouthed thug.)

His plan, once he purchased himself some new boots, and a new set of leather armor, was to find a trainer in the use of broad swords, and an artist to tattoo the emblem of his new goddess on his body, however the sight of Lord Myron distracted him. As the fop entered the building Ben spit into the mud while thinking dark thoughts, then he took a moment to ascertain the name of type of building the man and his entourage had entered.

he had hoped, in some vague way, that their actions outside to city walls had worked against the interests of the family Talas in general and lord Myron in particular. It did not appear to be the case... was the establishment one he could follow the lord into?

Master Melchort the Armorer is delighted to hear of Inas' interest in his best suit of armor and moves the human ranger to a well-crafted suit of polished banded mail set over a chain shirt. The mail is a bit lighter than expected and seems to fit reasonably well, but will need a few modifications to get the fit just right. Admiring the tall ranger in his mail, Melchort coos, "Now there is a set of armor fit for a dashing young warrior!"

Melchort says the banded mail can be Inas' for the price of 120 gold.

"Of course, if money is of concern, you could always opt for something fit for the rank and file, but something tells me you are a man of consequence!"

OOC: The suit is finely crafted and slightly lighter than a standard suit of banded mail, but has no bonuses to AC.

Inas tried on the armour. It was certainly lighter and well-fitting, and looked to be finely crafted. However, the price was high and presently beyond his means. He considered his options.

I only have 110gp left. Unless he is prepared to haggle or I can obtain the remaining funds from party treasure then I cannot afford this.

Questions:
- What game effects would this armour have?
- Can I order some armour that does have a better AC rating? If so, what price would that be?

OOC: The armor feels nice on Inas and is certainly beautiful to behold, but it does not have any noticeable mechanical advantages.  It is still a fine suit of banded mail though.

PCs will generally not be able to buy magic items in this campaign, except for the possibility of expendable items like scrolls or potions. Magic items can be created, upon reaching name level, per rules outlined in the DMG, but that's about it. There is always a very small chance of finding some magic item for sale somewhere within the city, but this will require extensive research, time and resources.

In general, you won't be able to buy magic items though.
