Re: Heat a Cold, Burn a Fever...

Inhuman knowing he needed help securing the prisoners replied " I need Vosper up top."

"Nightmare back up Oscillator finishing up the job."

The job needed to get done quick. Speaking to the Bear but knowing the telepath would understand him "Pozhaluysta, soobshchite vse vashi Personal kapitulyatsii . YA ne khotel by kogo-to , chtoby poluchit' bol'no za nedorazumeniye "

With the surrender order given , by a telepath no less, the research personnel would likely comply.

The yeti form follows the bear's example and becomes human, again. However, as Nightmare walks  to Oscillator in preparations for completing the maneuvers, he does shiver and lament the loos of fur.

Bear nods in agreement and gestures to Caress of Steel. Moments later everyone hears her voice in their minds; "This is to all scientists and personnel in the facility. Please make your way to the elevator and come topside. Do not be surprised by what you see and make sure you are wearing arctic gear. Bring all personal items with you, this is essential. You are all expected topside in 5 minutes."

Bear nods and smiles, he knows the drill. He gestures again to Caress of Steel and her voice appears again; "Just to be clear, personal items means PERSONAL items only, nothing whatsoever having to do with the research done here. No notes, samples, or anything of the sort. Only items that one would openly share with anyone around them."

Re: Heat a Cold, Burn a Fever...

OOC: Just to be clear it is not possible for everyone below to gather their personal items, put on heavy arctic gear, and make it topside by elevator in 1 minute. The elevator itself probably takes almost a minute to get to the top. Five minutes is a reasonable and fair amount of time, especially considering the rest below are non-combatants. They can't even *get* to the elevator in less than 30 seconds and that would be without gathering their personal stuff (keepsakes, medication, and such) or preparing for the cold in any way. You can always have Oscillator phase down there to supervise.

So you might want to edit your posts.

OOC: Even leaving that aside it is not physically possible for everything Inhuman is demanding to be accomplished in 1 minute. People may want to grab photos of loved ones or keepsakes that they have been given. It is the 60s remember, you can't just print out a digital image from your DSLR at will. I am not looking for a way to fuck the team, you all won fair and square. I am just looking for a little dignity for the non-combatants so they can grab what tiny bits of their personal lives they have here that helped to keep them sane in the middle of Antarctica for weeks on end. The team is free to search them and I will tell you right now they will find nothing out of the ordinary.

It took Vosper a few heartbeats to realize it was over - that they'd won.  She took a couple staggered steps and then collapsed in the snow on her hands and knees, utterly spent.  Her wounds were healing at an impossible rate, but it hurt... and she had no energy left.  Shaking, she lowered her head to gather herself.

In reply to Vosper (msg # 319):

Sunphoenix glances down at the... spot where the unconscious Shadow's Kiss 'was' and just smiles... hoping she gets home.

Crouching down next to Vosper, "You ok, sweety? You took several hits... {sighing deeply}...ok we all did, but if your ok, not going into shock... I'm gonna start generating some heat to try to keep some of us warm."

He waits for her to indicate one way or another.. not wanting her to drift off to sleep if she is going into shock.

If Vosper is just tired and clearly stable... he'll walk over to the two piles of metal Caress of Steel dropped and point his hands at the piles of metal unleashing a wash of flames not to destroy them but heat the piles to a dull cherry red glow to generate some temporary heat for the scientists and base personnel to huddle around for warmth, while Oscillator, sets his charges in the research facility.

While he works he comments, "Where's that Vodka.. I need a drink...?"

Re: Heat a Cold, Burn a Fever...

Inhuman was busy dealing with the prisoners when he saw Vosper sink down on the ice. But before he could check on her he saw Sunphoenix approach her. Even badly wounded you could count on a marine to try and make time with a pretty girl.

Looking at the two of them he was reminded of how close they had come to losing team members on this operation. But he also reminded himself they were not out of the woods yet.

"Stay sharp people." The Inhuman said to remind his team as well.

Re: Heat a Cold, Burn a Fever...

Oscillator and Nightmare set the charges throughout the facility.  Osc plans to have Muldoon verify placement before they trigger the detonator -- Osc is a trained scientist, not trained in demolitions.

It doesn't take that long -- set the charge, connect the fuse (electrical), then connect the detonator last.  Shortly they are done.

Oscillator is torn between looking at what the Russians were doing and not looking.  The scientist in him wins out, and he takes a look at the research (that's not in Russian).  While he's taking in the info, he calls to Muldoon over the walkie talkie,

"Package is in place.  I'd prefer you take a look before we deliver.  I'll send my sidekick to swap places with the BigGuy, what'd he say his name was -- Grouchy?"

He clicks off.  "I meant no offense, Nightmare.  Technically, I'd probably be your sidekick."

Oscillator's eyes haven't yet left the research paperwork and diagrams spread out on the table.  He starts to get a better sense of what research was being conducted.

Vos shook her head and sat up.  Then she coughed up and spat something into her hand before dropping it into the snow - a bloody bullet.

"Just a flesh wound," she coughed glibly.  Her outfit was riddled with bullet holes and covered in her own blood, but her wounds were slowly closing before his eyes.

"I'll take a vodka, too," she rasped.  Steam was coming off of her form in the antarctic cold.

Inhuman picked up his radio "On my way Oscy."

Inhuman waited to see Nightmare emerge and headed toward the labs. He did not much relish the idea of being in a Soviet lab again, but he knew he had far more training blowing buildings than most of the others on the team.

Inhuman headed down the elevator.

Re: Heat a Cold, Burn a Fever...

