Interlude - The Funeral of Baron Bluestone

For once the bustling seaport of Kallamehr lies quiet, the constant squawk of her bazaars and squares absent. The citizens of the city move as in a daze, seemingly robbed of their wits by the sudden death of their Baron - and the dark treachery that caused it. By their hundreds they gather in the streets in their mourning garb, young and old alike to watch the funeral procession of their ruler. To watch and weep.

The procession itself is a wonder to behold to the adventurers. In front of the funeral carriage march the familiar turbaned city guardsmen with Captain Jafar at their head. Their sashes and turbans are black now, dyed in mourning. With them to come other soldiers, dressed and armoured very differently. These men were clad in scale mail and their helms were wrapped around in blood red turbans. They looked strong and tough, a breed apart from the guardsmen. The scimitars they carried were weapons of war, not of ceremony and as they passed in grim order awed whispers broke out amongst the crowd: the Redhelms...

The City Council walked on foot, merchant princes and great aristocrats. The priests and priestesses of the city followed in their wake, their colourful robes marking their divine patron. Pride of place amongst them was a grizzled looking northener in golden chainmail, who looked more tavern brawler than prelate despite his order but who seemingly was Osric Drakesblade. Priest of Telak and the Baron's personal chaplain.

Finally there trailed a slight figure, little more than a boy clad in the black of mourning. Few other than Lady Carolina knew this to be Dappa, apprentice of Hammet the Dash.

Leaving the city by the Mehr Gate, the eastern most gate the procession walked to a shallow cove and the ship of northern design that lay waiting. Two centuries in the South the House of Rangor might be but they still burried their dead in Northern barbarian fashion. Today Lady Carolina would oversee such a funeral.

OOC: This is mostly an interlude scene but you may post reactions if you want.

All of you are considered to have had your wounds healed, either now or by the time the next scene starts. Mannath's skin condition has also being dealt with via the care of the court physcians.

Every gains 2 LUCK points for surviving the Tower and rescuing Lady Carolina. This cannot take you above your starting LUCK score - any excess is wasted.

Vithrain is in sombre awe. He watches the procession from a prized position - slightly elevated so that he can see every little detail. His mind is working overtime in order to memorize as much detail as possible. He'd gotten there early to get this position and had been frowned at by the locals because of it.

Where his brother was he knew not, but the lad could look after himself, as could his other companions.

Re: Interlude - The Funeral of Baron Bluestone

Having found out that the Baron would be sent to the afterlife in the traditional Barbarian way he had gone earlier to Lady Carolina and asked permission to be part of the fire starters for the funeral.

Now he stood in the cove with his bow by his side and arrow soaked in oil in his hand. As the gathering came into view he stepped forward slightly and upon seeing the Lady he bowed his head.

Then he noticed the young boy and although he did not know him he could see the distress he was in. He caught the lad's eye and gave him a warm smile to reassure him that everything would be alright.

He then pulled back his hood to reveal his newly acquired  white hair and stepped back into line with the other archers

Mannath stood quietly as the cortège moved passed him. Absently he scratched at the bite scar, and looked around nervously. He was far out of his comfort zone, and was keen to get away.

A few years ago a crowd like this would have been rich pickings for a cutpurse like him, but he had mostly reformed in recent times. As he stood he surveyed the crowd, watching the characters as they moved along the procession. Somehow he had been roped into some kind of mission to find this lunatic, and he wasn't looking forward to it. Still, there was a chance of a decent reward, and he was never one to turn down gold.

Lady Carolina warmly granted permission and had a wonderful dress taylor made on the fly, with the Ragnar coat of arms embroidered: a crowned sea dragon, plus, in a side band, a bloodied knife blade up, that for the occasion has been added in all flags and decorations, as a reminder of the vengeance duties.

Lady Carolina, dressed in black and black veiled, without a single word, takes from a pocket in her dress the bloodied knife, lifts it so that everybody can see it and then cerimoniously puts it in with the Baron.
Then, at the end of the ceremony, she takes a step back and signals Elstarir and the other archers to proceed with their part of the ceremony.

Elstarir takes a breath and draws his bow string back. Bending forward he tips the arrow head into the burning torch. Straightening he waits for the others before letting the arrow loose.

With the others it sails towards the boat and quickly the flames take hold. With one final nod Elstarir lowers his bow and says a silent prayer to the forest spirits to protect the baron on his next voyage

Re: Interlude - The Funeral of Baron Bluestone

The huge Priest of Telak chants out a prayer to the patron god of warriors and the Rangor line. His booming, Northern accented words roll along the deceptively sheltered cove like the echo of distant battle. After a long moment he turns to Lady Carolina and bows. Then he turns to the assembled great and good and speaks aloud three words:

"He has lived!"

There is silence amongst the crowd as the echoes die away. Then there is a cry from someone, a voice crying out in awe. "Look above the ship!"

Far, far above the longboat, flames already climbing its mast something is flying in the couldless sky. A sea eagle, the sun bathing it's gold and white wings in gold circles in the sky. It flies twice around the longboat before tilting it's wings and flying off. Flying north.

Beside her Lady Carolina can hear the intake of breath Osric Drakesblade makes at the sight, then his murmured prayer: "Go with Telak my lord, go to your rightful rest."

THe funeral is over.

Re: Interlude - The Funeral of Baron Bluestone

Once the procession had passed and the boat lit and sent on its way, Vithrain, who had seen his brother amongst the archers, climbed carefully down to the ground and made his way back to the inn.

No doubt a message would be forthcoming to attend upon the Baroness.
In the mean time he had a map of the town to pour over. It was a very basic sketch that he had bought from a local store but it was better than nothing.
