Re: Heat a Cold, Burn a Fever...

Dressed in slow clothing and goggles, Eddy is the first through out of the gate (at a gallop) on his snowmobile.
The engine guns to full throttle, as he swings it around in some tight figure-8s, howling in fun with a volume and ferocity to match the winds.

Nightmare drives his snowmobile through the portal as sedately as a snowmobile will drive. Running the machine at idle, he waits for the rest of the team to assemble.

Re: Heat a Cold, Burn a Fever...

Oscillator drives thru on his snowmobile, then idles it next to the others.

His thoughts were not focussed on the mission.  'Why doesn't our government find us a psychic, or a precog, or at least someone who can keep us warm?'

And then he activated his vibration defense to vaporize any snow particles before they hit him, and he got warmer.  'It's not fire, but it will have to be good enough until we are situated.

Wonder if Vosper can heat things uo by rubbing sticks together, or charcoals...?'

Onyx glows as he uses his internal energies to help hold the cold at bay.

He sets about helping with the emergency shelters.

"Any of you boy scouts good with maps? I have a feeling these tents are going to be under snow by the time we head back here."

"I worked Recon for M-I6 before I met you lot," Vosper offered.  "I can read a map.  But with no bearings, it'll be hard.  Someday we'll have to invent something that gives accurate positions on a map via satellite, or something."

"We shouldn't need to bother his Egyptian-ness... Onyx, you've got magnetism in your bag of tricks, right?  We just need to have a good hunk of metal to mark the spot, and you should be able to find it with your powers."

Re: Heat a Cold, Burn a Fever...

Coming through the gate Muldoon looked at his copy of the map and attempted to gain his bearings. This far north it was difficult to relay on a compass, so the green beret did his best to find some distinctive terrain.

While in captivity with the Soviets he had spent time in Sibera, it was an cold place. But this was different, this was a frigid wasteland.

"Two things to remember," Vos shouted to the team.  "This isn't just the COLDEST place on Earth... it's the DRIEST.  Dehydration can be a real concern, so stay hydrated.  And when the temperature drops, I'd not advise breathing without a muffler, filter or mask... air'll get so cold it'll freeze your lungs solid."

"Visibility can drop to almost zero.  We've got ways to compensate for that, but one of the best is to remain in sight of others at all times,"
she added.

"Yes, cold and dry. The top of the world like the top of the tallest mountain. Interesting. Sometimes the symmetry between what was and what will be becomes so marked the future follows the footsteps of the past without volition."
"That's a digression. Avoid them, and focus on the task at hand."

His teeth may be chattering, slightly, but all concerned are uncertain whether he's feeling the first euphoric effects of hypothermia or just being himself.

OOC: Fortunately for the team, it is not winter in Antarctica but fall so it is not as cold as it could be. The wind currently is pretty uncomfortable however.

Re: Heat a Cold, Burn a Fever...

Eddy pulled up next to the team, creating a 'splash' of snow.
Under the furry hood, and face mask, his furry face could be seen grinning ear to ear.

pulling the face mask aside for a moment (and not having heard a single thing said before now, he called out, "WHO WANTS TO RACE TO THE TOP OF THAT HILL OVER THERE?"

Eddy, of course, was an 18 year old from one of the hottest countries around.  He'd never seen snow before; but had heard, and dreamed, all about it.  And damn if he wasn't enjoying his first experience with it.

"You don't even notice the cold, do you?" Oscillator asked.

He pulled his parka up, and prepared to race -- but he waited to make sure the others were joining.  Osc didn't want to cause a ruckus.

Again pulling his parka close about him, Nightmare maneuvers the snowmobile to point in the direction they are to be going. He is prepared to move out, and has but one thing to say, "kids... they'll be the death of us all."

Re: Heat a Cold, Burn a Fever...

Eventually the team works together to put up the shelters. With the gusting wind it is tricky but the task is eventually completed. Even though it is mid-Fall the temperature is quite cold, around -50 F, with the windchills making it even worse. The team is happy for the advanced cold weather gear but still feel enough of the cold to know that long periods of time exposed will eventually take their toll. Despite the snow and ice around, as Vosper said it is quite dry.

The shelters now up the team can at least get away from the wind while they check the map and compass, which seems to work perfectly fine. Onyx of course is being careful not to have his magnetic power active in the vicinity. The bearings appear to be correct and from what was said the research facility should be about 4-5 miles away. What the team needs to decide is whether to advance on the facility during the day when it is not as cold or wait until they have dark as an additional block to being seen.

Onyx ignores the hi-jinks of some of this companions and listens carefully to Vosper. The warning about frozen lungs visibly upsets him.

"This is similar to the himalayas, and from what I've seen the temperature will drop too low to function in when it becomes dark. We should move out as soon as possible."
Inside the shelter, Nightmare is extremely subdued, apparently bothered by something in the air.

Re: Heat a Cold, Burn a Fever...

The needle on the compass dances and spins toward Onyx as a ripple of magnetic energy plays over his body and causes any loose metal in the tent to dance momentarily.

He heads toward the tent entrance.

"No time to waste flappin' gums then."

He steps through the entrance and raises a few feet above the snow, flying slowly in the direction of base, waiting to pick up speed until the others follow.

Re: Heat a Cold, Burn a Fever...

With Onyx leading the way hovering in the air the rest of the team follows in the direction of the facility. His directional skills prove up to the task even in the snow blowing around in the winds and in about an hour's time the team has crested another hill and can just see the facility about 500 feet in the distance. The winds are still gusting at times but settle enough between gusts to get some details. There is a large central building, definitely permanent-looking while scattered around it are a number of other structures; garages, a large antenna, a barracks, and three towers around the facility evenly spaced. No vehicles are in view but they are likely in the garages to protect them from the cold. At this point the team cannot see anyone moving about. The snowmobiles can be left here safely hidden with the charges (assuming the team does not want to carry them into a potential combat situation).

OOC: Anyone who is using an active power like Flight with an hourly cost please mark off 2 hours of use (the 2nd hour is newly-started). Also no power can be recovered while the power remains active.
