[Main] [Archive] Bespin - Tython Crew
There is no emotion, there is peace.
There is no ignorance, there is knowledge.
There is no passion, there is serenity.
There is no chaos, there is harmony.
There is no death, there is the Force.

Bold words. Every Jedi in the history of the Order, ever since the Mantra was first conceived and then refined by the great Odan-Urr, has questioned the meaning of them. There is emotion, there is ignorance, there is passion, there is chaos, and there is death. No one questions that these things exist in some fashion or another in the galaxy.

Why, then, do the Jedi insist on reciting and meditating upon this mantra?

The uninformed may call it idealism. The barely informed may say that it's some sort of pure state that the Jedi intend to achieve.

The truth, though, is that the mantra is ultimately right emotion, ignorance, passion, chaos, and death exist, certainly, but to the Force they are merely figments, illusions that have no more reality than a dream. The goal of the Jedi is not so much to attain a perfected state, but to regain it, to return to the source energy and become one and whole.

It's just so damned difficult.

Tanith's meditations fall apart, as they often do these days. Her thoughts are clouded, her peace hounded by the terrible twin beasts of responsibility and inevitability. Her father's voice hasn't contacted her in some time, though she can still feel his presence with her when she clears her mind, and she knows he's watching her. Still, shaking the sense of the future is difficult, and it's a poignant reminder that she still hasn't passed the final Jedi Trial.

Her vessel, the Tython, is looking a great deal better after its brief stay in the dockyards of Yag'dhul. The minor radiation leaks they ignored have been patched, the bulkhead scarring removed, and, most importantly, the hyperdrive and engines had a full overhaul, restoring them to their original strength. Regrettably, the three damaged laser cannons have not been replaced, but a few mercenary runs should smooth that over right quick.

When she swings down from her meditation space over the hold, she finds Aren, Sameera, and Lan practicing their balance. Aren has taken the role of informal teacher because he's simply the best at it, though Sameera does most of the actual instruction while Aren demonstrates by example. Lan, for his part, still hasn't quite gotten the hang of it, and he wobbles even with a relatively wide beam close to the floor.

Sameera, with her dark hair braided down her back, stands on one foot with the other crossed. She's come a long way since being taken from her backwards world. Even if she's still not familiar with most of modern technology, she's gained a great deal of confidence, and she smiles encouragingly at Lan.
"Just relax, you're concentrating too much on keeping your balance. It's more like letting go than trying to stay upright."

"You know, that is literally contradictory," Lan grumbled as he wobbled back-and-forth.

Re: [Main] The Furnace - Tython
Tanith hangs for a moment before dropping to the floor, landing in a crouch, palms splayed on the ground.

"That sounds extremely familiar," she says, deadpan, before standing up and stretching herself out.

"Sameera's said it to me, I remember saying almost exactly that to dad more than once, and I'm sure he said it to his master who in turn said it to his master and so on.  You're part of a long and storied tradition!"

Re: [Main] The Furnace - Tython
Lan's face creased into a frown. All of thirteen he, like a lot of the other young people on this ship, gives the impression of being older than his years. The consequences of having to grow up far too quickly in these dark times.

Precisely what makes these times so dark, really? Is it how the Empire dismantled the social safety net, crippled consumer protection, slashed restrictions on corporate corruption and abuse, and other signs of the rising fascist regime? All that's pretty bad by itself, but it often seems to Tanith that there's just a sense of something fundamentally wrong with the Galaxy. It's not like the Emperor's evil is influencing people's attitudes like some sort of intergalactic infection... is it?

"I'm not entirely sure how this relates to me being able to do hyperspace calculations in my head," he says by way of changing the subject.

Re: [Main] The Furnace - Tython
They're dark because the Emperor seems to want them that way.  While she could make any number of uncharitable guesses as to his reasons, the simple fact is that she isn't in any position to understand his mindset, even if she had actual data points - like a bit more insight into the dark side in general.

Maybe influencing people's attitudes -is- the point.  Who knows?

"They're almost exactly the same thing, actually.  What are you thinking about when you try to balance?"

"Like I'm trying to hold onto something," he says, "you know, to steady myself. Sometimes it's like I can just reach it, but it's always slipping away whenever I need it the most."

"Now this is where my other students - and you, if you've been paying attention - are expecting me to give you a lecture about how you shouldn't be reaching for it do much as letting it come to you," Tanith says brightly, sitting down on one of the balance beams, "in fact if Aren can't rattle it off from memory I'd be pretty damn surprised.  So let me instead ask you something else."

"You said 'when you need it the most'," she waves a hand, "Explain."

Sameera beams. "And he has rattled them off, too."

Aren grunts an acknowledgement. His vocal communication skills have improved about as quickly as Sameera's technical skills - glacial and with a lot of bumps.

For his part, Lan frowns. "I'm not sure," he admits, "it's just what came to mind." Having been in this program for a while now, he gives it further consideration. "Whenever I get close to the point where I feel like I can trust it, it just... goes away. Like I'm putting my foot over water, expecting it to hold, and then my foot just goes through and I feel like an idiot."

Tanith flashes Aren a quick grin, before turning her attention back to Lan.

It sill surprises her someone's how confortable she's starting to get in this role.  It doesn't seem to fit her at all - even now, when she thinks about it - but it holds an odd sort of affinity for her either way.

"Let me explain Aren's lecture from a different angle."

In a smooth motion she leans to her left, plants both hands on the beam and half-cartwheels into a handstand, feet pointin into the air.  She holds it for a moment, then wobbles, overbalances, and falls to the mat with a solid thud.

She stays there for a moment while her students process what just happened, then sits up.

"What do you take from that?"

"Were you doing that with or without the Force?" Lan asks. "I'm not sure how to tell yet."

"It's not always easy to," Sameera says, "especially not with internal applications."

"It looks like you just let yourself fall, he says.

"That's exactly what I did," Tanith agrees, waving a hand airily, "So, your turn.  Get up there and let yourself stack it.  Five times, go."

She crosses her legs under her on the mat, looking up at Lan expectantly.

He looks between Tanith and the balance beam, frowning.

"Is she serious?"

"Despite her tone, I'm pretty sure she's always serious," Sameera says.

Aren grunts in acknowledgement. Again. "She usually has a point to her requests," he adds. "Even if it isn't obvious at first."

Lan sighs, going up to the beam.
Roll 3d6 (Result 7)

Walking up it, he actually manages to pull off a handstand on his first try. He doesn't hold it for very long, but he does pull it off. Eventually, his arms tire and drop him, and he does it again. Then again. It takes more tries each time, as he can't replicate his first great move consistently.

"So," Tanith says once Lan has finished, in a casual tone that Sameera and Aren will recognize instantly, "Are you feeling like an idiot?"
