Re: Encounter On Alzenei
In reply to Ken Jenkins (msg # 96):
The "uniform" sergeant had a badge with number. And a uniform, marked aircar, etc. The other police were deferring to him. Obviously, this wasn't some kind of ruse. Police just didn't like anyone riding in the front seat other than police!
Once at the main police station downtown, Ken repeated his story. The detectives listened with interest, taking notes. Kalamanaru's name didn't elicit much response at first; these were not customs agents and his criminal record was clean of any wants, warrants or even charges. After some quick research on the planetary compu-net, it was obvious Kalamanaru was a respected wealthy businessman in the interstellar shipping industry, which Ken already knew but the detectives did not.
The senior detective, Detective Kashi, leaned back in her chair and sized Ken up. "Listen, Mr. Jenkins. Ken? It's not that we don't believe you, but these are serious accusations about Mr. Kalamanaru. It's clear he's an important person and he's not suspected of any wrongdoing here on Alzenei. What's the motive? What's the connection to tonight's attack on you? For all we know, this could have something to do with smugglers, and Miss Messandi could have wanted to go to police, or was somehow involved."
It was clear she wasn't ruling Ken out as a suspect or otherwise being involved. This made a certain amount of sense; Kalamanaru was highly respected if not untouchable, whereas Ken was an offworlder who had some kind of personal relationship with Lorain, and who'd been involved with her in recently recovering a large cache of Sky Raider artefacts for the Institute. But she put that aside for the moment.
"Can you ID Miss Messandi's assailants? Here, have a look at the footage."
One of them seemed familiar. He was sure it was a henchman of Kalamaru's right-hand man, Bren Pylory. But he did not know this man's actual name.
