Episode 4-4: Hell or Highwater

The sun was directly overhead on the walk back to the city jail, and Wyatt Earp seemed to have just walked back over. It was a hot day outside, though there was a nice breeze that kept it bearable. Indoors, things could get a bit stifling though, and so Dodge's deputy marshal sat on the stairs outside the jailhouse smoking. He lifted up a hand in greeting as he was approached.

"Yup." Gabby says. "The survivor of Hays, Mrs. Johnson, had some interesting things to say, things that I reckon Radcliffe might be able to shed some light on. Is he up fer talkin'?"

Morgan nodded in agreement with Gabby's words. "There's a chance your prisoner has some expertise that might shed some light about what happened in Hays," he offered.

The lawman blew out a stream of smoke from his hand rolled cigarette, and put it out on the ground, stamping it out. He frowned for a moment and then sighed. "He may be up for talkin', and he may have some expertise into what you're lookin' for. Problem is, he ain't here no more. Couple folks from the United States government came and took him earlier."

Morgan's shoulders sunk. He smiled ruefully, shaking his head. "The Agency. They don't waste time."

Glancing over at Gabby, he said, "Well, Gabby. You want to take a walk around our neck of Dodge? Get familiar with where we're patrolling?"

"If the Rangers had gotten here sooner, I'da given him to them. I ain't part o' no turf war, just to be clear," he said.

"You were just doing your job, Marshal," Morgan said.

Turning to Gabby, he added, "There's a part of the U.S. government that's known as the Agency. They're very secretive and they're mainly concerned with investigating the strange things that happen out here. Things like Radcliffe's walking dead men. I don't know much about what they do, but I know in Union territory, they carry a lot of authority."

"Hmm..." Gabby murmurs, scratching his beard. "But how would thy have heard o' Radcliffe this soon..." He snaps his fingers. "Darling!" he looks at Wyatt Earp. "Was Mr. Darling here afore we all arrived?"

Re: Episode 4-4: Hell or Highwater

"The Agency and the Rangers both have a heavy presence in this town, and there's not a lot that doesn't get on their radar. They've been keepin' it pretty close to the ground though, except for when they've been shootin' each other lately. They've gotten into a bit of a violent turf war here. Still, not much gets by that they don't hear," he said.

"Maybe it's that Darling, or maybe it's somethin' else. He was here earlier. Were there other passengers on the train that came with y'all?"

"None who knew all the details of what went down." Gabby muttered. "And none who was urgin' me to keep quiet about the whole incident. Or tried so hard to get me to leave him alone with Radcliffe while we was waitin' for you. I knew there was somethin' fishy about him. I just knew it!"

The deputy seemed unconcerned. "If you say so, Mr. Clarke. I've got bigger fish to fry here in Dodge City. Well, maybe that's not exactly true. I'm just happy to let the Agency and the Rangers and whoever the hell else fry the crazy kinda fish. It's all I can do to keep regular folks from shootin' each other right now."

Morgan shook his head. "Gabby, I sent a telegram to the Agency not long after we reached Dodge. Regardless of my opinion of them, as a Marshal I'm required to report anything that's...well, supernatural to them. The truth is, they probably acted on my report. I just didn't think they'd come in and sweep up Radcliffe so fast."

"Well, it looks like we have our answer," he said, nodding to Caleb.

"You can trust that they'll get to the bottom of whatever he was up to. Whatever he knows, they'll have it outta him. He ain't gonna be keepin' any more secrets. Not that I think they'd have a tough time with it. Man seemed like a coward."

"How are things lookin' on your new turf? You find Dog Eye's alright?"

Re: Episode 4-4: Hell or Highwater

Gabby frowns, but lets it pass. Ah, well. It was out of his hands now. He still felt that maybe the Agency happened to get two telegrams, but he didn't air it. He'd certainly want to keep a closer eye on Randolph Darling, though.

He shrugged at the question. "Seemed like a nice enough place."
