Episode 9-1: Matters of Dentistry

A somewhat bewildered looking dentist opened the door clutching a rifle, but put it down when he saw that it was Sky Dog, and seeing the obviously wounded Daniel, he ushered them both inside his establishment.

"Come in, come in. In need of my services? Let me see those wounds," he said.

Daniel nodded and complied, seemingly in somewhat of a daze. He presented each of his wounds in turn. "Ain't none of 'em too bad, though. Jus' need a little cleanin' and sewin'."

"Well, it looks like someone's already done a fair job on these. I'll apply some antiseptics to them though, and give you some better bandages so they don't infect. You should keep some on you so you can change them regularly," he said, beginning to see to Daniel's hurts.

"Did you say you needed some water, Sky Dog?"

Episode 9-1: Matters of Dentistry

"The boiled water, yes - this is only for holding together the wounds, it is not washed." Sky Dog gestured at the haphazard sheet-stanching modelled by Daniel. "I am glad you believe in the man Lister, yes? It is rare in America! -but it would be well to let my friend Dalix sit, as he has a wound in his side also from fighting Quanterill's dead ones." Sky Dog pointed the injury out and then looked up.

"He is ended now, the demon."
He affirmed, helping the dentist's assessment. "How many of the bitten ones are still alive?"

"Boiled water...yes, over there," he pointed to a covered pot.

"The bitten ones...all dead I'm afraid. We tried putting salt around them, and the silver water thing. But none of it seemed to work. If you'll pardon me saying so, and Dr. Mansfield agrees with me, I think all of that might be superstitiuos nonsense. I don't know what else we might have done, though, so it was worth a try. I hauled them out and burned the bodies and cleaned my shop with sterile alcohol."

Episode 9-1: Matters of Dentistry

The shaman went a pale and cobweb colour under his smears of ash, fetching the water over. "So fast?"

Swallowing and forcing calm back to the core of himself, he went on: "It was not the silver's failure...when I went out hunting with the Americans we found one that had made the walking dead, and one that had...taken his sister and cut her heart and liver into pieces with his iron knife in her, alive."

He looked up, his voice a rasp of horror and disgust. "I think they had gnawed bones also...but usually, for a bad death, the onnir of the place takes it. There there was no spirit, only the...black air," he frowned, lacking the English to describe. "Not when there is no light, but in the shadows of the world, a different darkness. Like the ones from Out There use like light to see, yes?"

Seeing he'd lost the man, Sky Dog shook his head and tried to clarify, still white with shame. "It was a made disease. Not just the corruption but the will also, with that wickedness they had done." He sighed. "But I did not know this."

The dentist didn't understand half of what the Siberian said, but at the end clapped him on the back in a friendly way. "Don't take it too hard on yourself, son," he said.
