Re: OOC: Off-Topic Posts II
In reply to Dr. Talia McKenzie (msg # 902):
My next post will provide some context to allow for posting.
The immediate goal of the current thread has been achieved: the tunnels used by the raiders to attack Shukhunaar's village has been sealed off.
Overall, we are playing through Fate of the Sky Raiders. The Sky Raiders' ancient home has been discovered but it is not a planet, it is a vast asteroid starship. It is disabled and has been floating through the void between the worlds of Far Frontiers sector for five thousand years. All this while the Fifth Frontier War rages two sectors to trailing in the Spinward Marches.
A scientific expedition from the Institute of Interstellar Studies on Alzenar in the League of Suns embarked on the hired research cruiser Inquisitor. Using information gained in the previous adventures (Legend of the Sky Raiders and Trail of the Sky Raiders) they intercepted the ancestral home/mothership as it floated through deep space. (It's still moving and within the decade will enter space claimed by the Zhodani Consulate but that's beyond the scope of our adventure.) But what appeared to be pirates infiltrated and hijacked the Inquisitor, stranding the expedition on the surface of the mothership. Later escapees from the Inquisitor confirmed this was no mutiny but a takeover by a wealthy billionaire/private art collector/criminal with no scruples about breaking the law: Eneri Kalamanaru. The mutineers took the ship back to presumably RV with Kalamanaru and a mercenary force to reveal the location of the Sky Raider mothership. Then presumably they will return to occupy it (or parts of it) in force and begin looting it of its many treasures. The expedition figures it has about 2-4 weeks before that happens.
In the mean time, the expedition entered the asteroid, traveled down a massive transit shaft (one of many that span the length and width of the asteroid) and entered an agriculture module. There they contacted descendants of the Sky Raiders still surviving in the ship: Skukhunaar's people. They are a breakaway sect from one of the two main factions, a theocracy that worships their ancestors (the Sky Raiders). The other large faction is brutal and warlike. The expedition has located a factory module that, once repaired, could provide spare parts to repair a ship or at least non-functional modules.
Angus' story is worth telling as well. Unlike Talia, he was not part of the expedition. Instead, he was on a Seeker mining ship with a partner when a Zhodani task force Jumped into the system they were at and attempted to board them. They misjumped into deep space and as a hail-Mary tried to transit via sublight speed to the nearest system while they slept in low berths. They apparently never made it as Angus woke up alone in Shukhunaar's village in the Ag module with no idea how he got there from (presumably) a docking bay somewhere on the surface. When the expedition found his low berth being used as an altar (in the "Temple of the Sleeping Man") and woke him they found he'd been in stasis for 20 years. The war he'd fled was the Fourth Frontier War, not the current Fifth! Shukhunaar's tribe in their wanderings to find a home after splitting from the theocracy had found the docking bay, and him inside his ship, and then brought him with them until they finally settled the Ag module some ten years ago.
The expedition founded a base camp in some control and quarters decks "below" the surface of the ag module (which looks like a huge hollow 12-sided die with the inner surfaces covered with lush vegetation and an artificial "sun" in the middle). The leader, Lorain Messandi, has called a staff meeting.