Despite his confidence with matters scientific, Osc wasn't entirely certain about placing each of the charges.  The idea of blowing an experimental facility like this -- potentially unleashing the threat they'd come to prevent -- that was enough to keep Osc's ego from asserting itself.

"I've placed the charges at approximately even spacings, tamped charges at the reinforced structures for maximum dispersion inwards.  Just need your green light before blowing this lab."

And I brought you here for another reason, Sergeant..."

Osc pauses to switch gears, "I was wondering if any of these people -- supers, scientists, guards -- if they want to come with us and seek political asylum in the USA?"

Oscillator knew the mission wasn't to liberate a bunch of Russian nationals, but he'd fought the people, they seemed formidable and worthy as any opponents they'd faced -- and now the team had a chance to offer the enemy a better life.

"What I mean is, aren't we doing all this to promote freedom, liberty, pursuit of happiness?  A better way of life?"

He left it there.  If Muldoon was on-board with the idea, Osc or Muldoon could pitch it to the team and offer asylum to the Russians.  If Muldoon wasn't on board with it, he'd drop it.

With a smile, and a nod, as Nightmare turns to leave Oscillator in the Russian base he points his right index finger into the air and says, "Heigh-oh, Sidekick! Away." and motors out to join Inhuman outside the base.
Noting the battered condition of Sunphoenix and Poco, and recognizing that the latter has taken the most damage, he approaches Poco and opines, "You look to be the most needy, let's see how your karma sits." before waving his hand in the man's general direction.

Re: Heat a Cold, Burn a Fever...

OOC: It is pretty straightforward really, the incendiary devices are set up all around the lab areas and detonated first to incinerate/sterilize everything in there, living or not. A moment after, the thermobaric devices set around the perimeter of the underground facility will be detonated and collapse the entire level upon itself. Easy-peasy.

Also, I know for sure that Sunphoenix took a CRIT potion. I am assuming Poco would be given one immediately which leaves 4 more. Vosper will be fine in short order due to her regeneration but everyone else was injured to some level and there are enough CRIT potions for the remaining 4 heroes (with Sunphoenix and Poco using the other 2).

Re: Heat a Cold, Burn a Fever...

With the aid of the CRIT potions Sunphoenix, Nightmare, and Oscillator are quickly healed while Onyx only has a few scrapes and bruises left. Vosper of course rapidly heals up as she always has. Poco and Inhuman will need more time and medical intervention to get back to their peak and everyone is exhausted to different degrees.

While Oscillator and Nightmare are down placing the charges the scientists and staff make their way up in small groups over the next few minutes. It is obvious they are non-combatants as they look fearful of the group. However when they look to Bear and he nods with a smile they appear to relax. They gather all the soldiers, one of which is just barely hanging on and begin giving medical attention. Sufficient medical supplies are found topside for both the team and the Soviets as well as what the scientists bring up. The team repairs the damage done to the wiring so the barracks and mess will have heat and power until the Soviets are rescued.

Down in the lab Nightmare and Oscillator make sure all notes and research materials are placed centrally. They take note of the quarantine area with multiple airlocks and special biosuits and see the pigs and primates within, most in varying degrees of illness. Using the biosuits they are able to place thermite charges within the quarantine area as well. After doing this they use the extensive disinfection procedure and get back to the main lab.

Bear does inform the team that it is highly likely Whisper will be getting reinforcements and returning to the facility. He estimates it could be within 30 minutes, possibly less. Fortunately Oscillator and Nightmare are able to place the charges and Inhuman's inspection shows they are right where they need to be. Making sure the Soviets (aside from Bear and Caress of Steel) are safely in the barracks the team sets off the charges in order. Initially nothing is heard or felt (although Oscillator does feel some vibrations through the group) as the thermite charges go off. Moments later however the thermobaric charges detonate with everyone feeling the effects. The entire central facility collapses downwards about 10 feet or so as the lab level is collapsed upon itself by the thermobaric charges, burying all of the incinerated research a few hundred feet below the icy ground. The two Soviet supers sigh for a moment then nod slowly, shrugging their shoulders in unison.

As the team prepares to leave Inhuman offers to any scientist, soldier, staff, or super the opportunity to come with the team to the United States. Everyone declines however, with a lot of talk about family back in the USSR and the amenities made available to them that the average citizen never has. It is somewhat obvious that a few are taking the lead from Bear and Caress of Steel but none can be swayed and all choose to remain. Bear salutes Inhuman and nods to the others on the team, leading Caress of Steel towards the barracks as the team starts to head west towards the snowmobiles.

The team gets to the snowmobiles with no issues (well aside from the cold and wind) and head back towards the rendezvous spot. Oscillator is able to sense some vibration from the east, possibly choppers from the feel of it and informs the others. The team is able to make it to the rendezvous and the choppers are apparently well-behind, probably stopping to check on the Soviets at the facility. Everyone feels Ramesses presence in their minds and the gateway opens. The team rides into the SMITE base and as the last snowmobile makes it through the gateway closes behind it. The commanding soldier at the base says that the team will be expected in the Ready Room in the morning and encourages people to stop by the infirmary as well as getting a night's sleep. He lets the team know they will be called to the Ready Room at 0800 hours.

OOC: OK here is the big wrap-up of the Antarctic mission. Everyone can feel free to post in the SMITE Base and HQ thread in the interim and I will let everyone know when to start posting in the Ready Room thread for the debriefing.

It has already been handed out but I am posting it here too: 1230 xp each from defeating the Soviets plus an additional 1000 xp for completing the mission objective.

Good job everyone and now for a bit of the old downtime, in part so the GM can figure out the next mission.
