Characters and character creation (read third)

Although you have to take on one of the existing characters in the game, not everything about them is set in stone. They have their own appearances and histories, but their personalities and skills are entirely up to you.

Each character has a slightly different character creation process, so here's a quick explanation. Not all of it is meant to be clearly understood at the start of the game.
Advantage and Disadvantage: Each character has unique advantages and disadvantages as a result of their histories, most of them relating to the game world.
Team and environmental objective: Each character has at least one goal pertaining to either themselves and the other players, or the rest of the game world (the environment). The characters have no idea where these objectives come from, and acting on them would in fact be pretty crazy, right?

Guilt (free)
Advantage: Your combat ability is indirectly increased.
Disadvantage: You have been mortally wounded and will die within a day. Also, environmental penalty.
Team objective: Guilt alive, Minigun dead, others irrelevant.
Environment objective: None.
Gender: Female.

Minigun (taken)
Advantage: You have a unique source of information.
Disadvantage: Environmental penalty.
Team objective: All teammates dead.
Environment objective: All other characters dead.
Gender: Female.

Playmate (taken)
Advantage: Environmental bonus.
Disadvantage: Your environmental bonus can be reversed under certain circumstances.
Team objective: None.
Environment objective: Back the other team's final play.
Gender: Female.

error (taken)
Advantage: All environmental aspects get a spectacular bonus.
Disadvantage: Because you cheated your way into the team (hence the rigged stats), you don't have an objective to complete unless you find one later, which may in turn mess up your cheating. Reality has a tendency to warp around you, or at least your perception of it. Finally, you have a condition similar to epilepsy that can incapacitate you.
Gender: Male.

Fedora (not currently available)
Advantage: All environmental aspects get a bonus. You get some of the benefit of error's cheating without the drawbacks.
Disadvantage: You don't fully join the game immediately, but must wait for the other players to get you, which won't necessarily happen at all. error's cheating bonuses sometimes conflict with yours. In addition to the normal conditions monitored, your boredom level is also tracked and can rapidly affect your performance if not kept low.
Team objective: Fedora alive, all others irrelevant.
Environment objective: None.
Gender: Male.

Character creation rules for the background engine

For those that are interested in making their own sheets. This is not required to play the game!

Spoiler text: (Highlight or hover over the text to view)
Character creation follows a modified version of D20 Modern, using only the core rulebook. Starting level is 6. Don't take any equipment, wealth, occupation, profession, reputation, action points, or knowledge skills. Once you're in the game and you know what character you're playing, you can roll your stats as described here, then choose your class, feats, skills, etc. and determine your derived values.

Each character has a different attribute pool to roll. If 4d8 appears rather than 4d6, you sum all four rather than dropping the lowest.

Guilt: 4d8, 4d6 drop lowest (x4), 1. The 4d8 must be assigned to Str or Dex, and the 1 must be assigned to Con.
Minigun: 4d8, 4d6 drop lowest (x5)
Playmate: 4d6 drop lowest (x6), then subtract 6 points from your stats in any combination desired.
error: 4d6 drop lowest (x6), then add 6 points to each stat.
Fedora: 4d6 drop lowest (x6), then add 6 points to each stat.
